In a way I feel like Vetements was a lightning in a bottle brand that could never sustain itself as long as people profitting off the brand wished they did. Demna’s Balenciaga completely eclipsed Vetements at one point. It almost became redundant to most. But it’s still a pivotal start to what seems normal to us now. Great video!

They couldve so easily differentiated though. Balenc could have been streetwear with Balenc couture cut and sentiment and Vet couldve continued to be 20 minute design made as pure as possible. Theres a huge chasm of difference but 🤷

I appreciate their original disdain for superfluous design, but cynical, low quality, image-based branding is just as empty. A few pieces were interesting, but many looks seemed more about styling-available ready-to-wear garments put together by a professional stylist. Love your editing of the SS15 collection at 2:27 with the split screen and speed ramps. Well done!

I've always been split about Vetements because I don't like irony in fashion, but I do like the weird stuff they put out like those absurdly oversized looks. I think the DHL thing was just trolling to get press attention and it worked, but the self-reference in the latest collection does not. Those minidresses look like their own Shein rip offs. Give me strange: upside down, oversized, or even distorted florals. That's what I'm here for. If it's actually going to sell is another matter of course.

Though it came and went it’s easily the most influential fashion brand of the last 15 years. With their insane prices on basics (hoodies, trainers, t-shirts) they enabled the rest the fashion brands to be able to do the same. They made people comfortable with paying over a thousand on a hoodie or a tshirt. Even shoes. The rest of the industry followed suit.

Edit: The more I think about it, is this the designer equivalent of a “one hit wonder”? Seems like it took over and instantly disappeared. A good video, especially the analysis of the SS25 Vetements show, which in my eyes is just Guram picking up what was "hype" around the brand and trying to carry on with the 'identity-less' vision. Vetements for me has been one of the more interesting brands recently due to its unique ability to remake the mundane into fashionable. I will elaborate more below and provide some small critiques: 1) The DHL T shirt, however memeful it is, has an element which can't be replicated by the other 25$ bootlegs (or the original DHL ones), the predominant being the shrunk cut of it, emphasising shrunk shoulders, something we will see later in the blazers of the FW16. It is funny to see us complain about it being 155$, when the majority of fashion houses now sell their t shirts for 5x that amount. 2) Demna's appointment in Balenciaga was predominantly due to his well understanding of proportions and human body and how you can play with the garment in order to emphasise certain elements of it (the hourglass being the first blazer we see from his Balenciaga is an example of that, and Vetements has always been about proportions and making the mundane items have a certain play on the proportions, like their original bombers having extended sleeves and broader back to give this slouched silhouette ). 3) I would argue that the later Demna era at Vetements has been more influential in terms of his design language and the products offered, as well as the overall presentation. FW17 being one of my favorite shows, tackling social uniforms of everday life, making it in my eyes one of the most VETEMENTS collection there is, as it tackles the uniforms/identities of the everyday people we see on the streets. Whilst SS19 being a much more personal collection about how the clothes shaped his early childhood and the traumatic memories of being a refugee (Im missing a lot of other interesting elements, however I do not wish to be here forever). 4) Demna left after SS20, the capitalist McDonalds collection, every single collection pass that has not been under him (the FW20 has been made from leftover ideas). 5) Every single collection post FW20 feels directionless, as the teams have changed. Guram has been trying to generate buzz without providing substance to why the clothes are the way they are, whilst all the collections prior to FW20 had a unifying theme, the longer Guram holds the position of the CD in Vetements, the vaguer the ideas become, becoming more of a parody of what the brand ones was. Thank you and have a nice day.

It would make sense if they strayed from the initial idea, especially after the brothers fell out. I disgaree with the end notes, for context, I am still relativley newly coming into the fashion scene from a business point of view ,but I guess that is also the kind of people vetements are targeting with their brands definition and style of marketing, so take anything I say with a grain of salt but the way i see it that the fact that Guram is still looking to Denma for ideas and looking back and gaining inspiration for new/revamped designs from previous shows just shows how little he really is thinking about any of the designs. it's just a prime depiction of laziness which is what the brand was attempting to be known for originally ALONG WITH ironically dislpaying the state of fashion which he is now doing again through displaying one of the biggest names and brands in the fashion industry Denma at balenciaga through his ironic and overly ran through idea'd brand to whom of which ideas arent even his in the first place they're still just Denma's ideas from when he was creative director its like reverse psychology but just really lackadaisicaly done. It's just the epitome of 'not working on an idea for more than 20 minutes' which, once again, just adds to the succes of the original idea of the brand. In my opinion.

Ironic dressing is just a prank on consumers that has gone too far, as any trend it will die out eventually, the thing I don't understand is why balenciaga still got another contract with demna... This selling trash to the rich is fading, now you can go to any Walmart and look around and everyone looks balenciaga just because they are truly poor and not caring about fashion. If since the beginning was about the clothes why we keep seeing ticktocks about the poor quality at balenciaga items? As long as the consumers finally admit they have been conned for years this 2 scammers are going to still be around.

I just wonder when is it really going end? it seems like Vetements is still somewhat surviving on the surface (having gigi hadid, travis scott walking the show, many celebrities still wearing their clothes for red carpet events, performances) , but i bet the sales numbers are shit now. Its only a matter of time they have to shut down the brand for good.

Well, at least archivists will have a helluva time. It’s not like they DIDN’T have a spark in fashion. Vetements is like the Delorean of fashion. An unmatched mark in the fashion that came and went

It should be rememebred for sure. Just like mary Quant or Bill Blass. Great brands that were so distinctive of thier time

if you want brands that trade entirely on design you need to be looking to much smaller brands imo

Balenciaga is the same sinking ship. Their bags at the moment are just not it. Le Cagole was a flash in the pan.

If I were demna I would be scrounging for ideas to be edgy when the trend now is more pop or indie sleaze and post normcore Puritanism

Being edgy is exhausting and we can see how vehements and BALENCIAGA have both exhausted their ideas

demna worked at margiela for a couple of years and half of his ideas come from there. the other half is soviet chic. the faceless collective at the beg of vetements? margiela did it. even the vibe of the first catwalk is margiela. not to mention endess ideas that came later: tabi shoes, a top made of belts, models with covered faces, using tape to make "clothes". thank god for uncultured people :)
@understitchYT2 ай бұрын
The margiela influence in the whole concept of the brand is so inherent. The idea of making clothes to simply be good clothes is very Margiela coded. But because it was produced in the ironic ‘undesigned’ way, it was almost as if it was Margiela but if it was the opposite approach
@andreeapopa73172 ай бұрын
@@understitchYT you refer to their words. i'm referring to their actions. the destructured clothes, the full body suits that so closely resemble margiela toile dresses, the sock shoes, i could go on for a while. demna is a great copy cat, not a creator. lucky for him, kering gave him a huge budget and the archive of another actual fashion genius to play with. profit comes first, even in spite of the pedo scandal that i hoped they won't be coming back from. but money buys a lot of things and most of the public has little to no awareness. the world we live in

I really dont like VTMNTS. Older vetements clothes, especially the hoodies with that iconic label on the hood, are honestly still extremely popular on resell sites like grailed. The design philosophy change you were talking about 23 minutes makes a lot of sense. There is something weirdly appealing about vetements ripping designs/images/logos to use as their own (EX: TFD bomber, titanic hoodie, ecstasy hoodie and more.)
@understitchYTАй бұрын
I still think the approach to design is genius, construction was always decent, they just need to stick to the rules they themselves laid out
@rontibm16212 ай бұрын
Just like other street style directors are exiting from big couture houses, Demna will be soon out from Balenciaga. These people ruined those brands image in the favour of fast fashion.

As an artist and designer, I can’t believe how easy they put worthless designs or no taste designs on the runway! For me financial stability is very important besides with a couple of bad season, they become a liability to hire! Oh well. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

At first it was such a good idea, but now it’s become bastardised. I think that it has lost all the validity.
