The Red Dragon of Sofia - Ikarus 280 / Червеният дракон на София - Икарус 280

Enjoy the Ikarus 280.59 city bus of Sofia, which was renovated a few years ago. Till today this is the model with the longest operation in Sofia - more than 40 years! The first Ikarus 280 buses were entered in service in 1974 and the last ones were in a regular service till the summer of 2015. During this period, more than 900 buses were delivered for the needs of the public transport in Sofia.
Following the decommissioning of the last buses of this model thanks to pressure from NGOs and transport enthusiasts, two buses with inventory numbers 2412 and 2427 were saved from scrapping, with one of them (2412) refurbished and brought back to life as a museum vehicle. The renovated bus is powered by a Rába D10 engine and a Voith automatic gearbox. Hopefully in the future the other preserved bus - 2427 also will be refurbished. It will be more authentic due to its original manual gearbox.

Насладете се на градския автобус Икарус модел 280.59, който бе реновиран преди няколко години. Към днешна дата именно това е модела автобуси с най-дългогодишна експлоатация в София - повече от 40 години! Първите Икарус 280 са въведени в експлоатация през 1974 г., а последните излизат от служба през лятото на 2015 г. През този период за нуждите на градския транспорт в София са доставени над 900 автобуса!
След извеждането от експлоатация на последните Икарус 280, благодарение на натиска на неправителствени организации и любители на транспорта, два автобуса с инвентарни номера 2412 и 2427 бяха спасени от бракуване, като единият от тях (2412) беше ремонтиран и върнат към живот като музеен екземпляр. Обновеният автобус се задвижва от двигател Rába D10 и автоматична скоростна кутия Voith. Силно се надявам в бъдеще и другият запазен автобус - 2427 да бъде обновен и приведен в движение, заради по-автентичната ръчна скоростна кутия, с която е оборудван.

Last January, 14/01/2024, we were in Sofia and saw this wonderful Ikarus! As Greeks, museum buses are not common! We were invited but we couldn't go. We have bought a Saracakis Volvo B10M which was from 1992 to 2007 in service in the city of Thessaloniki!

Чудесно видео! И аз много бих искал да видя и 2427 реставриран, но, чувам от различни хора, че е много разграбен, и трудно ще бъде възстановен...

Той автоматик, гледам - не знаех, че и у нас е имало такива! В Пловдив си бяха с ръчни скорости Икарусите.

Да, имаше немалко Икаруси в София с автоматични кутии. Преоборудвани са с такива доколкото знам при смяната на мотора от Д2156 на Д10.

Nice to see the bus back in service. Did it receive the D10 motor and Voith gearbox during renovation or did some of them have it when they were withdrawn from service?

It was with the D10 motor and automatic gearbox before the renovation. Many buses received D10 motor in the past during overhauls and some of them also the automatic Voith gearbox.
