Now, combine that with the considerable wealth of the grandson of master potioneer Fleamont Potter( I'd like to point out here that the mentions of a "small fortune left behind by his parents" are essentially incorrect for 2 reasons- 1. I am pretty sure the fortune was left by Fleamont Potter, Harry's grandfather, a master potioneer who invented a very popular cosmetic potion and not James and Lily Potter. 2. As you might have guessed already, the fortune left by the inventor of a cosmetic potion would be, in no sense, a 'small' fortune), and we might just have another competitor for the title

Sirius was the last male Black and his family left him with great wealth; once he died, all he had was given to Harry; and we know through the Potter side, Harry was already a very wealthy. I’m betting with as much gold Harry had before adding Sirius’s gold, was equivalent to a few million dollars; and the Black family fortune through Sirius’s line probably increased it triple fold, at minimum I’m betting. I wonder, with Bellatrix and Rodolfus dead, who came into all that money.. I guess the Malfoys (Draco being their nephew)? Or is there any other lestrange branch to have precedent? Or, maybe, the money would go to house of black, the closest patrilineal relatives... Hence becoming Harry's. Also, I think the Malfoys are definitely richer than the Lestranges at the start, not only older money, but greater possessions makes me think that if we had a sneak peak of their volts those would be much ritcher than those we get to know. For all the pompousness of the Malfoys, I think it really is rooted in greater welth: they are all very cunning and I'd wager good planners (judging by the diary debacle), the only mistake was to get involved with Voldemort, not realizing the true monster that he was. So good money, good planing and muggle enterprises would make them the ritcher in wizarding Britain, whereas the Lestranges and Blacks, being more prone to madness and obsessed with "blood purity" would not be so stable and successful business people. Now Flamel, while having the capability to definitely be the richest, doesn't seem to me to have had the inclination... No one needs to have that much money, and he seems to be in it for the intelectual and scientific pursuits, rather than the material ones. In the Philosopher's stone, we learn that he'd rather end the "artificial extension" of his life (eventually) than allow Voldemort to get his hands on the stone. Thus proving to be a selfless and good person. So I think he would only take advantage of the stone to make enough gold to live comfortably, help some people and/or causes when need be, and not stand out as a rich person, preferring to live in peace with is wife and his research. So I'd give the 'richest' title to the Malfoys, know to have mostly only sons, good investors, and veeery old money, at least within the wizarding people we know about.
@toddlower55463 жыл бұрын
Who got the money? Don't forget the government. Bet the ministry tried to grab it. :-)
@miranda2421r3 жыл бұрын
Logically speaking, the money couldn't possibly go from the Lestranges to the Blacks after the death of Bellatrix and Rodolphus. The Black family had died out with the death of Sirius. From a legal perspective, Harry is nothing to Bellatrix. In fact, I suspect that Bellatrix knew that if Sirius were to die, pretty much all of his wealth would come to her, Narcissa and to Andromeda. Except that Sirius was smart enough to compose a will, leaving (next to) nothing for his actual family and instead leaving it all to Harry, his godson (again, there was no legal connection between them). Now to answer the question you raised on who would inherit from Rodolphus and Bellatrix, it largely depends on the laws in the wizarding world (of Great Britain). I’m only familiar with the Dutch laws and that is only a little bit, but I presume they are fairly similar in the basis. If I remember correctly, Bellatrix died later in the battle than Rodolphus. Normally, this would mean the money would be Bellatrix’ property upon the time of her death (unless they had other official arrangements in their wills and/or marriage). Thus the money of the Lestranges would predominantly go to her closest living relatives (Narcissa and Andromeda), and perhaps some to any living Lestranges (I don’t know much about their family), and basically all of it would be divided in tiers of closeness of the living relatives to Bellatrix. A very simple example of how this could work: Narcissa would inherit 10k from Bellatrix, which would either be shared or not with Lucius depending on their marital arrangements, and Draco would inherit 1k. But say Narcissa and Lucius wouldn’t use any of it before they died, then Draco would inherit everything from them at that instance they both have passed away. Then again, it might be a bit different in this case, depending on how their wills were structured, their marital arrangements, if there were sufficient witnesses to establish who died first in the battle (if it mattered at all), whether or not people declined the inheritance and the chance of family members disputing the inheritance. With regard to your comment about the wealth of the Malfoys being larger than the Lestranges, I fear it is almost impossible to say. We must remember that the Lestrange family is possibly much larger than we know and that there are potentially many more details to it than we have learned from the original Harry Potter series. For example, we don’t know if Rodolphus and Bellatrix had a manor, much like the Malfoys, but couldn’t use it as the ministry would certainly keep an eye on it as they had both been sent to Azkaban and had broken out (making them some of the most dangerous searched fugitives). And as the Fantastic Beasts franchise demonstrates, the Lestrange family is so much more international and large than we originally knew. We also don’t know for certain if there are more family members hidden from our perspective still and whether or not they were successful in managing/expanding their wealth.

@@miranda2421r knowing a little about UK laws of inheritance, it seems it would be hard for any female family member to receive anything from a male family member, for a long time things were usually passed down from male to male only, this is mostly true for the 19th century but the wizarding world in GB is notoriously stuck in the past in some places. At the time Narcissa and Bellatrix would marry into the Malfoys and Lestranges all their Black money would "dissapear" and the rightful owners of that money would be Lucius and Rodolfus then when these men died, it would all go to their eldest son or male relative (Draco for Lucius and any living male relative of Rodolfus) even if Bellatrix and Narcissa were still alive at the time of their husbands death (only if laws are stuck in the past of course). All Black money these two women may have would have been in the shape of a dowry, a medium sized small fortune put in place by their male relatives to attract good husband's (basically "if you marry this woman you'll get X amount of money from her male relatives/father"), and I'm inclined to think this is still a thing even in the 90s because of the attitude all these pureblood families have like their minds are stuck in the 1800s. So all the Black money that in the 21th Muggle century would have been given to the Black sisters (Andromeda had been disowned by her family anyway, that probably saved them a dowry though) in the world of these highborn stuck-in-the-past families would likely had gone all to their only living male relative on the Black line, Sirius Black. If he had died without a will the line would have to be traced very far back to find another male heir, but because he had a will it goes all to Harry Potter (or it would all be taken by the government, but knowing how important family trees were for the Blacks it makes sense it would be easy(er) to find someone at last).

The copies disappear soon afterwards and if they remained that would plummet the value of gold due to supply and demand. Take in real life you created a super special valuable object of some kind, you start with just 1 that perhaps can be sold for $1000, then suddenly you figure out how to make 1000 of those objects (for example but almost any number would do) you do so and the value drops to $1 or something like that. You have more supply maybe less demand and part of the value is rarity when something is rare it is vastly more valuable but when you have many more of that thing it's value decreases.

I understand there would be a wealth gap in the Wizarding World similar to our own, but when you consider all the things magic practitioners can do, there really shouldn't be any truly poor wizards. I mean when you have a spell that turns animals into water goblets which second year students learn, couldn't the Weasleys just capture some wild animals in the forest and turn them into water goblets and sell them to some unsuspecting muggle? In fact anyone who is enough at transfiguration could just use magic to turn low valued objects into high valued ones and sell them off. I suppose Arthur and Molly weren't the most savvy couple but when you consider all the advantages of using magic, they honestly shouldn't be as poor as they appear.

If half the Black family wealth went with Bellatrix when she married into the Lestranges, then half would've gone with Narcissa when she married into the Malfoys. But it didn't, because neither of them were from the direct line. Sirius and Regulus were, and Sirius clearly inherited everything from his mother (his father being the previous heir to the direct line). Which actually doesn't make much sense, as Narcissa was the only remaining member of the Black family that was not disowned (Sirius, Andromeda) or imprisoned (Bellatrix, Sirius) when Walburga Black died. It must be assumed that Walburga re-inherited him, falsely assuming he did betray the Potters and killed 12 Muggles. There's no evidence that a) the Lestranges are wealthier than the Malfoys or b) that any of the Black family wealth went to the Lestranges. Sirius clearly had everything from the Black family, which was certainly more than the Potters (Harry mentions the Firebolt would probably bankrupt him, but Sirius bought it and had plenty of money to leave to Harry when he died). I'd say based on the evidence, we can't conclude who was wealthier, the Lestranges or the Malfoys, but only because we don't have any examples of the Lestrange's other assets, only what they have in their vault. And the Malfoys are heavily invested in land, valuables outside their vault, and businesses. Flamel is obviously the wealthiest though, he can transmute any mineral into gold whenever he wants. I don't think anyone ever disputed that.

I don't really understand the philosopher's stone itself and how you turn any metal into gold. Is there an Elixir of Life INSIDE the stone? Is there a lid on the stone so you can open it and drink it? Do you have to refill the stone with Elixir of Life? If so, what is the point of having the stone, can't you just pour the potion into a goblet and drink it? How exactly do you turn any metal into gold? Do you pour the elixir inside the stone on the metal? Owing to its small size, wouldn't the small amount of liquid inside the stone only turn small amounts of metal into gold at a time?

I'm not convinced the Lestranges were wealthier than the Malfoys. You mention the fact that Bellatrix, a Black, married into the Lestrange family and thus combined their wealth but Narcissa was also a Black and would have combined some of their wealth with the Malfoys. The Lestrange vault was obviously full of wealth but we never got a description of the Malfoy vault so we can't really compare them. So it's hard to say for sure which family was wealthier, but I suspect the Malfoys. I think you're probably right that Flamel was the wealthiest but he's also dead, so his wealth would have been dispersed.
@markkuilomaki11732 жыл бұрын

While I'm sure Nicholas Flamel was wise and modest in his old age, I think it's fair to say that his wisdom can probably largely be attributed to said old age. By the way, it's not a horrifying statistic that wealth is not evenly distributed. It's literally the Pareto distribution. The same thing happens with *nearly* random selections like paper clips pulled at random from a container and joined successively. There is nothing horrifying about that either. It's simply a behavior of a single functional filter. It happens in everything that has high iterations and a functional filter. Every single time.
