Fun fact: before getting into acting, Jack Nicholson worked as a fireman, either part time or full time idk. But they originally used a stunt door for this scene and they had to switch to a real door because he chopped the stunt one too easily. Basically the man actually knew how to break a door down. That’s my fact, hope you enjoyed.

The shining (of course), Batman begins, Armageddon, The last temptation of Christ, basic instinct and more. It is quite common for performances, movies and even directors to grow on people, and get better/worse over the years. Honestly, before people call her "overly dramatic" you have the think about what you'd do in that situation. I mean seriously, I wouldn't be worried about how perfect my scream was, I'd trying to make as kuch noise as humanly possible to alert somebody else who could help me or make my husband try to stop. This felt so real, she felt terrified.

The reason why it was so real, is because she wasn't told about this part. She legit got terrified. No one told her about this part and since this movie, she said she suffered PTSD for a while because of it. She thought she was actually going to get hurt, as if Jack was going to hurt her for real. I think when she was saying "JACK!" she wasn't saying the character. She was calling for Nicholson to stop.

The way Shelley screams as Jack axes the door is so chilling and realistic. I could feel her character’s terror and fear. Kubrick told the whole staff to treat Shelly like trash. He wanted her as defeated mentally and physically as possible for this role. Imagine showing up to work and just being treated like garbage. Shelley Duvall's acting was amazing here, and in my opinion totally spot on. Every swing Jack took was a declaration of his willingness to kill his family. Every time the axe met the door, Jack could have stopped. Everytime Shelley screamed for help, Jack could have walked away. Imagine being cornered into a small bathroom in a snowed-in hotel in the middle of nowhere, and the only thing you can hear is the snowstorm outside and the loud CRUNCH of an axe breaking down the only barrier between you and your crazed husband. THAT is terror.
@Lefeurouge

She didn’t know Jack was a fireman irl and they told her they were gonna use a prop axe and door, when they started the scene she saw the real blade of an ace burst through the door and thought Kubrick was going to murder her for the perfect shot, so her face was pure terror thinking she was going to die, she believed it after all she went through in filming; yelling for Jack(Jack Nicholson not the character) to stop. Thats why her acting here is phenomenal.

Jack Nicholson is great at playing disturbed, psychotic, and mentally unstable characters, as well as other comedic and serious roles over a 60 year career! It's unfortunate that he has officially retired from acting as of recently! He has been one of my favourite older actors for many years (along with Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Clint Eastwood)- I wish him the best in retirement!
