@CanisMalus The production of The Hobbit movies was an absolute shitshow behind the scenes. Peter Jackson wasn't even supposed to direct, Guillermo del Toro was the original director/writer but he left after WB (who had in the meantime bought New Line Cinema) started their usual fuckery. WB then basically coerced Jackson to make 3 movies, instead of the 2 which were planned, but without giving him more time for the production! They also did their usual studio interference and didn't paid the production crew their salary, which caused a strike mid-production. Peter Jackson has stated since, that he regrets making these movies and that their production was the worst experience he had as a filmmaker.

Tolkien is still the father. It's about the level of influence and impact. Every significant person ever was inspired or influenced in some way by someone else, for better or worse. But Tolkien by FAR had the biggest influence on modern fantasy. I didn't know about Tolkien till the Jackson series. Maybe a lot tried to replicate the formula because of it's financial succes or for other reasons... Popularity is not an argument for influence. Squid Game is very popular, but is heavenly influence by Kaiji, who a lot of people don't even heard of.

I love that they can’t even tolerate conflict: Isildur and his friends make up, Isildur and his dad make up, Galadriel and the Queen come to an agreement, Galadriel and Halbrand wind up on the same boat, Durin doesn’t mind Elrond basically giving away his secret, Elrond has no problem with Gil-Galad’s plot, the Harfoots move on from Nori taking in a stranger, there are no motherly consequences to Theo’s previous adventure coz his mother is too busy being strong and independent to even recognize his existence etc

Yeah. There sre those resolutions I don't mind at all. Like Durin helping Elrond. I even like that. They are supposed to be genuine friends, so elrond's entire race potentially dying should upset Durin. I liked this conclusion, though it was a bit anticlimactic. Even when Elrond wqs standing in the forest contemplating his options, I thought, just ask Durin and if he's really your friend he's going to agree. I didn't think they'd do it outright, instead of milking this for some drama. But I gotta admit I prefer it that way. Isildur...frankly I don't care about. From the way he's written it's obvious he's going to be important in the long run. It also seems like if I were a LotR superfan (beyond just watchint the trilogy) I would probably know a lot more abt him. But I don't and they did a terrible job of setting this character up for fans who don't already know him or his father. And as for his friends, they only seem relevant in regards to their relationship with him. So I vouldn't care less, and the less time we spend on it the better. As for the harfoots, I don't mind it that much, cause it makes sense, (and with Nori burning her hand, it doesn't seem fully resolved yet either.) But then there are those resolutions that seem utterly ridiculous, because they make no sense to me, but seem siper relevant for the story. The conflict with the chancellor was teased but never even came to anything. Galadriel and the Queen, and Galadriel and Halbrand infuriate me, cause they make no sense to me.

I'm not sure if we can know that he is younger. He is the son of Curufin and was born during the Years of the Trees. He could very well be the same age as Galadriel, since Galadriel is the daughter of Finarfin, Finwe's last son. That being said, his portrayal in the show is pretty bad. The elves in total are cringe.

You should really add another incredibly pertinent original trilogy interview to your intro. I was recently watching the Two Towers extras and stumbled on the “From Book to Script” segment where they talk about how they realized they didn’t need to make Arwen fight. Liv Tyler specifically says, “I went right back into the book and into the appendix and what we came to realize was that you don’t have to put a sword in her hands to make her strong. And where we’ve come to now is all these true elements of who Arwen is. I mean this is an incredibly powerful and fearless woman filled with so much hope and belief, and that is strong enough.”

I figured it out. The showrunners had their own fantasy series in mind but Amazon bean-counters shot it down as they felt the Tolkien brand would bring in more viewers and investors. So they have been forcing their generic fantasy story elements into Tolkien which is why there is much lore deviations while characters are re-purposed from the original story to become pale shadows of Tolkien's characters. Even with the rights' restrictions, they easily could have made a better story more faithful to the lore focusing on the main points - creation of Rings, deception of Sauron, fall of Numenor, and the Last Alliance - and fill in the gaps with plots and characters that support these core elements rather than completely distract and break the lore.

If according to them, Numenor was isolationist and Guyladriel came and convinced the Queen to go to Middle Earth... She should be blamed for their fall. If Sauron changed into Hallbrand and wanted to actually turn towards good... It's Guyladriel who brings him back to Middle Earth. She's again responsible for the calamity that Sauron's rule was. If Amazon went back long enough while creating their series, I bet they would make her responsible for Feanor's misdeeds, and possibly for Melkor's evil deeds. Real Tolkien's Galadriel is weeping locked up somewhere, watching this abomination that took her place.

The inspiring speeches is still there, but instead of inspiring hope and camradarie there is a more important message to be told. Having women in the ranks of battle completely destroys Eowyn's arc in LOTR. I think the writers missed that which shows their quality. It means that the Witch King would be aware of women fighting and would be invincible to "men" in the humanity sense and Eowyn's wounding would not be fatal. Not being sexist, in fact quite opposite. It was one Tolkien's most positive underlying themes, where great power comes from unexpected places. That is why Eowyn won against him, it was unexpected for her to be there in the ranks. Thus, Eowyn was powerful.

Some one I know loves this show. She hated PJ's Lord of the Rings because it deviated too much from the source material, but she is ok with this. I pointed out the changes to Galadriels personality and history. She said "Whats wrong with her being a warrior?" I answered What's wrong with how Tolkien wrote her? At the 42:00 mark, when AZ talks about Galadriel getting into a victimhood contest with everyone she argues with, I think AZ and Gary missed out on an important point. Victimhood is the new hero's journey for modern storytellers, and it's an abominable development. Right now, I can envision the show writers and critical defenders saying that she's not a Mary Sue because there were references to all the bad things she experienced and saw! Because they throw in a little exposition with some cut scenes, then some sophomoric you-don't-know-me dialogue and *boom* there's your hero's journey. They don't struggle with themselves, only with the wrongs that have been done to them. Hercules was driven mad, murdered his family and his grief was so immense that it fueled him as he competed 12 impossible tasks. He had to delve into the underworld before he could be redeemed. That's the kind of hero's journey that ancient men and women were treated to in their stories. Modern heroes are utter weak shit.

My dad has always been a crazed Tolkien fan, so I immediately took his reaction to this show as dramatic. Then I saw the scene where Galadrial gets let out of her prison cell The cell opens up, and in attempt to be intimidating, she Awkwardly steps out of the cage towards them, and the Elven guard pretty much gives her his arm so she can spin around it with her 5'3 frame (Galadriel was around 6'4 btw). They knew this fight scene was going to look so bad THE CAMERA PANS AWAY SO THAT YOU CAN ONLY HEAR HER BEATING THEM UP. When they pan back she is locking up all FOUR ELITE ELVEN GUARDS in the cell. My question to that was, "How did they get her in the cell in the first place?"

I remember the swordplay in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. I remember wanting to research the women from that film ‘cause they did such an amazing job with the physicalities of their roles, and how well they pulled off their fight scenes. I wanted to know if they were martial artists first and then got into acting, or if they were actors who had just gotten some really good training. (Wondered the same thing about Gina Carano after seeing Haywire a long time ago.) Setting aside the bastardization of Galadriel’s character, if they wanted to make her a warrior woman, they should have cast someone who had a modicum of aptitude. Maybe the choreographers are low-tier as well. Hard to know if they’re dumbing it down to accommodate the lack of talent, or if it’s just a happy marriage of, “she can’t fight, and we can’t choreograph”. I’m sure there are folks out there (not me) who would forgive the ideology, the ‘writing’, the ‘acting’, the ‘characters’ and the ‘plot’ if the action sequences were stellar. But clearly no effort was made to display any scrap of believability-let alone proficiency-in the combat scenes. Further proof that the rot is deep, the delusions concrete, and the destruction imminent.

The Numenorians were good friends with the elves for centuries, were visited by them regularly, and have their own master smiths that were tutored in days past by them. They probably had some lying around somewhere or maybe even crafted it for her. They're giving her an army and a fleet, why not a set of armor? But to be honest, the writers probably just forgot about it. Like most things in this show, when a thing needs to happen, it just happens whether or not it makes sense or runs counter to something that was established before. Just....terrible...writing.

Even the subtitles show how bad the writing is "our legs are short but the way is long". The harfoots would not see themselves as short. In their eyes, they are normal sized. To US they are short. But the writer is so incapable of understanding how the character would view their own world they can only see them from their own perspective and in their head "hobbits are short". It reminds me of the Life is Strange sequel where the lead girl with a sj haircut's superpower is empathy. The sjw's have become so detached from how everyone thinks but themselves that they consider empathy a superpower.
