"The Red Room" is a short gothic story written by H. G. Wells in 1894. It was first published in the March 1896 edition of The Idler magazine. An unnamed protagonist chooses to spend the night in an allegedly haunted room in Lorraine Castle. He intends to disprove the legends surrounding it. Despite vague warnings from the three infirm custodians who reside in the castle, the narrator ascends to "the Red Room" to begin his night's vigil.

Great as always Ian ! Kinda reminds me of a weird day when we were installing better HVAC in a mansion in NJ, lights kept going out, sockets failing randomly and odd sounds, very dark weather day too, very creepy which made me see it as amusement, took longer but I got my stuff done but 3 other trade guys had already left due to sounds and etc, some ppl can handle spooky old homes and some can't, even when there's an obvious ghost like a rocking chair w no reason for it to move, I just addressed whoever, explained what I was doing, how HVAC works and that we're improving the house's comfort, most of the time ghosts seem cool with it, respect and protocol goes a long way w the occupants, alive or not. Northern NJ has a lotta history so lotta ghosts, such is life, makes it interesting.

As for other HG Wells stories, HorrorBabble has not done "The Sea Raiders" yet; which is good critter horror. "The Strange Orchid" is also good, though with an element of humor that undercuts any horror.

possibly a freaky friday coincidence but fridays flog it was based in woking, complete with a tribute to wells. woking was hg wells home from 1895-1896. it was also the first place the martians invaded and destroyed in the original serialisation and later book.guess he didn't like it much.
