I really appreciate how they brought Gwen and Sybil's story full circle in the final season. Once Gwen left Downton we never really hear anything else about her, stay for a mention in Season 4 when she writes to Anna that she's getting married. Sybil went above and beyond to help Gwen change her life...for the better. Their friendship was so sweet and inspiring. Tom was right in earlier seasons saying that "none was a free as my Sybil."

"What a lovely way to remember her" Indeed ♥ Also why do I feel like Mary was trying to save Thomas from his pettiness (that she shared at first because she felt offended that Gwen did not say earlier that she used to work here and probably because despite her liberalism she is still surprised by such social uprising). Gwen's story and the memory of Sybil softens her and she's trying to say to Thomas "do as I do, we're fine in the end". These two are each other's alter ego in their social behaviours.

I thought Mary was annoyed that Gwen lied to her, Mary recognized her and just couldn't place her but Gwen was like "Nope, you've never seen me before". This might also have been what set Barrow off, to him it probably was confirmation that Gwen thought she was better than her former coworkers.

I find it quite telling that Gwen hadn’t mentioned to her husband that she worked at the house they were visiting. That sort of climb of social class still wasn’t common and the scene shows the awkwardness of it all. To verbally acknowledge that staff at a house may never have spoken to the family, while it sounded harsh, it was the reality. Before the war, if it had been know Gwen came from a life of service, the family may have not been so kind to her.

But Gwen said her husband knew she was a former housemaid, I think. So she wasn't hiding her past life of service. She just didn't say that she used to work at this particular house, for this particular family.

Thomas deserved that. Who knows if she would’ve said hello before she left? The issue I have with Thomas is that he screws everyone around him and gets upset when it comes back to bite him. @hieuscottle2494
@hieuscottle2494 2 жыл бұрын
@@lisahuber9329 That's just one of many ways to get on Mary's bad side. It's really not hard to get on it. She had her genuine reasons to be angry at the world at times, but her overall place of privilege, wealth, attractiveness, and general disgust of people and need to put people down made her downright petty and nasty...sometimes for no reason, as she acknowledged. That perspective prevented her from seeing how scared and frightened someone like Gwen would have been in that situation since pre-World War II England, as 20th century as it was becoming, was still stuck on an deeply in-grained idea of "place" in society and God-ordaining who will be the "haves" and who will be the "have-nots" and those in service were supposed to be loyal, obedient, and grateful. Gwen wanting to leave service was met with anger by the service staff in series 1 and we know the attitudes of those who employed them would not have been kind as they would have seen Gwen's actions as a sign of disrespect and ingratitude...and may have offended them that they were dining with such a "lowly" person. That is definitely Mary's way of thinking as she's never moved away from being a snob except for when she ended up marrying that used car salesman in the end and that was only because he looked like Matthew Goode as that relationship was badly written and developed and not believable. Another aspect that I think we're forgetting was that Mary suspected she was a servant who became a "self-made" woman who worked her way to financial independence (from the servant system) and then married someone with money (in industry). Mary, being born wealthy and to an Earl was titled. The titled gentry were part of the aristocracy and distrustful of the new industry folks who were socially mobile and infringing upon the old land-rich titled families' territory in terms of power and influence. They were a threat to the Grantham and Crawley way of life and in the end really did upend the whole system. So Mary's initial disdain for Gwen could also have been stemming from Gwen daring to rise above her station to leave service (how dare she thumb her nose at society that benefits our position at the top!) but also marrying a member of industry meant she also became a woman who was not only independent from families than the Grantham and their estate system of exploitation, but being married an industry person meant she was part of the group who was encroaching and overtaking the gentry's place in society by becoming richer than them and being involved in a part of society that was much more relevant to the everyday person AND was progressing society and bringing them to a new frontier. So Mary already had a stank attitude about that and would have kept that stank attitude until Gwen mentioned Sybil.

@@tobynsaunders You said you loved the scene in this episode where Robert reprimanded Barrow. I said that I didn't like that scene, simply because Robert says to Barrow that he should learn from Carson as a butler - and Robert falsely says that Carson is kind. But in reality, Carson is probably less kind than even Robert himself. Some examples are: Robert is more accepting of Barrow being gay. Carson is needlessly cruel and insulting about homosexuality, especially compared to say Mrs Hughes and her tolerance. Robert makes the monument for Mrs Patmore, for her nephew the soldier. But Carson is cruel and says he died a coward and doesn't deserve to be remembered. Robert steps up to save Mrs Patmore again, for her house of ill repute. While again, Carson is unnecessarily cruel and says that the family shouldn't help out Mrs Patmore. But Robert agrees to visit the B&B and take pictures to boost the reputation of the house of ill repute instead.

I think that this speaks volumes about the goal of the series, the principal character is always the Abbey and its value throughout THE MOST important and rapid social changes in history, in a matter of years the world shifted from the 1890s to the 1920s with a totally different way of seeing society and people. It depicts the changes the upper classes and the lower classes went through, from a total immobility to a chauffeur marrying a Lady, a maid seated at the table with the Lord, divorce, a woman inheriting and keeping the estate, to a butler becoming and Hollywood working star later in the story. So. Fascinating. The relationship change so much that the line that divides the upper floor and the downstairs one becomes so blurry that the division becomes just a pure matter of employment.

Does anyone find it weird that the sister said, "we have to find ladders to help them achieve their potential", and then says to Gwen, "but not good enough to stay". Both are contradicting statements and the latter is uncomfortable because it paint Gwen in a negative tone. Gwen is then pressured to explain herself to not look bad because the sister indirectly put words in her mouth. Makes me feel like the sister will say the "right" thing but doesn't actually mean it.

This is a bit misleading. They edited out the part where Gwen basically lies to Lady Mary and the family about how she used to work there. I was with Thomas on this one. Did he have his own personal motives for calling her out? Yes, but I think it was the right thing to do. She acted like she was embarrassed of once being a servant. You could see how that would upset someone like Thomas. They edited so that it seems like he called her out right away. There was a lot of conversation and denial from Gwen before Thomas's interruption which made it all the more shocking. Would it kill you to upload the whole scene so that everyone can see it in full context? Robert calling Carson 'kind' after this just proved how detached he is from his servants lives. If you remember, Carson was bullying Thomas relentlessly during this time.

Maybe she was a bit embarrassed but I think it was more of an awkward situation. And it might have been a bit intimidating to interact with the Crawleys as a former servant than as a random guest. I just think there was a lot of awkwardness she wanted to avoid

@@becciKeks That still doesn't make it right to flat out lie to someone when you know that two people in that room know who you are. I just have a problem with Thomas being made the villain in this scene when it was clearly Gwen who was in the wrong. Furthermore, I don't like them editing out a good chunk of this scene wherein Gwen lies to Lady Mary. It makes Thomas look even worse.

Yeah I'm with you. Robert saying to Barrow that Carson is kind is a big fat lie. Even Mary and Robert are kinder than friggin Carson. And Carson was bullying Barrow in this season for sure. What Robert should have said is that Carson isn't intentionally malicious.

@@taroman7100 bringing her up would’ve meant she had to reveal her past at the house, which meant revealing that not only were these noble blue-bloods dining with a commoner, but that her wealthy husband had married well outside of and beneath his class, one of the most shameful things a wealthy member of society could do in those days. She wasn’t keeping it a secret to be nasty, only to keep up the image that she was one of them. She didn’t know they would react kindly to the fact that she was of lower class background instead of a well-bred socialite like bratty Mary and Edith

Everyone blames Thomas for exposing Gwen here. I disagree. I would have done the same: can’t stand when people act as if they forgot their past or as if they’re too good to speak to former colleagues. There’s no way she would have mentioned it if Thomas hadn’t forced her to, she was enjoying her lunch with the aristocracy too much to risk ruining it by telling her former employers about her identity. Thomas is a cynical and cruel person, I know (that’s why I love him), but he spots people’s hypocrisy and rubs it in their faces. She deserved the humiliation when Lady Mary, clearly on Thomas’s side, said « You had every opportunity to tell us ».

These people were high upper class, ranking nobility. I can’t imagine how nerve-wracking it must’ve been for her to be sitting at that table, knowing they didn’t know who she was because they don’t bother to remember the names and faces of the people they force to do everything for them, and it’s likely she didn’t know how they’d react to dining with a former housemaid, someone so low and common that she used to only be good for serving them

And don't forget, this is pre-World War II England. This were progressing, but the class structure, the idea of royalty, aristocracy, landed gentry, and servants all having their place and having it God-ordained was ingrained in these people. So for someone like Gwen who was a servant and breaking bread with her "betters", it was quite unprecedented during those times and there's a reason why had no idea how to act, and she was most likely frightened. The only thing I can think to compare it to would by the Indian caste system (which the British exploited to their benefit) or even the southern slavery system in the U.S. That's why both the titled land owners and the servants themselves (who had to buy into the system to keep it going and bought into the top-down given respectability and dignity of being a servant) were distrustful and hateful of the socially mobile, the wage workers in various industries, and the small business owners who seemed to throw a wrench into the whole thing, especially the latter group who helped upend this system as they became the bourgeoisie or the nouveau riche and had more actual money than these land-rich titled gentlemen, and used that money to start having more influence and power.

I don't think it went over Mary's head tbh. I interpreted her words at the end to be a sort of "take that!" Cuz even Mary the snob realized it backfired on her and Barrow: both she and Thomas were rude to Gwen, but once Gwen mentioned Sybil, even Mary was appreciative of Gwen's story.
