harris has outright said she's not going to do anything that only benefits black people. similar sentiments from booker, warren, ect. yet they're being touted as "pro-reparations" even though what harris is proposing (a damn tax cut) would do less to help black folks specifically than what people like bernie are arguing for.

Instead of reparations to specific people, how about using the funds to work on the massive socio-economic consequences of slavery and discrimination? Help out predominantly black neighborhoods, improve schooling so school zones don't change the amount of funds received, etc? I feel like because neither side can come together to fix the unjust systems that contribute to more modern discrimination, politicians feel like the only way to help is with a direct deposit that is only a one-time help. That won't fix the consequences of slavery that still affect black communities. (One day later ... So, a lot of people have a lot of different viewpoints to share below, but what I noticed is every 30 comments or so are either anti-Black or anti-white remarks. So let's be clear - those who are angry at white people, please remember that this generation is not the one that enslaved you or kept you. The racism that exists now is most of the time accidental and based on systemic issues rather than deliberate malicious intent. Those who are angry at black people, or who think the black community is holding a grudge, try to remember that while slavery has ended many of the African-American community still experience rampant racism, police brutality, and an unjust justice system. Anger is a reaction to perceived injustice and so if you're noticing they're angry it is a justified response. Both sides are human beings. We're prone to mistakes, feelings, and remorse. Let's all respect that.)

I agree. It's just a weird concept to me. Yes, slavery was a horrible thing but I don't think it truly affects a slave's descendant that greatly in our time. There are much more recent injustices towards black people, not just decendants of slaves, that affect their daily lives much more. I don't really like the notion of donating wildly, your option seems much more rational to me. If the US were to apologize financially for their past crimes, they'd have to start with Afghanistan, Iraq and even more importantly, Vietnam, where there are still millions of people crippled by the effects of agent orange.
@BeeWhistler5 жыл бұрын
Yeah... if they'd paid the reparations to the slaves themselves, or opted to pay them to any families who still have second or third generation people still living, that might work. But I think a lot of people would ask that the money be invested in training cops to be decent human beings.

We need to be conscious of several facts here. First, blacks are not the only people of color who experience racism. In fact, you're more likely to be murdered if you are an American Indian woman--way too many disappear never to be found every year! American Indians were also enslaved. Would the reparations extend to them? And what about people who don't look black but who have ancestors who were enslaved. Would they be compensated, too? I opposed racism in any form. I also oppose classicism in any form, but we must consider the ramifications of the signals we send if we compensate some, but not all who are affected by racism, misogyny, and enforced poverty.

I’m sorry that’s what happens to you and I wish it wasn’t that way, but there’s no logical reasoning behind me, not a slave-owner, paying you, not a slave, money that I rightfully and legally obtained. If the government back in the 1860s made it so former slave-owners must pay a certain amount to the now freed slaves, that wouldn’t be equal in any way but that would have been one logical way to give back in at least a little bit of money. Now, it’s simply irrelevant. I’m not saying slavery is irrelevant, or the struggles of black peoples are irrelevant, I’m saying that slavery is irrelevant, I’m saying that it wouldn’t have an effect other than as a symbolic gesture. I’ll give an example that’s very toned down to the actual gravity of slavery. I’m not sure if you have an older sibling, but I do, and some teachers didn’t like having my brother in class. So when I came along, they immediately thought the worst of me. I had to prove to my teachers that I was a better student in class than my brother. Hopefully this makes sense, but in this example, my brother would be my ancestors (although as far as I know I had no slave owning ancestors but for the sake of the example we’ll say I did) my teacher represents African American people as a whole, and I represent white people as a whole. Now, what my brother did was wrong, undisputedly, should he have been punished? Yes, of course. Now should I be punished? No I shouldn’t. Simply because we’re not the same person. He should’ve been held accountable, but I can’t be held accountable for something I didn’t do. And also to your other point, I do agree that there is racism in this country. Sadly, there always will be. I know I’m not a racist person, I don’t know you but I’d assume you aren’t either, unfortunately there are racist people. I’m not sure how you’re going to interpret my frickin essay I just wrote, but hopefully it comes off in an understanding and reasonable way.

Put that money towards improving inner city schooling (or just...y'know...education in genera) and confronting racist voter registration policies.

@Alphacron5 жыл бұрын
Just to clarify, I'm not by any means saying 'Oh, slavery is over we shouldn't dwell on it.' There are still very real effects of a racial imbalance that stretches back from that era. My point was more that, at least in my opinion (and I'll fully admit that, being white, I'm definitely biased), it would make more sense to put money and effort more towards confronting racism that extends to all people of color in our society. It's not as though only descendants of slaves suffer the negative effects of that slavery. It's an issue of race, not specifically ancestry.
@Alphacron5 жыл бұрын
Hence why I said 'directly' affected. There's an undeniable fact that people descended from slaves and people descended from the wealthy landowners who enforced said slavery are obviously going to have a disparity. I'm not arguing that, and that definitely contributes to the racial issues in our country today. From a moral standpoint, it's still an absolutely disgusting thing that doesn't get any less repugnant with time. But from a pragmatic standpoint, I feel like the resources that would go into reparations could be better used if the intent is simply to help manage a racial divide.

Germany, while not perfect, at least pays reparations to the Holocaust survivors and their families and those were ALOT. But it is needed because these people were victimized, exploited, killed, murdered, hurt. The government can waste your tax money on unneccessary military shit but not on social issues that could benefit the society? Many descendents, be it slavery or the holocaust can actually genetically pass down that generational Trauma, there have been studies on Holocaust survivors and their families on it. This issue or the consequences of these issues still effect breathing and living people and put them in a disadvantage.
@YouTubePremiumforRealz5 жыл бұрын
The situation with Holocaust reparations is not comparable. The Nazis stole countless amounts of Jewish possessions. All America did was buy people who were already slaves from other Africans. America did not take their freedom. America did not take their possessions.

@littleolmee5 жыл бұрын
While I agree with you a little, thing is there are still living Holocaust survivors today. It makes sense that Germany is still paying money for what happened, but how long do you have to pay after the last survivor passing on? Does that mean your great, great grandkids that never had anything to do with WW2 are still paying the great, great grandkids of a Holocaust survivor? That is kind of the issue with this. If this had been done right after the Civil War than those who had benefitted from slavery could have been made to pay those they enslaved. That would have been fair. Now if you want to say we should pay money to those affected by racism or discrimination money for what they went through then that list is going to be mighty long because why should only African Americans get that when other groups have also faced discrimination? It would make more sense to do things that benefitted everyone in a financial group like free college, college debt forgiveness, Medicare for all, living minimum wage, or I've heard minimum monthly income has been suggested for all Americans. Those things would all help everyone especially those who have faced discrimination.

No one that knows what they are talking about has claimed the USA as "the first" to end slavery. That's obviously ridiculous. But the history of governmentally sanctioned slavery in the USA is FAR shorter than any other country that officially institutionalized slavery. Most nations had legal slavery within their borders for HUNDREDS (or in some cases thousands) of years. The USA had sanctioned slavery for 89 years, if you consider the Declaration of Independence the beginning of the USA. If you consider the constitution's ratification the start, then it's only 76 years. There have now been more generations OUT of slavery than there ever were in slavery. The majority of the founders recognized the evils of slavery, and wanted to abolish it with the Declaration and the Constitution. But left leaning wealthy landowners in the southern colonies were not going to have it. If you place the blame on ideology, it's the safest and most honest place to put it, as ideology never really dies.

I don't know. I really don't think money should be given to people because of what their predecessors went through and not them. Its kind of like if all the Irish demanded payment today from the UK for the genocide of the Great Famine. It was horrible, people were purposefully starved and worked to death because they were Irish Catholics and not British Protestants. But that was over a hundred and fifty years ago. Yes, we are still feeling the affects of that time and look back at it in sadness and pain, but I have never starved as my ancestors did, nor have I suffered the mass beatings and cruelties they suffered at the hands of their supposed superiors. Eventually you just have to accept what happened in the past happened, and its no one's fault today, so no one should be punished or rewarded for something they never even played a factor in. If you want some form of compensation so much, then set up a fund to provide materials to end modern day slavery or provide education. Pay it forwards, not backwards.

So this is how im hearing it. i.e. If your great-grandfather committed a crime and passed away before doing the time for the crime. Then your grandfather's descendants (children/grandchildren) have to be punished for the crime. Meaning that people are born into debt even though they didn't choose the family they were born into.
@willk0084 жыл бұрын
How do you compare talking about killing someone to a debt being owed for work rendered w/o pay. That’s apples to oranges. Now if your dad owns a house but still owes a lien of any kind on that house and dies but he left the house to you, YOU STILL OWE THAT DEBT lol yea that’s how it works in the real world, crazy right I know

This reminds me of the video where all the teens line up and can move ahead based on certain questions asked. Many of the black students are left far behind but have to run the same race. Reparations and or flat out across the board equality at minimum should be had because not only did slavery negatively impact their start but since slavery black people have been living in a different, harsher America than white people. Equal pay and treatment would be a great start.

Look how well reparations helped the Native American tribes, like mine! Oh wait they didn't and started a long line stuck on the American welfare system. Education, NOT compensation! Is the right answer always.

*For all the people who are bringing Native Americans in there arguments about reparations, you don't know your History* 1) Native Americans got land and money from the government *Reservations and Native Americans Rights Fund* 2) Asian Americans also got reparations from the government *In 1988 the Civil Liberties Act gave reparations to Asians Americans* ....more you know

So you want all black people forced to live on reservations if they want reparations?
@thatjillgirl5 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't exactly call being relocated onto reservations "getting land." The Native Americans were (and to some extent, are) sovereign nations that had their land stolen from them and were then told to go live on smaller sections of land. Not exactly a fair trade. Heck, in the case of native Hawaiians, they just straight up had their entire kingdom stolen out from under them.

The easiest way for both reparations and gun regulation to be addressed is for it to actually be talked about by all the major players in one room in a series of conferences. Bring in historians, experts, activists, lobbyists, statisticians, politicians, etc, every heavy hitter on every side, and force them to talk about it outside their echo chambers and defend their stance against facts.

We've been paying "reparations" in welfare for decades. We've been paying "reparations" in Affirmative Action hiring policies for decades. We've been paying "reparations" as trillions of dollars in real estate are destroyed by desegregation. We've paid enough.

@@Excitegaming0 Denying a correlation between gun availability and gun related deaths is the real fantasy, and knives simply aren't as effective at killing, that's pretty fucking obvious. (No duh someone who's trained with a knife can take on someone untrained with a gun) Don't strawman me acting like I'm completely blaming gun availability in America (maybe you wouldn't but you don't really convey nuance) mental health is clearly a factor, and the desire for infamy. Nukes don't kill people, people kill people.. yeah well they make it hell of a lot easier and more devastating than bare hands or a knife, that's why that line is actually retarded. Btw pointing out that places like Chicago have strict gun control and high gun related deaths is a mute point since it isn't difficult to leave the city and take advantage of the "gun show loophole".

Yes. Its about correcting the wealth disparity that most blacks did not get to participate in history as a group. The black culture as a society did not get to partake in the time value of money through the years.
