To be fair, not getting drafted, by Welker's own admission, made him work harder. If he was drafted in the third round would he have been just as good? Maybe, but some guys need external motivation, heck, everyone has heard about how Kurt Warner was released from his first team. Sometimes you need to fail before you get the work ethic needed to succeed. The real greats of the game are the guys who have superstar talent and work just as hard as the Wes Welker's without needing anyone to tell them to put in the effort.

What fascinates me about top level sports is to see where the limits of human capabilities are, and to see them pushed. How fast is it possible for a human being to run, how high can humans jump, how long can human beings endure the elements, fighting against pain and fatigue, etc. Wes Welker was never an example of some peak of physical human performance, but in my view he's definitely such an example of the very limits of human determination and perseverance. I can't imagine how often he must have been told he wasn't big enough to play football, and maybe that is so, but his heart certainly never was. There just never was any quit in him.

I get what he says at the end of the video about taking the long road to appreciate what you have. When the time came to get my new bike, I had the option to buy off the shelf, or to assemble it myself. I decided to to go the 2nd route. I bought a titanium frame, got online to buy the groupset of brakes, cranks, levers, derailleurs and cables, and even purposely avoided using Shimano by going with Campagnolo instead to complete my bike because (1) Campagnolo makes great equipment, and (2) EVERYONE has Shimano where I live. Which just so happens to be where everyone just buys a bike off the shelf. I didn't want to be 1 of the crowd. After assembling my bike and getting it dialed in to fit me perfectly, I ride my ass off. This "not wanting to be part of the crowd" mindset spills over into my training, and I see every other rider as a target to pass. I'm an old fart and while some of the young bucks disappear into the distance, trying to keep up with them keeps me in pretty good condition, It doesn't bother me as much because the whole time on the because I know the bike I am on inside and out because I took the long road by building that badass MFer myself ;)

Adam Thielen has a similar story. He spent a season on the Vikings' practice squad before making the team.

Da L.G. Netwurk no he wasn't dipshit. New England didn't get a ring during his tenure. Do some research "little kid"

It’s crazy when you put your mind to something and don’t let any one tell you what you can or can’t do..the guys with the chip on their shoulder are the ones that thrive the longest

Welker had the 3 arguably Greatest QBs of all time throwing him the ball. That's a story to tell

A lot of respect for Wes Welker. He got the snot beat out of him on to many occasions under New England.

Welker had GREAT hands and a phenomenal awareness of the defense. I dont care how fast you are if you cant run a good route or catch the ball in less than ideal conditions.

Wes Welker will always be my favorite wide receiver

Man... Schottenheimer was a genius at falling just short of greatness. Can't believe he released Welker. And wasn't it was him that shipped Brees off after injury concern?

Marty Shottemheimer was noted for overlooking great talent. He had Joe Horn in Kansascity but never used him. Michael Dean Perry also became a star in Cleveland after Marty's departure after sitting behind less talented players.

He along with the Patriots revolutionized the Slot receiver position...He should be a hall of Famer..

Ravens and Pats fan...but I knew Welker was special when he was a Dolphin. Glad he had success. Didn't realize he was a Charger initially.

Man, those concussions really took it's toll on him. Listen to him from his rookie season. Sounds/looks like 2 different people.

Yea that’s how boxers be sounding. Tommy hearns is a good example of that. One moment he’s on tv doing the boxing show with Stallone then like a year or so later he sounded very slow aka punch drunk syndrome smh.

You can be the most gifted athlete the nfl has ever seen, but some people can play the game and some cant. Wes Walker could. You dont have to be a crazy athlete to play in the nfl, you just need to be able to play the game!
