I know that John Cena‘s relationship to Fred is already covered in this video, but as John Cena is currently on an absolutely crazy upward turn as an actor thanks to his shocking well received performance as Peacemaker in James Gunn’s Suicide Squad universe, I think it bears repeating. John Cena started acting because the WWE asked him to do it as a way of marketing their brands. And he didn’t enjoy Acting until finding the fun while doing Fred. He has gone on record in modern interview saying that Fred was the moment where he realize he actually enjoyed acting. It took him over a decade to actually find a Director who could use him properly like he was used in Fred, but we wouldn’t have the peacemaker character without Fred the movie.

I think the reason why Fred the TV Show holds up so well is because it's actually... _nice._ It is a fundamentally _kind_ show. This is especially clear after watching the iCarly video. Fred the show has none of the casual comedic cruelty that defined iCarly and so much other Nickelodeon content during that period. Sure, it made fun of its characters, but ultimately it always came back around to being sympathetic towards them. And unlike iCarly, instead of paying lipservice to celebrating weirdness while the narrative punished anyone who was actually weird, it _truly_ celebrated weirdness, something that was kind of unavoidable given how deeply weird the Nick version of Fred actually was. And in this world of cynicism, cringe culture, and anonymous cruelty, a show that lets its characters be truly, deeply weird and then loves them all anyway... that's a refreshing change of pace.

I find it incredibly funny that John Cena's take on Fred and youtubers in general in 2009 is more thoughtful and forward looking than a lot of people still hold today. Especially as someone who became famous/a celebrity through the "normal" path, it'd be easy for him to look down on Fred's popularity as not real or lesser than his own. The Fred TV show seems like exactly the type of thing that'd become popular on the internet. Random absurdist moments thrown in that you could completely miss because it's played straight. Looking into it a bit deeper I think that the stereotypes of the characters actually portray a really good lesson. You can see how Fred is seen as very annoying so not many people like him but the most important thing is that not many people like Kevin either. I think it's really important to know that most bullies aren't actually liked by the majority of a School population and seeing this acknowledged in TV show really sets up good morals for kids knowing that it's not fun to be the bully and that won't make you popular but also being a weird nerdy kid isn't really the best thing for your social life. Probably wasn't meant to be taken that way but I thought it was a really good message especially with most of that times media portraying bullies as the most popular kid in school when usually that's not the case.

I think our perception of Fred was warped by the Fred videos that were more memorable, which were mainly the annoying ones, but looking back on it it was actually a pretty clever dark comedy concept. I am pretty familiar with Fred Lore because of another youtuber that reviewed the movies (albeit in a much more negative light), and a critique from that youtuber that I've seen replicated a lot is that Fred's background is too dark and that it seems out of place for a kid's show and I kind of agreed. However, now I realize that that was the point all along, the backstory is supposed to feel dark and out of place in contrast with Fred's childlike persona. Lucas even at his young age managed to create something really special and creative, it's sad that so many people are so quick to disparage his work and talent.

(For context I knew nothing about Fred before this) For everything pre- Fred the movie I was really into it. I desperately wanted more of this character, because a story about a kindergartener being abused from the perspective of that kindergartener sounds and is so interesting to me. Especially the implications of how Fred was dealing with that through what I could only describe as delusions. I was so desperately hoping that it would continue, but deep down I knew that big companies just saw it as a way to get more money through topical references. Genuinely the saddest part was how little and insignificant the original story became to writers. I want more pre-nick Fred!

I always assume Fred the show was nothing but typical lolrandom nonsense like a lot of shows of the era or generic repetitive jokes like most Nick sitcoms at the time, but it may be the way Quinton explains them but I'm honestly surprised at how the randomness of the situations are actually very well tied together to the timeline of events and also have their own surreal coherent-ness within the confines of Fred's world. Like, every random over-the-top situation has a path to follow as every event leads into the next rather than just randomly tossing stuff hoping it sticks. That's genuinely very well crafted

Agreed. I'm actually mad that Quinton kind of made me want to watch the show

I feel kind of stupid for saying this, since its the Fred Movie we're talking about, but the party scene at Judy's house emotionally hurts me a lot more than it used to now that I've experienced social rejection and know what it feels like. I don't remember that part being too much of an emotional moment for me back then, but looking at it now, it's just heartbreaking.

it’s so weird how a lot of the story beats and parts of the fred movie are actually alright and could’ve been good if they put any work in making the movie

In case anyone else was wondering: Yes, the actress playing Kevin’s mother is indeed the Flo Progressive lady.
