All the harbingers of collapse are visible: crumbling infrastructure; chronic underemployment and unemployment; the indiscriminate use of lethal force by police; political paralysis and stagnation; an economy built on the scaffolding of debt; nihilistic mass shootings in schools, universities, workplaces, malls, concert venues and movie theaters; opioid overdoses that kill some 64,000 people a year; an epidemic of suicides; unsustainable military expansion; gambling as a desperate tool of economic development and government revenue; the capture of power by a tiny, corrupt clique; censorship; the physical diminishing of public institutions ranging from schools and libraries to courts and medical facilities; the incessant bombardment by electronic hallucinations to divert us from the depressing sight that has become America and keep us trapped in illusions. @daniel46479 ай бұрын
Not really, in many European countries conflict of interest is not legal, so if they want to lick corporate butt they have to hide it of face the consequences. Obviously some still do, so it's still a problem, but at least we try to kick them out as best we can. It's not just business as usual like it is in the US with the "donations" that would be considered illegal many other places, taking any donations like that would disqualify them from having any political position. They work around it by getting paid after they leave their post sometimes, but it's still no where near what it's like in the US where it's just out in the open and accepted. In my country we just forced a former prime minister to resign their political post because of conflict of interest, if it was the US that would be every single President and probably most politicians if not all of them. Point is, there are lots of places where it's harder to get away with corruption because we actively try to avoid it instead off building it into the system.

Look at the voting trends since Trumpy lost. He lost the popular vote to Clinton by 3 million votes. His reelection bit failed even though he got more votes than any previous incumbent... because voter turnout was larger than usual. The GOP keeps losing elections and ballot initiatives (everywhere except where the gerrymandering is too large to overcome). And the numbers in this primary process show him winning a slim majority in most races... but voter turnout is setting record low numbers. 40% of 14% of eligible GOP voters isn't half the country. The loudest racists, bigots, homophobes, and nationalists are getting heard because of the false equivalence of a "both sides" approach to reporting. Reasonable humans who might be conservative, still want to retain this democratic republic. The many Trump 2020 banners haven't become Trump 2024 banners. There are some, but there used to be so many more. MAGA politicians have poisoned their own well. I could be very wrong, but I think the fascists are losing. @@somecontrol268

@sleekitwan9 ай бұрын
Another great piece Jon. Many Americans are mystified, but I can say that the reason why Trump is inexplicably ‘popular’ is visceral. That’s why it defies logic. There’s something extremely basic, that probably won’t be said out loud much, that is why he gets votes. Frustration, is a large part of it ‘Can SOMEBODY just do SOMETHING!’ is a feeling many voters are having course through their veins at the moment. In the US, they are desperately in need of a big single-insurance healthcare system - if executed well, they could afford the best for almost every US citizen. That’s the shame of it. The lack of a safety net, really makes people turn quite bitter and hard, towards others, who they think are being handed stuff for free, that they’ve had to work damn hard for. This, we can all understand. Trump getting substantial votes and lots of donations, despite being a pretty awful human being, really tells you America needs a reset. Like we do in the UK. I admire Americans of all backgrounds - theirs is a hard country and a hard way to live. The pandemic showed very affluent people, crowdfunding to save their house. Not necessary, shouldn’t be needed. It’s bad governance that it happens - one day, we all get sick either through accident or old age, and most of us end up poorer too, especially if you need a long period of care before your demise. Democracy is a struggle. Obama was a great win for most of the planet, and America benefited from reason - if only he’d been there during 9/11, a proper investigation would have occurred. This is the problem we face, America changes its character, to assume that of the President of the day. Biden is group-think really, which isn;t the worst way to go, but Trump is truly diabolical. And he wouldn’t think ‘diabolical’ an insult, so there’s another worry. Trump’s biggest bad point? He’s a coward. Soft as wet clay, against the likes of Putin. He talks tough when he’s distant, but when he’s near them, it’s like they know exactly how to work him, and they can make him say anything they want. They just massage his flagging ego, or use the blackmail material they have, maybe he likes little boys, who knows. What happens in Russia may stay in Russia, if you say and do what we tell you. Trump is fundamentally a weak man never able to be himself, and so he could never grow up into a true human being with flaws and good points, with a character worth looking up to, or respecting at least. When people are given a tough life, they want to see others get it just as tough - so it’s not exactly racism, why people vote Trump, it’s more like pauper-ism. If someone else is bottom of the heap, then you may feel you are part of something better. That’s what Trump works on people with. Latinos not wanting more of themselves coming in easily, after all, they would only be competing for the exact same work. Like I said, the USA is a hard country, and I keenly do not want to follow that example, I’ve been a landlord and done well sometimes, not other times. I know what both sides look like to an extent. I don;t believe crushing others, helps me, but it can be a persuasive and triggering bunch of arguments. Take care all.
