HAPPY 2024 WE MISSED YOU ALL!!!
Sorry for our short 2 week hiatus, but we are back to weekly uploads for the rest of the year.
Today's episode is the Renee Rapp effect. Her story is a beautiful one because she is living proof that your direction is more important than your speed. Renee has always had this north star in her career, music, and her relentless pursuit of that dream. The first step of your career does not have to look like the last step. No matter how small the step, or how big the setback, Renee always kept moving in the direction she knew she was meant to.

ppl calling her an industry plant is sooo annoying like just admit you’re not up to date on the newest music artists! it’s okay to not know who people are!! she’s literally new, this is her mainstream breakthrough, ofc you probably have never heard of her. discrediting someone’s career and work just because YOU PERSONALLY don’t know her is crazy. takes less time to type “renee rapp” into google than it does to type “industry plant” into a random comment section

People don’t even know what industry plant actually means. It used to be used for people who pretended they came up independently or without a label, but they actually did have a lot of backing behind the scenes. It’s so funny when people call someone like Olivia Rodrigo an industry plant because she was literally on Disney, there was never an attempt to pretend she came up on her own. I feel like people have forgotten what traditional artist development is.

Reneé mentioned she’s a very ambitious person with big dreams that are specific asf. She literally said the only way she saw herself getting into the music industry was through acting which is why she did TSLOCG in the first place; so ofc any opportunity she got to leave that show to pursue music she‘s gonna leave. She also manifested that she wants to do SNL (which she just did) and become an EGOT by the age of 40. So yeah this girl is here to stay for a long time and I’m excited for her.

it’s SO refreshing to see an actress/artist that is so genuinely herself in every single way. she’s so vulnerable, authentic, unapologetic and open anytime she’s on a screen whether it’s acting, singing or in interviews and that is getting more and more rare these days. her insane talent and sense of humor are truly some of the most unique and memorable characteristics i’ve ever seen. her SNL performance of snow angel was out of this world. i don’t even know if she knows how good she is. watching her sing or talk or quite honestly do anything is addicting. i’m smitten with her, to no surprise, everyone should be!

This is my first time coming across y'all, but I love the talking points y'all made so much! Seeing people call Reneé an industry plant is definitely weird when she's been so organically in the algorithm of different platforms. For me in particular I definitely have to thank TikTok for putting a clip of her just being her funny, talented self on The Terrell Show on my fyp back in August of last year, because it's what really made me keep my eye on her (in the midst of all the content I consume as a music enjoyer & kpop stan lol) to the point where I checked out her album Snow Angel a month later and fell in love with all the tracks and her vocal/lyrical delivery. Although, I didn't do my super big deep dive of her interviews, live performances, & broadway/theatre content until sometime earlier this month after her New Years Eve performance and the Mean Girls press tour had really got to rolling. I've only been a "hardcore stan" for a short time, but I'm already so so proud of her after her SNL guesting/performances and the fact that she's going to all these big music festivals soon. I'm just so excited for her ongoing journey and to see what she does for her sophomore album

When you guys discussed legacy being cemented by leaving at a peak - i immediately thought of an example in a different field. In the sport of formula 1 (a racing series), driver Nico Rosberg cemented his legacy by leaving at the peak of his career upon beating one of the greats, Lewis Hamilton, in the 2016 wdc title. Although his victory was a feat in and of itself, his immediate retirement led to a reputation he never could have maintained had he remained in the sport. It’s really interesting that the idea of peaks transfers through different industries!

I love that song too, and it’s extra meaningful to me bc I actually did move to Colorado (Denver) after my second year of college bc I needed a big change in my life and Colorado looked beautiful to me. @@tmendes24 Yeah there’s a lot of great things about Colorado but also a lot that can negatively impact mental health. On the one hand, Colorado gets 300 days of sunshine, but on the other, half of the year everything is just dead and brown. Also with more and more transplants moving here it has turned into the next California. When I first moved here at 5 years old (Boulder) it was a very hippie town. Now it’s overrun with incredibly wealthy people and those who lived here 20 years ago, like my family did, can no longer afford it.

I probably going to get hate for saying this. But let’s be honest the movie of Mean Girls was made for Reneè Rapp to put her more in the spotlight. Watching the movie for the second time made me realize that. It’s clearly that they wanted her to really shine in the movie. I listen to the most of the original soundtrack from the broadway show. And they cut a lot of the songs and cut some parts in Meet the Plastics songs only to showcase Reneè voice. I think that’s is the fact why people are saying she is an industry plant. The girl is very talented and she got a great voice.
@bigb8208
@bigb8208 3 ай бұрын
Nope. It was actually the opposite way. They first announced it when they were still running the show on Broadway but it was post lockdown by the time casting started. The movie was originally set to go straight to Paramount+ but sometime after Reneè's album release they switched to a theatrical release probably because she was in the rise already. Also, about the soundtrack, that was a trainwreck including her songs. The only reason why it's not as bad as the others is bc of her voice, same goes for Jaquel and Auli'i.

Also about "branding herself as an artist": I think a major obstacle is also going to be the reputation Gen Z artists have rn. Olivia Rodrigo and Billie Eilish are considered 'artists', not just singers or writers but truly artists, while pretty much every other contemporary is like a "Tiktok girly". Very short songs, quite generic following trends set by older artists or the two mentioned above and targeting Gen Z. A lot of older generations don't take them seriously. Reneé is doing a great job collaborating with older artists, *singing* and not being known for silly videos, but serious budget productions. Still, a lot of people are not giving her credit for her music, because they expect it to sound a certain way without even listening once. Let's see how it goes, her rise in fame and success over the past year has been insane.

I completely agree on your take of not wanting vertical videos / Tiktoks in movies, but there's no denying that they served a purpose. It's portrayed very "boomer discovers the Internet for the first time", but when we're talking about high school drama nowadays it does involve Tiktok and the Internet in general, although the use is a bit excessive. Telling ppl to not use vertical videos in a movie like this is like telling ppl to not use the text messaging in modern teen movies, because that's just as cringe tbh. They're not going to start writing letters tho and calling is super unrealistic
