I have never actually seen this kind of fierce infestations as 2020-2021 and have worked with same tried and true trees and plants, flowers throughout my 60yrs!! I have never used pesticides because of my animals, children in home. I have used plant optimal health and hand/hose worked pest control in my gardens for pests. I desperately need your advice and so subscribed after watching this video 5yrs later!!! So wish me luck!! Sincerely Lisa

+Osiris 12 .....read up on the history of neem oil. It started in India when the locusts would come and eat everything but the neem tree. So it was found that bugs don't like it (also good for scabies and fleas...few drops in a bath). So neem keeps pests away, and soap helps disperse for spraying

I’m glad I stumbled upon this video- this is a terrific demonstration on how to test how much soap to use! By repeating the experiment and using the Castile soap made by “Dr B” that is usually highly recommended on some channels it shows that the neem oil clumps to the soap and forms a thick sludge that floats to the top. Other soaps actually disperse the oil- this is probably why my neem sprays have not had too much success. The DR B soap contains a lot of oils in it too so that might be the problem so it is ineffective in being a dispersant for the neem oil - this is a great channel I’ve learned so much here! Thanks

Pure cold-pressed neem is a component of my sprays. I tend to mix 1 tbs neem to 3/4 tbs Dawn. 1 tsp isn't quite enough to emulsify the neem in my testing. I mix in plastic cup first then add to sprayer. But the premise is exactly right. Just the bare amount to emulsify the oil so it can be sprayed uniformly. Great job Gary informing us. Brent

Did you ever hear or think about putting a drop or 2 of oil of oregano to your spray? I've always wondered if it would help in any way, as it has a lot of anti bacterial/fungal/viral properties so I always wondered if it could help. I've taken 1-2 pills whenever I feel like I'm getting sick, and even add 2 drops to the water for my chickens and they never have been sick since I started. They say for "preppers" all you need is 1 drop in a gallon of water, let it sit a bit and that anti microbial Properties will be infused into the water. I realize this spray is for pests, but if you can add a drop to the water and get even a minor benefit, I think it would be worth it. Just a thought

Interesting. As a former Konditor I have learned that you can mix water with oil in baking by adding lecithin. For this reason you add eggs, that is the egg yolk. The same goes for the tempera painters of old, who have mixed their painting powders with a little water and linseed oil but also needed a binding agent, so they too used egg yolk. Now my question is: can one use egg yolk to the mix to keep it even more natural rather than soap? (using my hubby's Google account here..) Rita

A neem oil recipe I've often seen and currently use is 2 tbsp Dr. Bronner's Sal Suds to 2 tbsp neem oil per gallon of water. It seems to work, and I don't think I've ever damaged plants using it. That said, I never realized the soap was there to suspend the oil in the water! I always assumed its purpose was to help the oil to stick to plant leaves. Thanks for the info! One question, though. I use a baking soda mix as well to combat blight and other fungal diseases. I've read that combining neem oil and baking soda might render the neem oil inert. Any truth to this? I ask because If not, it would be more convenient to just add baking soda to the neem oil mix for a single application.
@THERUSTEDGARDEN8 жыл бұрын
+Kevin Miller Dr. B usually has Castile soaps. I dont how the baking soda affects the neem oil. The insect component in Neem is the azadirachtin. I dont see how that would be effected.
@cmstrauss5146 жыл бұрын
This is very helpful! I follow these recipes but the soap never looks fully dispersed, based on this demo. I’m also using the Castile soap. Now it makes sense. Question, how long does a batch last? I have read repeatedly that neem oil is good only eight hours after mixing? This is not even enough time to do a test run. Also seems like such a waste, especially for me who would really only need about 16 ounces at a time, and that’s probably too much. I appreciate your input!

Any oil works for smothering oil sprays. Just test spray as you use new oils on a few leaves and wait 48 hours. You check for damage. However, Neem Oil that is could pressed and has azadarichtin in it.. is the only one that kills chewing insects. They eat it and die in a few days. All oils smoother soft body insects but smoother doesn't work for beetles and worms/caterpillars.

I ve not been too impressed with neem oil plus it is way too expensive. Bought 2 small bottles of it at Home Depot and saw very little effect on aphids. @THERUSTEDGARDEN6 жыл бұрын
If your just wanting it for a smothering oil, any oil is fine. For neem it is really about making sure it is 100% cold pressed and has the azadirachtin in it. This stops chewing insects. If the neem oil you bought says Hydrophobic Extract.... it isn't any better than corn oil. That means they removed the key components.

I just bought some Neem Oil from you the other day and this answered my questions about using soap! Do you use soaps or other types of surfactants when using liquid seaweed or other water soluble fertilizers?
@KittenBowl18 жыл бұрын
If it's water soluble fertilizer, you don't need to use soap. You're using soap as an emulsifier to mix oil and water so that you can spray the neem oil evenly to the plant, also to prevent sprayer to get clogged up. If you get the fertilizer that says water soluble, it's already formulated to so that you can just add water, so you don't need to add soap or emulsifier. You also don't need to add soap if your neem oil already is emulsified. You need to follow the direction of whatever you're using.

Is it safe to spray the neem oil-cstaille soap on leafy vegetables? Won't we end up eating the soap?
@THERUSTEDGARDEN7 жыл бұрын
You might. But rain and washing works. I tend to harvest and then spray.

Any suggestions for another cheaper oil with same results as "Neem Oil", not very affordable for our fixed- income"! We live in zone 9a!

None. Only neem has the Azadirachtin in it.

Hi Gary! I'm loving your videos and all this great info. I do have powdery mildew on my yellow crookneck. I've been spraying with Neem oil that I bought at the ACE Garden Center. It says it's for fungus and insects/bugs.This is what I"m using: store.doyourownpestcontrol.com/bonide-neem-oil-spray?gclid=Cj0KCQjwtJzLBRC7ARIsAGMkOAnJIowoLb1XJlTEkZKAfMKZwY0MW9jlP2vPGiUIF82XlXfSkVVf3ggaAsrQEALw_wcB Do I still need to do the soap? It seems to be keeping insects at bay. Noen so far as I can see. I'm spraying weekly. The leaves that had the mildew still look like they have it, but it hasn't seemed to spread to other places. And all of my 9 tomato plants are holding steady, no blight or anything else that I can see, knock on wood! Should I also do bi weekly sprays of the aspirin as well as the baking soda formula for prevention on all my veggies/ (right now it's tomatoes, eggplant and the summer squash, but I plan on starting my greens this week).? Will I still need to do other prevention, such as the Seven, Serenade, etc? I'm in the Bay Area, 9a Zone Thank you again for all your excellent videos and advice. It's making my journey much more organized for my busy brain!! Enjoy your summer of growing, picking, eating!! DebbyK :)

I used 1 tsp of Castill soap and 1 tsb of 100% neem oil in a gallon of water. Do you know how long this solution can stay once mixed? I would hate to discard what is not used.
@THERUSTEDGARDEN8 жыл бұрын
I keep mine about 1 week. I actually dont know the full shelf life once mixed.

+Osiris 12 OIl sprays can be used for fungus, small mites or insects. Depends on the oil. The soap is always a dispersing agent.

How often should I spray with this to my citrus plants?

Check out his other vids, he's got a huge collection of stuff to see but I think once every two weeks does the trick. If you overdo it you can hurt the plant

Thanks Gary! The neem oil I bought from you just came in the mail over the weekend so this is a timely video. Regarding doing a test spray on a few leaves...do you still mix up a whole gallon for the test or a smaller amount? If you do a whole gallon will it keep the whole 48 hours until you've confirmed that the test spray was safe?
@THERUSTEDGARDEN8 жыл бұрын
Yep it will keep for 2 days. I try an use mine within 1 week.

+3v388 Which brand. Some are hydrophobic extracts and they remove the azadirachtin. A dispersing agent might already be in it.

Hi Gary, in this video you speaks of one teaspoon to a gallon and in your recipe you stated one tablespoon to a gallon. Can you help to clarify. Thanks,
@THERUSTEDGARDEN8 жыл бұрын
Yeah brain cramp. 1 tablespoon of Neem per gallon. Enough soap to break up the oil so it disperses
