The new Renault Zoe, an electric car for £13,999 on the road.
Many people have asked how far I drove. I had 2 days driving the car, I followed set routes Renault organised and covered between 60-80 miles in the morning, stopped for lunch for one hour and charged the car using their rapid charger, then did a further 80 miles. I never got anywhere near a low battery, the Zoe could easily get past 100 miles on a charge.

Hi there zlozlozlo I don't think the fact that I didn't mention 'Better Place' is part of some covert conspiracy, it's not relevant to this car. The only Renault car that Better Place use is the Fluence, the Zoe is not being used in the scheme. Also, I'm hearing a lot of sad reports about the financial state of better place, I'm not yet convinced it's a plausible business model.

Personally, and this is just my opinion, Climate change and fossil fuel use are not connected in any way. Sure, the human race can limit the effects of climate change, just as they can extend the productive life of oil wells. If this is what they desire! Whether we can limit the effects of Climate change without using up all our oil is another matter, and it will take brains far better than mine to think of ways. Solar, wind, wave or whatever renewable ways there are of generating electricity will make our lives much easier if they are allowed to develop fully. But that is in the future, and we have it within ourselves to extend that future. It is up to us.
@johnbenton4488

Nothing would surprise me, but where is the money and expertise to combat or at least mitigate these effects? We hear lots about why it's happening, but next-to-nothing about what we do about it.

Your statement is a paradox. Actually the more EV's the lesser the demand for fossil fuel, the lower the price per galon and finally the more the supply. That's business 1on1

Yes, now, 3 years later, we had a shot in this in the UK. We took it on a comparative run, same as a Clio new model from the same dealer. Now, there was just a smidgeon of implication the dealer would prefer us not to buy this car, but rather the Clio. Dealers do make money on servicing, and what would you buy a £600 3-year servicing pack for, on an electric vehicle?! Anyway, having a family settled it for us, the Clio is a bigger class of car, they are not a direct comparison, and so the Zoe wasn't given a fair crack in that regard. I liked it, but my spouse wasn't even interested enough to swap into the driving seat. POINT: it pays to recall, that in a two-car family, the adults may well choose to buy a car in effect, almost as if they were buying in isolation in SOME respects, but as a family in others! Actually quite a complicated purchasing decision-making process? Thus, yes, my spouse chooses a small compact but still family car, but she is keen I get a Volvo.

Two things about renting the battery: 1) Read the contract. It says Renault HAS TO provide a battery for the entire life span of the car. They may not leave you stranded without a battery as long as the car is usable. 2) A bought battery will degrade as well, so you need to put some money aside if you want to replace it sometime. You may feel like betting on cheaper batteries in the future, but most will opt for the better battery when available at the same price.
@flitsies
@flitsies 10 жыл бұрын
The price of the car is fine, however the battery rental is the problem, as with the twizzy in the UK the battery rental price is very expensive and restrictive, so even though you rent the battery you are limited to how many miles you can do for your rental fee. The idea is good, but the practice is bad, the twizzy in the UK has not taken off, not because the UK doesn't like the twizzy but because it is a ridiculous price on the rental of the battery. One other thing regarding cost, the price of electricity is going up, each charge may only cost around £1 but for your £1 you only get around 100 miles if that, add the cost of the rental to the cost of the charge, plus the cost of servicing and so on over an average year and there will be very little difference in cost overall, now take into account the resale value of the vehicle, and suddenly this car is mega expensive cos very few people will buy it second hand and set up a rental for the battery.

Zoe makes a lot of sense as a 2nd car in a family (let alone for companies driving their cars in/around cities...). It has an autonomy ranging from 100 km (worst consumption with full accelerations, top speed, air-conditioning etc.) up to more than 200 km (actually it has 210 km on ''New European Driving Cycle'' which means you could strech it to 250 km if you take hyper care) - i.e. note a 150km autonomy which is decent. It has a top speed of 135 km/hr which is decent for city-suburban use.

Hi TearyEyesAnderson, I just want to say that when I made the car swerve that was entirely to show the wonderful traction and responsiveness of the car, another car passing makes no difference, this car is heavier than a standard ICE car, needs a tornado to make it wobble.

If the 2nd generation Zoe - hopefully having suchgreat looks! - has an average autonomy around 300km, with top speed about 150km with same cost of purchase and batter lease then it will be a HUGE success.

My current car for what it is is quite economical, a Kia Sorento, and I do approx 25 miles per day commuting, I rarely use it at weekends now as we also have a Tesla Model S. So currently I spend approx £165 a month on fuel and ved. My new Zoe costs including battery rental is less than £200 a month over a 2 year PCP, and with minimal cost to recharge, I get a new car for commuting for the princely sum of £30 a month more than I pay to keep a 10 year old Kia on the road, ooh and I also save £100 on insurance too.

I appreciate everything you say and I certainly don't mean to do BP down, someone did very specifically ask the Renault people at the Zoe press launch, they stated quite categorically that they are only supplying Fluences for the project. I think there's a lot of skepticism about it because, in same ways like hydrogen, it's seen as the perfect solution for covering greater distances among people who don't drive EV's. Those few of us who do aren't worried about 'range anxiety.'

Quick calculation: An electric car where you own the battery is 10k more expensive than this one where you don't own the battery. The battery is 70 a month. So with those 10k you saved, you can pay the monthly battery costs for almost 143 months. That is almost 12 years! So most probably you won't own the car anymore when the monthly costs ate the 10k saved in the beginning. Plus you'll get a new battery when the capacity drops below 75%. Here in Germany, the "rent"-model is more common.

One serious addition to this: A huge part of the expenses of a combustion car are created by maintenance, repair and overhaul! A friend of mine just spend another 3500€ on his second turbocharger of his BMW. Here you do not have this need. No timing belt, no oil changing, no sparks, no clutch, no turbocharger etc. If you calculate those real costs together, 80€ is nothing.

Hi Alastair I company we had been talking to who supplies our charge points have a basic charger which you can put a CE17 plugtop on, this will suit the Menekes inlet on European built EV's. The company can be found at m2c.ie Renault aproved manufacturer. The basic unit is around €700, however if you want to plug into a 1363 socket you will need an additional wifi controler to allow you to reduce the input current below 13 Amp. You could confirm exact details by contacting them.

The heat pump which is just an aircon that can pump both ways so doesn't cost anymore, doesn't actually provide 3 times the efficiency in all cases. The catch is that the greater the temperature difference the less efficient it is. So the irony is that when it's really cold and you need the heating, a simple heater element is just as good or better. Wiki suggests that typically happens around -18c so it should be more efficient a lot of the time.

No more getting into a freezing or boiling car. These are luxuries that simply aren't available on any petrol car, regardless of what you pay, yet the car is really much cheaper!

At this price, with the Battery rental costs, I think my choice would be a 2nd hand Leaf. They are around £15k now, but without the rental costs on the battery. mileage is around 8k at that price so barely "run in". Still the Zoe is nice looking thing and if you did more miles per month than we would in a 2nd car the numbers may well add up. Thw wifes jazz eats about £40 per month in petrol, returns about 35-40mpg and is used around town.

A lot of the interior heat on an ICE car comes from the heat from burning the fuel-- heater cores always have a loop of coolant going through them for this purpose. An electric doesn't have this option, so a heat pump type system is an ideal fit for such cars.

The biggest problem I have with electric cars is not with the cars, but the charging. I live in an apartment, and in fact a very large percentage of the populations lives in rentals, and we don't have any way to charge an electric car. We can't put in a 240 charging station, we mostly don't have garages or even designated parking (where I'm at). But at the same time the people who likely need something like this the most are apt living city dwellers.

I remember reading about the Zoe on your Twitter feed Robert. My interest in car remains the same (intrigued), although (*gets out a deckchair*) it could have done with some "questions" in between the cuts. :) Anyway, Renault needs to remember there are those that give names to their cars all by themselves (and not a reworking of "zero emissions"). Be it names like "Betsy" or "Zatanna" (what I'd name the Zoe if I had one) and all the other names including - but not limited to - "F**ker". ;)

Renault can (and might well) change the terms of the contract, their current (UK) Zoe web page says, when commenting on the £70/month charge - "Terms and conditions including excess mileage charges will apply, prices subject to change." Further they seem to suggest that the buyer will negotiate the duration of the contract, so if you want it for 3 years or 4 they will price it accordingly. What happens when that is up? They retain control of the batteries, you pay £14k for a shell.

As the car costs around 13,000 euros, i.e. the equivalent of an eqquiped thermic-car, the 70 euros per month cost plus the electricity cost (especially where electricity has a moderate price) is very attractive and falling to half of a thermic car, if one rises to more than 15,000 per year. Still I do believe that the Zoe can be only a 2nd car in a family for city-suburban use. Buying a 13,000euro car and not being able to go out for a weekend to a distance of about 150-200km is quite limiting.

Interesting little car Rob. £70 does seem a bit steep considering the 7500 mile per year limit before you start incurring extra charges, granted it is much cheaper that other electric cars but it does largely offset the fuel cost advantage of electric. Especially if you don't drive many miles a year.

I think it's just a matter of time for the cost of electricity to go up. As more and more people buy electric cars and charge them overnight the electric companies will start charging more overnight (whether they are on cheap night rate or not). As long as the electrical power used to charge it comes from a non fossil fuelled power grid I'd be quite happy to have one.

+deiz92 As home battery storage becomes cheaper (which it will once the batteries of first gen EVs get depleted to ~60-70%, it makes sense for car makers to re-purpose and re-sell the batteries they swap out, rather break them up for re-cyc) then rooftop PV feeding into the battery in the day, stored and re-used for charging the car at night, ready to go in the morning. I imagine serious EV manufacturers will probabaly offer Car and PV Store'n'charge bundle packages, and I imagine energy companies will be in on that.

And I am still not sold on not owning the battery, for a couple of reasons. For most middle-class folks, if we have to buy a car and make payments, we really look forward to the day when we complete those payments! I know- you can equate the battery rental as just moving the cost of fuel- but that is just not going to sell to most folks Also, at some point in the future, when you go to sell that Zoe, it is going to be: by the way, you have to sign a battery rental contract as well.

I got the contract from my Renault dealer before buying the Twizy. It defines "life span" simply as the complete time the car is used. And no, Renault do not have to upgrade your battery if a better one is available. I assume they will offer an optional upgrade for a higher rate, but time will tell. I also assume there will be third party alternatives in a few years.

From what I heard Zoe has been developed to allow battery switching as well. They just won't say it out loud unless you specifically ask them. BP's model is viable, and I don't think the multi-billion dollar Israel Corporation is going to let them sink.

I don't accept that premise. Yes the 100k$ model S is fast but fast in EVs costs very little. Audi A6 starts at 42k$, S6 at 72, A7 at 60, A8 at 72. Base Tesla S costs 70k$ now plus a few thousand more hidden expenses such as supercharger access, chargestation at home, navigation package, paint. That's something like 8000$ more just for the little things and that's not even including the active air suspension. That's extra too. So are the rear facing seats. 3000 extra if you want that as well.

The Renault Zoe is 4,084 mm long, the Ford Ka is 3,620 mm long and the Ford Fiesta is 3,950 mm or 4,067 mm long depending if you are looking at the 2008-2010 model or the 2011 onward model so It is definately nearer to the size of a Fiesta than a Ka, very interesting though

Great car, nearly bought one, but the battery rental and rental conditions kept me from doing so. I don't want an EV and then I have to pay monthly for a battery.

My problem with electric car, is that the technology becomes more and more efficient and a lot of people I know, are waiting for some sort of standard to appear and people just don't want to invest a lot of money for a car which may not be compatible with any standard they suddenly decide on. History has shown this to be a problem in the past and when technology is in flux, everyone sits at the side to see who comes out a winner and THEN the popularity of these cars will explode. Mark my words.

"why don't car companies make batteries which can be easily serviced just in case". The Zoe battery is designed to swap out in less than 5 minutes! Cool or what!

The braking system is the that was applied on a very old french car. Peugeot 10X or Renault 5 ? I can't remember. Basically the first half of the brake pedal used the regen then the second half used the mechanical brakes. Did Renault tell you about the price of the wallbox to charge the car ? Too bad you can't use a normal plug to charge it, so if you go meet some friends you have to be sure they are not further away than (let's say) 70km.

What they are really selling is 'battery insurance,' I think- and it shouldn't be necessary. Unfortunately, it speaks volumes of where battery technology is currently at. I am a HUGE proponent of EVs- but, bottom line, to get beyond the early adopters, we still need a better battery. And we will- it is just going to take some time;-)

You are right. Now start wondering why companies did not do the evident, i.e. make cars electric, charged by small cheap tech. batteries (pluggable at home too....) that give an autonomy of 30-40 km, charged by a generator (just ANY generator, petrol, diesel, LNG, CNG, solar etc. etc.) to increase the autonomy to 10 to 20 times that. The justification that price would be high is ridiculous as most models would actually wear similar-designed motors/gens The tech. exists for some 100 years now.

You have to consider that the 7500 miles is only equivalent to 144 miles a week, or a 28 mile (14 miles one way) commute. Something that this car should be ideally suited for! To charge a lease for the batteries unnerves me enough about the commercial influence the company will have on my choice is bad enough - but to then put a mileage limit on them shows that they want to restrict my freedoms. I think Renault are making a big mistake and giving ammunition to EV detractors by doing so.

Going to be getting a Renault Twizy for now. Then in five or so years will change to this car. Or it's future equivalent.

So far I like the ZOE - it´s a good looking little car. Wonder if "sport" versions will come to E-cars when they get more common ?.

Great show good to see you back reviewing electric cars again. I really hope the Zoe is a big success as it addresses most of the concerns over electric cars, i spend over £70 a week on fuel so £70 a month on battery rental is a big saving. Robert can you tell us what other car reviews will be coming up in this series? will you be driving the Tesla model X? Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV? Ford Fusion?

2/3 BP has made mistakes, but those mistakes have been mostly in marketing and in dealing with local (country-level) dealers in Israel. They are rectifying this, and sales are picking up. Last month the sales were somewhere around 0.6% of all cars sold that month in Israel. Norway has the highest percentage of new EVs, and it's somewhere around 1%. At this rate Israel will overtake them very quickly thanks to BP.

Hi Robert It was very hard to determine from the static cutaway shot if the battery has heat pump thermal managment like the Fluence, Do you know if it has or is it left to fend for itself?

I am sure that the battery rental cost will be a problem. An owner will have to work out if the car (@£14,000) + battery rental at £900 a year makes financial sense. But I suspect, for car doing around 5000 miles a year,18p a mile is quite a lot JUST TO RENT THE BATTERY! Add depreciation to the cost and it start to look a bit expensive. But my big concern is that Renault will simply stop leasing you the batteries when they want to sell you a new car and you are left with an unsellable car.
