The reason why it was so real, is because she wasn't told about this part. She legit got terrified. No one told her about this part and since this movie, she said she suffered PTSD for a while because of it. She thought she was actually going to get hurt, as if Jack was going to hurt her for real. Shelley Duvall's acting was amazing here, and in my opinion totally spot on. Every swing Jack took was a declaration of his willingness to kill his family. Every time the axe met the door, Jack could have stopped. Everytime Shelley screamed for help, Jack could have walked away. Imagine being cornered into a small bathroom in a snowed-in hotel in the middle of nowhere, and the only thing you can hear is the snowstorm outside and the loud CRUNCH of an axe breaking down the only barrier between you and your crazed husband. THAT is terror.

She didn’t know Jack was a fireman irl and they told her they were gonna use a prop axe and door, when they started the scene she saw the real blade of an ace burst through the door and thought Kubrick was going to murder her for the perfect shot, so her face was pure terror thinking she was going to die, she believed it after all she went through in filming; yelling for Jack(Jack Nicholson not the character) to stop. All those "fun facts" probably weren't fun for Shelley when she was living through it. But you can't help but admire her toughness. Many other actors would've broken down and even walked off the set and quit, if they had to deal with what Kubrick was putting her through.

They have gotten annoying. People who state them seem to be in heat and thirsty for likes.

I'm gonna kill Kubrick... That's actual torture. (I also feel bad for Nicholson, because while he was rehearsing, he was forced to eat the one thing he hated for two weeks straight: Cheese sandwiches.

I'm glad Shelley's doing so much better, now and she's happily living out her retired life. She deserves it after all her hard work for 3 decades
