Valve used to be the 'Good Guy' of game developers. From their outstanding hits in Half-Life, Team Fortress 2, Portal, Left 4 Dead and so on, they have dominated the PC market and revolutionized gaming. But somewhere along the way they had a fall from grace. They stopped selling games and started selling hats. Gambling, lawsuits, illegal activities, after 2011 Valve was getting involved in all kinds of shady stuff.
And it's time I filled you in on the Rise and Fall of Valve.

Valve is a company of two extremes. They are both the 'Good Guys' and the 'Greedy Corpos.' I both respect and admire Valve in the past, but I find their current business practices despicable. Despite all the Anti-Consumer things Valve has done, Half Life: Alyx is a great sign, because Valve actively made a game they knew wouldn't make shit loads of money. It was the first game made with passion as the focus instead of making shit loads of money. So for that, I think Valve is on the right track.

It's never happening, friend. It's been over 15 years of waiting. Most of the original devs, artists and writers who worked on HL2 and Episodes 1+2 are long gone. Not only that, there are 3 generations of consoles and young gamers who never experienced a Valve game being released. And no I don't count HL: Alyx, because the entire thing is a tech demo gimmick majority of gamers will never play. All it proved was Valve games are dead, and modern gamers don't care about a sequel to a 20 year old franchise, that they know the developer doesn't care about finishing, or respect their fans enough to communicate with.

As long as Steam works and gives me an all-in-one storefront and archive for my PC games, all the stuff involving the games they actually make, I couldn't care less about. Although when I say "works", I use that term kinda loosely. I've gone onto the Steam store actively looking to buy a game and come up empty because their storefront is such a massive clusterfuck. And their algorithms, which have on occasionally found for me absolute hidden gems, still haven't learned in 13 years that 'recommended for you because it's popular' has never, not once, resulted in a sale. It's just clogged up my shopping experience like an annoying salesman in a store.

Important correction: Counterstrike wasn't made by Valve. It was a mod for Half-Life that Valve bought from the creators. It's also funny that Blizzard missed the opportunity to do the same with Dota, and Valve bought that too. So, an eye for good shit is also a part of Valve's arsenal.

Usually when a company... 1) Stops releasing games that the fans ask for, in fact beg for... 2) Breaks consumer protection laws 3) When caught, spends millions in legal fees and court costs to avoid giving refunds...the very reason they're in court to begin with 4) Inevitably loses only to continue breaking consumer protection laws and ends up in court again...and loses again 5) Then finally releases a game, except it's a disgraceful pile of shit pay to win game that nobody wants (Artifact) Amazing reputation is long gone. Just the lawsuits alone and Valve's choices are enough. It would have been much cheaper to simply pay the fines and give people refunds. A company once known for making amazing games is now known for being run by nothing but fat greedy assholes.

Valve is like the ice cream machine at McDonalds that is always out of order. There is a documentary on it but in a nut shell, McDonalds makes more money with a broken machine in constant repair that it would if it was up an running. Money is made by exclusive repair people and taking a cut. They point out that other fast food places have their own ice cream machines from the same company, but they are not breaking down.

I'll be honest, I love the 'wild west' nature of steam right now, even with the questionable releases like 'rape day'. I think it's important that we have places where anyone can publish art, even bad or offensive art uncensored. I might not like all of it or even most of it but I don't want any individual or corporation gatekeeping it. Theres a few experiences out there that most people would find bad but appeal to me and other niche communities that would never get greenlit otherwise.

I don't like seeing this quote everywhere in YT comments. It promotes a very cynical and pessimistic perspective of life. It can realistically go either way. I've seen plenty of not-so-great people get their shit together and make very positive changes in their lives. There are also "evil" people who will probably never jump to the other end of the spectrum like Klaus Schwab, Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates, most politicians, etc. And there are very good people who will stay that way. And yes, people change; that doesn't mean they have to change from good to evil or vice versa in every case though. The only constant in this universe is change. Everything is in a constant state of flux and motion. If something appears static, it's because it's changing so slowly (or even so quickly) that you can't see it with your current frame of mind, senses, etc. "They say people never change, but that's bullshit, they do" - Tame Impala/Kevin Parker

Hold on now, I have almost 200 titles on my steam library spanning 13 years and at least 5-6 different PC setups. What they did was legendary considering backwards compatibility usually isn't a PC issue (have experienced some titles no knowing how to handle multi-core processors). Also, in the case of many PC games we would need multiple blu-ray disks to hold all the files (which probably need a day 1 patch). I thought it was great to open Unreal Tournament 3 or FEAR 2, drop my CD-Key into steam and being able to download it anywhere and everywhere from then on. What's BS is when you pay for a physical copy that doesn't have the complete game on disk The lack of physical media is a tragedy for consoles when they become outdated.
@ArchSchizo
@ArchSchizo Жыл бұрын
An SSD is better than a CD. Looking through 200 CDs for games on PC would suck. Also, you had to use delivery or go to a store hoping they had a game in stock. There are worse things than Steam. Cloud gaming might be competitive within your lifetime, marking the death of modding, community fixes, and one-time purchases of games. The industry itself is trying to replicate Hollywood with celebrities and cinematic cutscenes being favored over interesting or fun gameplay. Innovation in games technology/processing power has become focused on zits on human characters, rather than actually complex mechanisms like voxels or AI. There is a good side, however. Indie game studios don't need publishers for retail markets, making them less bound by industry meddling. Indie games are typically incapable of the AAA graphics, so they divert resources to interesting artstyles, presentation, sound design, gameplay... whole genres exist from indie games while AAA games keep chasing trends.

Tell what you want on their gaming development schedules and “anti-consumer” [fucking better than the other platforms by longshots] practices; Valve has and will continue to throw millions and work hard in R&D to push gaming to new extremes and accessibility, if it’s anything Valve loves, it’s community driven accessibility and supporting such ventures of modding, and Linux is open-source, literally the core concept of easily modified OS is something valve shares with games and no wonder they support it. They have faults but they aren’t a Bethesda or EA, theyre focused on technology than games, evident by the fact they are working with multiple companies in VR and even fucking BIC’s (Brain-Interfacing Computers) to advance such technologies to its best potential, and Alyx proved that by starting the push into VR AAA games.

I love your content and channel @theactman. My experience with steam has honestly been a positive one. I remember when ARK survival Evolved first came out I just started getting into PC gaming. I didn't really understand at the time how PC specs translated into gaming performance. So, like the ignorant and electronically stunted person that I was as a teen, I bought ARK. I booted it up and it was so unplayable that it would almost kill my laptop. So, I sent them an email explaining the situation and they refunded me. However, I should mention that I did say in my email to them that there were other games I had my eye on and wanted to purchase with the refund, which I promptly did. So, that may be why they refunded me.

I mean, Valve has been working on Proton (a fork of wine) to run Windows games in Linux computers since their Linux-based Steam Machine was released, and years after the project being cancelled they revived Proton for their (also Linux based) Steam Deck, which is basically the only serious modern competition to Nintendo Switch. And they're are working on Valve Deckard, the successor of the Valve Index. They are not very active at game development nowdays, yes, but they are innovating in the hardware industry a lot. Definitely they didn't fall yet.
