Delaware is pretty important with all those companies incorporated there. Wyoming and Montana has the things that make big booms. Connecticut has a large sub base and insurance corporations. Maryland has a lot of defense industries along with government offices. Hawaii is strategic for our navy, tourism, and sugar. Alaska is great for defense, natural resources and a great stop for cargo airplanes. Louisiana is great for Oil, and is a key state in shipping and transportation because of the Mississippi River. Can't forget Vermont because of the Maple Syrup and Autumn Leaves. We also cant forget about NJ with its manufacturing, links to New England amd New York, the ports and proximity between two of America's largest cities.

@Sly88Frye16 күн бұрын
It really sucks how California just isn't really a feasible place to live for a lot of people because it's just so damn expensive. I love living here. Santa Rosa I have lived in my whole life and I've occasionally moved to neighboring towns here in Sonoma County. I don't want to leave here, but it's getting frustrating how it just keeps getting more expensive. I'm managing but I'm still scared of that chance that I'll end up being priced out anyways. I luckily landed what is called an affordable apartment which is actually considered different than low income apartments. I wish I was in a low income apartment because then the rent would be significantly lower but ultimately the rent is most definitely lower than the average for my area.

Despite its *recent* problems with drugs, homelessness and wokeness, California literally represents 50% of human civilisation. Science, technology, Computers, The Internet, Silicon Valley, the Hollywood, Star Trek, Music, Art, Culture... never ending list. There are suburbs in California with more accomplished people than entire countries. As a non-American, Thank You California, for your contribution to human race. Of course, it was going to be Number 1 on the list. Well done, Briggs!

Star Trek??
@you_dont_know_me_sir20 күн бұрын
@@Cam-vz2zk Yes. Star Trek has inspired millions of scientists and engineers around the world. As they say, one of the common thing amongst all smart people is that they watch Star Trek. If you have seen the show, you will notice that a lot of real world technology is inspired by it. Star Trek represents a desire to achieve the best of humanity scientifically, socially, artistically and philosophically. It is much more than just another TV show. So I would submit that it qualifies for its own place in the list.

I started my career in in Silicon Valley and I've been retired now for a couple of years. I wouldn't give up those years that I worked here. I really enjoyed my job. Luckily I didn't have to drive that far to get to my first job. When I used my motorcycle it was less than a 15 minute drive. I've continued living here because it makes a great starting location for traveling around the Western Region of the US.

When I moved to Atlanta, Georgia, I had to use the services of an Apartment Locator because I couldn't see lot of the Apartments from the Street there were so many trees. It saved me a whole lot of time finding places. I love the trees, and can't imagine now living without so many. It would hurt but the country could live without Texas but we could not be without its poorer neighbor Louisiana for the port of New Orleans alone. The navigational choke point is why Louisiana is indispensable as is Michigan which should be higher. I would probably drop Florida from the list and drop Texas down to 7th or 8th.

Did you say Austin was a "desert oasis"? It may not have the towering pines of Oregon (or even of East Texas) but the TX Hill Country, which is just west of Austin, is most certainly no desert. Austin also has the Colorado River running through it. Yes, TX has desert but that is much further west.
@you_dont_know_me_sir22 күн бұрын
Austin, TX gets 921mm rain per year, which is almost comparable to Portland, OR, which gets 938mm and Seattle, WA, which gets 999mm. Portland and Seattle have a reputation for rain but Austin does not, despite getting comparable rainfall. This may be because Austin's soil is limestone, at least the Western parts of Austin, so it absorbs water very quickly. That is why trees in Austin area may appear more like water starved shrubs, which are typical of dry climate. I also noticed that Austin does not have well-kept, manicured gardens and parks, like Denver, CO does. Austin gives rugged and dry vibes, despite getting substantial rainfall. Perhaps that is what Briggs meant.

@@you_dont_know_me_sirWell Austin is much hotter which means more evaporation. Also rain in Austin is far heavier than Seattle and Portland meaning a lot less rainy days

It's always interesting to see why these rankings are done. If you look at geopolitical factors, the reason why the US is so strong is due to it's access to both the Atlantic and the Pacific and secondly because of our rivers, like the Mississippi, the Columbia, and the Hudson that give access to the interior. Pick the states with these gateways, and you have the true "can't live withouts".
