Hmmm. I am a little skeptical. To me, it feels very much like Sisyphus is consistently trying to pathologize Vaush's whole identity and approach. The defense against this framing is to be casual and chill, and Vaush is doing it: I don't think it's bad on the whole, but I didn't appoint Sisyphus to be Vaush's shrink XD I feel like there was a danger to letting him frame Vaush as a deeply pathological person and HIM as the normal interlocutor. However, it really didn't work out that way, intended or not.

One of my only gripes with Vaush was that he put too much effort in leftie infighting BS and could sense the bitterness from him (whether or not he was more righteous than those criticising him), so it's kinda cool to see him acknowledge this on some level and feels like he is making an effort to strive to channel his energy into more productive things.
@Chinesetakeout382
@Chinesetakeout382 Жыл бұрын
That’s definitely a flaw he has, I think all the years of the left making bad faith arguments against him leads him to not really think critically about initial criticism of him. Which roughly 90% percent of the time, he’s right, but in those times where either the criticism was valid or it wasn’t even that critical of him makes him look pretty bad.

There's definitely been a split in the lefty youtube space the past few years. Yeah, it's a great message...Too bad his video was sh1t and no one got that idea from watching it. I really hope he takes the message away that he needs to stop putting out content like that. I'm pretty cynical because he acknowledges that he choose to give it a clickbait title, and showing pictures of streamers that he had to know would generate react drama. That poisons the well and makes him look like a grifter.
@JebeckyGranjola
@JebeckyGranjola Жыл бұрын
@joshridinger3407 Not necessarily. There's a lot that can be done in local politics. I understand that as a content creator that's hard to do because you can focus on stuff in your own area, but that's going to be irrelevant to 99% of you audience. In general, I really think mutual aid is the best political action you can do. You can directly materially improve people's lives and expand your network. What can be better than that? But for some reason Vaush seems indifferent or even hostile to that. I was really dismayed in a video where he debated some dipsh1t Anti-Biden Lefty- And Vaush was right about that, but then he harshly attacked community gardening as equally pathetic and politically ineffectual as protest voting. You can vote for Biden AND help out the people living in your nearby food desert. Don't just vote for Biden and wait for him to take care of it. What kind of practical advice is this?
@shawnhenderson2091
@shawnhenderson2091 Жыл бұрын
@@JebeckyGranjola Vaush isn't a genius, however much he claims he is, he's got a ton of things right and some things wrong, for one he acts like the idea of foundational change from the top down and community activism and outreach are mutually exclusive ideas. They're not. Vaush is right that we need to clamp down on corruption at the top, that things like the lion's share of pollution come from a small grouping of corporations are worth addressing over the often cynical ploys of telling everyone to do their part, it is understandable that Vaush sees that and feels cynical about it. But at the same time, it doesn't actually take away from the efficacy of engaging in local politics and establishing community ties that help us get through the messes these elitists create. Do both Vaush. Both. Be like Beau in terms of community ties and be like Vaush in terms of harshly criticizing the elite class for its responsibility in fucking over everyone of us below them on the wealth food chain.

As someone who was highly critical of the original response video, this was refreshing to see. Bridge building is essential in this current political climate. I will nitpick though, I think there are enough meaningful differences between online and IRL activism that the distinction is warranted. The goals are (sometimes) different, the audiences are different, the barriers to entry are different, and generally behavior is different.

Props for that.
@jakob8884
@jakob8884 Жыл бұрын
Vidcon arguably de-Othered Vaush’’s image to some extent. I think that played a role here. I don’t think it’s a complete coincidence that Sisyphus’s willingness to “step back and reevaluate” this particular issue came after vidcon. After having first meekly reflected himself into the lowest and cheapest of tricks for getting more attention and to in-group virtue signal as a (also good) leftist KZbin video essayist: punching down on what has long been the most punched figure within the online left, basically the Other in that space: Vaush. I think it’s a good thing that Sisyphus reevaluates but he seems to me to be a little less than super courageous and even a bit calculating in what he allows himself to reevaluate, and when. It will be interesting to see if and which others might follow.. I am not thereby saying anything about the quality or value of this conversation.

I think it’s important to critique right wing online personalities (even if it becomes an echo chamber) primarily because it provides people a pipeline to move towards left ideologies and spreads much needed truth about the other side. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen chatters or callers on progressive channels who said they were waist deep in conservative propaganda until they watched a lefty video exposing their favorite online personality, and their entire ideology shifted. At the end of the day it’s all a battle of ideas and this is the biggest space it plays out. Conversations and social networks form here which turn into kitchen table conversations about real issues which turn into votes. It would be helpful to have a single large discord channel with an abundance of resources on organizations and events people can get involved with, canvassing info, places to donate, representatives from those organizations to chat with people and help direct them to productive action or donation, and just a community of supportive volunteers with the purpose of putting boots on the ground in as many ways as possible. You could have rooms for different states so people could hook up with communities local to them, share local political news. To maximize effectiveness this discord would need to be simultaneously promoted by every major left wing channel in the space during election season. It would need to be hyped. Part of the reason for political apathy in online spaces is (perceived) apathy from content creators or a lack of general information and direction. If people really feel like there’s a sense of excitement, positivity, and energy behind a call to action, and that they can actually make a difference.. they will mobilize. We can change the world and beat back the fascists if we’re willing to come together and fight. Take back the state legislatures. Take back the house. Take back our reproductive rights. Rebalance the judicial system. Repeal book bans. Let’s GO

Progressive Victory does have some of the stuff you are talking about. There are channels in the server for every state, at least. I think they have a good shot of becoming this type of system that you're talking about, though it is currently not large enough.
@Eagleman552
@Eagleman552 Жыл бұрын
@@TheBlueWizzrobe I figured they did, but yeah I just meant something really big that could be hyped by every progressive content creator! A collaborative project that everyone feels like they can be a part of so it’s easier to spread around and share. I think it would be huge and exciting and would really inject some energy into the space. I know that’s idealistic and probably wouldn’t happen but I really feel like if we all just worked together we could build a huge apparatus to drive people to action. I want to see an online grassroots effort unlike anything we’ve ever done before! Like, everyone has a discord but I never hear anything mentioned about what we can do or where we can go specifically to get involved. And when people are directed somewhere specific as part of a community I think it’s easier to motivate them. It can feel kind of daunting when you’re on you’re own and you’re just one person like what can I do to change things ya know? I hadn’t even heard of Progressive Victory until they did the panel. I’m glad they’re doing events like that though and I hope they continue to expand. Honestly when I wrote that comment I was half hoping one of them would see some of the ideas and be like hmmm ;) But also I want it to be not just a place that exists but a place that is talked about and promoted everywhere to drive people to engage! And not just an information space but a bustling hub of activity that also serves to organize large in person events! And more coordinated online campaigns, like online rallies that utilize video games to draw awareness. Like for example a huge number of people join a Minecraft server and build some insane collaborative structure that makes a statement while having a broadcasted discussion about political action. I’d like to see more of the gaming space involved because I think that does a great job of drawing people in.

I've seen quite a few of your debates and had sooooo many moments where I just felt you really stopped listening very quickly, because you wanted to attack what was being said straight away. I think you tend to see the extremes and jump to conclusions. There's so much common ground with other people to be had. First establish common ground, then argue about important details and contradictions. I continue to see this gross attitude in online leftist spaces of this snarky elitist ignorance and it annoying as hell. vaush's chat instantly resorting to either ignoring the guest or attacking him the moment he says absolutely anything (even if he agrees with vaush).

You must understand the importance of framing when addressing politics on Vaush's level. If you were engaging with Ben Shapiro, a pretty smart and media-trained guy, he would be working extremely hard to make it seem like he agrees and you're the unreasonable one. Sisyphus has been exposed to a lot of this, so you can't simply take his being amiable at face value: you have to figure out what he's driving at and how hard he's trying to get to that position. A debate is meant to be contention, and contention is okay. How we approach that contention, can be very revealing. I think Sisyphus came off OK.

about the pamphleteer guys. where i live its very common to see them giving those out in front of highschools and universities, and honestly? they are annoying as fuck. no shade to those people, really, someone's gotta do that work, but the guys i met were all really pushy and kinda intrusive- and all the people i ever saw interacting with them pamphleteer guys were pissed off because they were on a hurry to get to class and they were just in the way... All of this fucking sucks cuz you cant really push people to the left if they fucking avoid you and run the moment they spot you...

I commented on the original video that vaush was being extremely vitriolic and bad faith because it was presented as an antidebate bro video and people didnt really respond positively. Happy to see that vaush admitted to it at least in their emails and had a positive interaction with the content creator. Just wish that the energy of this engagement was there from the beginning. Their video had valid criticism and interesting points could be made through it but all that was kinda highjacked from all the antagonism

Such a nice convo. Vaush original react was defenetly too mean. Also antagonism doesn't realy sway peoples opinions, it is only usefull for solidifying the opinions of ones own side so I feel like when engageing with people on our side the default should be a calm and calculated use of the socratic method.
