Simon missed several awesome Russian facts. After Peter the great modernized russia, he spent years living in Europe travelling and working blue collar jobs, with nobody in Europe or Russia knowing any better. Catherine the great wasnt necessarily a Romanov... One of the greatest Russian leaders married into the Romanov family. One of the Romanovs just left the throne, and disappeared, with rumors of having lived in a monastery in another country. I don't know why Simon says the title changed. The leader of the empire was always called the Tsar. Maybe the official title changed, but down to Nick 2, he was called the Tsar.

Thank you for this Simon! This a great video, considering current events. I have been trying to (quickly) learn more about Russian and Ukrainian historically significant and meaningful events, as I have recently been discovering my family's Ukranian heritage. The history, of both of these countries, are closely tied together, so it is hard to discuss one country without discussing the other. On top of that, the boundaries of the area in Ukraine that my ancestors were from, have changed so many times since 1900. I would enjoy a video from you, about the history of Ukraine that includes how the borders have changed over the centuries, and the impact that Ukraine has had to the world due to it's history, culture, and exports. I always enjoy watching and listening to your various channels- thanks again, Simon!

I have the broach with the paste replacements of the jewels.... I remember my grandmother, she was mad about something my dad said and told him: "we are not peasants, we are the elite"!! As a child I did not understand, but my mom explained that grandma just missed her old life...

The reason the guards at Ipatiev used their gun butts and bayonettes is because of those jewels they had sewn into their clothes. The guards had been instructed to shoot in the hearts, with a bullet in the head afterwards to make sure. But those diamonds essentially acted like a bulletproof vest. Given the intense stress and excitement of the moment, the guards panicked and began physically attacking the tsar and his family.
@p.strobus7569

The guards were also drunk as hell and there are at least some reports that at least one of their intended victims survived long enough to make it onto the ‘drag ‘em away’ plank before moaning and getting bayonetted again.

Hey Simon, please, please, please do a Casual Criminalist video on James Mitchell "Mike" DeBardeleben. The other day you mentioned that the Secret Service in the US is responsible for investigating money counterfeiting crimes on the Casual Criminalist, which made me think of DeBardeleben. He was a prolific counterfeiter, so much so that the Secret Service gave him a nickname: "the mall passer". When they finally caught and arrested him, the Secret Service agents found a lot more than counterfeit money. Together with the FBI he was charged with a whole litany of crimes (he wasn't even prosecuted for most of them). He was sent to prison for life and the agents who investigated him said that he committed just about every felony on the books.
