The Reasons I Still Play A 20+ Year Old Game Every Single Day...
In today's video I wanted to talk to you guys and girl about the reasons as to why PSO Blue Burst still has me in a chokehold to this very day. These reason are my opinions only but I really do feel they are what help PSO excel in the space it has lived in for so many years.

I didn't have a Dreamcast, so my first exposure to PSO was the Gamecube version, and my and my friends would meet up for couch co-op every week. That was a long time ago, and I sadly don't own any edition of the game anymore, but I still love it. If I can find a good modern way to play it, I will!

If you have a PC I highly recommend the private server Ephinea which is still thriving with players to this day for PSO Blue Burst ☺️

All the games I play are 20+ years old Diablo 2, Starcraft, Ultima Online, Quake 2. New games just cannot hold my attention for more than a week.

I’m so glad I’m not the only one. Without sounding old before my time… modern day games just have very little soul or passion these days.

@@specter0023 I understand the sentiment, but it isn't all that bad. True, triple A gaming went down the drain since then, but there are still games that provide the same experience as the ones we've played many years ago. Granted you'd have to curate your selection more carefully before committing to a purchase, but I personally would not discount a game just because it doesn't cater to a specific tinge of our nostalgia. Some of the best game experiences I've had this past decade was by trying out something I never would have thought to enjoy before.

It's good to have a comfort game. I'm playing Morrowind now and I love it! No loot boxes, DLCs, microtransactions, battle pass, season pass, DRM and mandatory online connectivity. Thanks for sharing your story!

Thanks for your comment! Morrowind is legendary! Home of some of the most random and jank moment in any rpg but hell of a game!

IMO what makes PSO tick is that loop but what puts it above other games is the level design and enemy behaviors (which I consider part of level design). As you play you are constantly trying to maximize damage and minimize damage to yourself which means an understanding of the enemy behaviors and how they interact in groups. Cmode is where you can see the design come into full bloom… ah I could go on but it’s late, I’ll finish with PSO is a level design tour de force. Kudos to that team.

You have a new subscriber! I love all things PSO and LBP. I am here for the long run, if you ever want to play, if I can get infinity up and running again, let me know. I had my character wiped on one of the servers at level 106. :(

haha the pso soundtrack is way more interesting on a technical level. The audio for most episode 1 stages is dynamic and changes depending on your situation. Friend of mine really went digging into it years ago when we were learning to mod the game. It's how I was able to add the custom music for my winter forest and frozen mines mods..... 15 years ago(jesus). Game has a very fun and relaxing gameplay loop thouigh, i'd love to see new maps/areas being added to this in the future. I'm sure one day they'll figure out how to do that

I will get SJS one day! (For context, hunted it for 4 years across GC and BB and never found it.) Any other game I'd have given up, but PSO somehow manages to keep dragging you back in. There is nothing else like it. Great video dude!

Never got hooked by PSO. However I understand everything you are saying. I feel the same way about old school FFXI. Enjoy the game you like. Doesn't have to be all about graphics or latest trend.

Should try Everquest on Project 99 Green. I also played on the same server as you and was grinding out 1 of every rare drop and was loving it but that real serious community feel was 100x stronger on p99

@@deployablelover I'm really glad you replied. I cannot state enough how deep everquest goes in terms of mechanics and classes. I have this sense youre like me and PSO is almost a bit of a chase for what you missed in the MMO scene back in the day. P99 really is an MMO that has no actual successors you have never played anything truly like it. All class and race choices change how you interact with the world.

i love pso 1 &2 but its the kind of game i can only binge for like 3 days once every 3 years. that game felt so much bigger than it was due to the way they did section ids and how that related to the spawnpoint in the areas. however, the mines are always awful, and i also dislike the test zones in ep 2... ep 2 is really short. still, very few things make me feel more happy/ excited than seeing a red box.

I put 250 hours offline single player into Dreamcast PSO ver 2 I loved it that much! It is pure addiction fuel. I got really into PSU online a few years later. Glad I stopped playing years ago. It would consume me!

Haven't played it in over a decade, but back when I did I played offline until I was around lvl 100. (no clue how long it took me as I was a snotnosed brat at the time 😂) Some things I remember; I think it wasn't a very hard to get weapon if I remember correctly? But I felt like a badass when I got that soul eater weapon. I also remember there may have been like... A second version? Or upgraded version? Not sure how that went tbh. I also remember is that I once found a... I wanna say "red saber"? It was like a special version of the basic saber or something if I remember correctly, but it was for some reason WAAAY higher level than my character. Spent quite some time with being able to equip it being a goal. I never did get to a level where I could use the darn thing though... 😂🤦

I still have the dreamcast & gamecube versions. only game close to PSO is probably monster hunter because of the easy in and out gameplay. other MMO's have too much BS then elitist ruin everything buy needed a 50 page tank and spank manual.

Yes I totally agree! I dabble in MMO’s from time to time but I just always come back to the complex simplicity of PSO. It’s a blast for me!
