Do you want to learn how to throw a lead hook? On this video, Tony shares the 4 ways or variations to throw a lead hook. The lead hook is one of the most devastating punches in boxing. However, it can feel very awkward when learning it, especially for beginners. I have even seen some so-called boxing coaches on the web throwing the lead hook all wrong. For this reason, I have put together this video to explain and demonstrate the 4 perfect ways to throw a lead hook.
Check these boxing-related videos:

My name is Tony Jeffries, Olympic medalist and retired professional boxer. I am now co-owner of Box 'N Burn, two boxing fitness gyms in Los Angeles, as well as the Box 'N Burn Academy where we train professional boxing trainers. During my career I won the national championship 7 times, and also became European champion. These are the 4 ways you can throw a lead hook.
To throw the perfect lead hook, the first thing you need to keep in mind is your starting position. The wrong position won't allow you to get as much power behind the lead hook. If you are orthodox, you will use your left hand, southpaws, on the other hand, will use their right hand. I am orthodox, so I will use my left hand to throw the lead hook.
For more vids like this Subscribe - click this link
/ @tony_jeffries
First, I am going to get into position. To do that, I am going to throw a punch with my right hand. This puts the weight on my front foot, and that's the perfect position to throw a lead hook with maximum power. You can also slip while moving your weight to your front foot to get into position for a powerful lead hook. Anything you throw with your backhand will get you into the right position.
The lead hook also has its variations. In this video, I am going to demonstrate lead hook variations such as the mid-range hook. I will also cover the short-range hook, the long-range hook, and the lead hook to the body.
The lead hook to the body is by far my favourite punch in boxing. It has helped me win a lot of fights as a professional boxer. I was able to really master this punch but as you may probably guess it didn't quite happen overnight. It took a lot of hours of practice, but with strong determination, I was able to prevail.
Remember that the lead hook can be hard and awkward at first but once you have mastered it is the most powerful punch.
Regardless of whether you are boxing for fitness or fighting, mastering the lead hook will help you achieve your goals.
What you need to keep in mind is that transferring your weight is what will give you maximum power.

I'm a beginner at boxing coming from a karate background (taekwondo) and now moving into kickboxing with my trainer, I've done about 3 months of boxing training. I've watched a ton of videos but watching your instruction on the hook and the mechanics is by far the most clear & informative demonstration of how to do it. I really appreciate that your giving away you top moves. Good stuff !

As a left hander fighting from a traditional stance, I always relied on my left hooks. I was always able to generate much power inside with it. However, the flat footed hook to the body with the weight shifted hook to the head is a move I wished I had years ago. That rib tap will drop your opponents hands every time, and followed with a powerful hook to the head can be a devastating move. Good stuff.

Hey Tony, even if it’s been said numerous times: thanks for all your videos. You really teach the sweet science of boxing, mindset included, and that’s awesome! I have a question on the lead hook and the knee rotation. If you look at some boxers, like Canelo, their lead leg is solidly fixed on the ground while they throw their lead hook. Is it just a preference there, or do you loose power while rotation the knee?
@Tony_Jeffries
@Tony_Jeffries 3 жыл бұрын
Thank u Alex, means a lot - rotate hip and foot mate not knee :) but your knee will move
@calchuchesta3196
@calchuchesta3196 Жыл бұрын
@@Tony_Jeffries Conversely, I’ve seen it said that rotating solely on the back foot and keeping the left foot still, as opposed to pivoting it, gets a little more speed and power on that lead hook. Is that true?

I couldn't throw a left hook from age 17 to 29 because I had torn off a tendon in my shoulder and it would dislocate , so I had to spar with it taped up if I wanted to stand in traditional stance. Well didn't take long for guys to figure out i had no left hook ! Don't recommend it. But it did force me to get good at switching leads , Got it fixed and spent few years learning to trust it and how to throw them and was surprised how many different ways people threw them and why. Great series, glad i found it . Learning new things even though I'm 57
