To mix in a little history, it would be cool if "we know the way" was in a mix of Maori, Samoan & Tahitian the first time it plays in the movie, then in Hawaiian at the finale. The languages of Polynesia voyaging east, then north.

I'm sure he learned his last name in first grade but didn't learn his first name until high school. Actually it is probably several words in one name.
@simplyfree5855 жыл бұрын
Everyone asking if that’s really his name.. YES! You guys aren’t used to it but in Hawaiian culture it’s 100% normal to have a name that long. Also in the older days especially the ali’i, they would have names even longer. And not just one long name but multiple long names. Most of the time we go by a shortened version of our long hawaiian name. As I’m guessing he probably goes by Kaipu
@ZhangtheGreat4 жыл бұрын
Help me with the pronunciation please. Is it... ...BAY-kur? 😁
@gbisaga3 жыл бұрын
One thing that makes this more understandable (as I'm sure you know, but others probably don't) is that these long names are really a sequence of words, not just one. Everybody's favorite Hawaiian musician, Israel Kamakawiwoʻole, seems to have a very long last name; but it makes more sense when you know it's "ka maka wiwo ʻole" or "the fearless face." I'm not good enough yet with Hawaiian to translate this guy's name, but I suspect the ending is "makani o lono", or "wind of Lono" (or wind of remembrance).
@simplyfree5853 жыл бұрын
@@gbisaga yes exactly these long names often give a phrase pointing to a deeper meaning than just one word. thank you for adding on!

Zebra Savant yes, you can find loads of these in every Polynesian countries, either as first names or last names, that's because they all have a very precise meaning. For example my uncle's name was Ta'ihiamatanoa which means (in Tahitian) "the eyes that just kept crying"

Britney Akana indeed, I was intensely thinking about the many ā'ai describing Maui as a thin young man when I saw Disney's version. But the creators explained that they were actually going to give us an accurate version of him but thought a thin young boy didn't look 'heroic' enough for people who did not know our ancestral ā'ai.

Moana represents all Polynesian cultures, so there is not just "one original" language, but a lot of related languages in one big family. BTW, the meaning of "moana" means oceans and this word is shared across many Polynesian languages.

Man these people got more European blood than anything
@Hiililylani5 жыл бұрын
Alex O doesn’t make them less Hawaiian. Blood quantum is a colonizer creation used to kill of indigenous cultures, telling us because we’re not “enough” of our culture, we can’t be part of it or identify with them. And just so happens they implement it on cultures that have history of colonization and intermixing with Europeans. How convenient for them... Doesn’t matter if they’re part European. They’re still Hawaiian. We are still Hawaiian.
@IslenoGutierrez4 жыл бұрын
Lily Kim-Dela Cruz Colonizers? Damn, you got the haole hate bad... don't you... Blood quantum is not about "colonizers" discriminating (Europeans don't colonize anymore, just stop the victim hood already) discriminating cultures, it's to see how much of that ancestry you have. It's obvious that you are of Haole ancestry and also by your Spanish surname that you are either Spanish or Filipino (I'm Spanish descent and my surname is Spanish) and there is no shame in that. But you must come to the realization that although you may be local Hawaiian (Hawaiian doesn't even mean Hawaiian anymore, how do you like that) it's not the same as being native Hawaiian and to say, a Native Hawaiian may even view most locals in Hawaiian as a "colonizer" because most locals are not Native Hawaiian and it is the local population that has replaced the Native Hawaiians as the population of Hawaii.
@IslenoGutierrez4 жыл бұрын
Alex O Yes, they do. The guy has a British surname and the girl has a Portuguese surname. Both have European ancestry, possibly mixed with Hawaiian and some other Asian ancestries.
