Wrestling Bios Presents - The Rise of Eric Bischoff in WCW
The WWE has always been known as the leader of professional wrestling. These days, when it comes to viewership, branding, licensing and profits, World Wrestling Entertainment is an absolute machine. In the mid 90s though, Eric Bischoff and WCW wanted to take on the WWE and knock Vince McMahon off the number 1 spot. While many people laughed at Eric's vision of running the best wrestling company in the United States, he shocked everyone when WCW began defeating the WWF in the Monday Night television ratings.
Eric Bischoff began his WCW career as a low broadcaster. He would conduct backstage interviews and generally do the jobs that the main commentators in WCW didn't want to do. When an oppurtunity arose, Eric Bischoff became the Excutive Producer of WCW. After landing this job, Eric Bischoff went on to create WCW Nitro, a TV programme that went head to head with WWF Raw on Monday Nights. With the creation of the nWo and a very entertaining undercard, Eric Bischoff's WCW became the number 1 wrestling brand in America.
This mini documentary looks at The Rise of Eric Bischoff in WCW. Topics covered include:
- Eric Bischoff's early life
- His relationship with Sonny Onoo
- How Eric Bischoff was able to get work in the AWA
- Eric Bischoff makes his way to WCW to become a broadcaster and commentator
- Bischoff becoming the Executive Producer for WCW
- WCW moving to the Disney MGM Studios in Orlando
- The creation of WCW Nitro and going head to head with Raw
- Eric Bischoff creating the nWo faction
- The eventual downfall of WCW and Eric's attempts at saving the company
- Much More!

Another AMAZING BIO! Bischoff was a genius & he had balls. No promoter went head to head with Vince like Eric did, & as you said here, he deserves a lot of credit for changing the landscape of wrestling during one of it's best eras. I always looked at his downfall similarly to Gotti's. He became drunk with power, & to a certain extent fell in love with himself, success-wise. Still, his legacy is set in stone with the greatest men in the business.

Getting to see talents like Benoit, Malenko, Guerrero, Jericho, and Mysterio was such a treat. Those guys could outperform 99% of WWE's roster at the time, and were the in-ring equals of Michaels and Hart. I wish we had gotten to see all of them together in the same promotion. And, the facade of rasslin' was still somewhat believable (not all show biz and transparently staged like today). What a time to be alive!

That's what was great about what bischoff did he not only gave us nwo he brought in the high flying talents, he brought in the lightweight division a ground breaking feat, then he showcased new Japan and lucha talents and put them on the mainstream even during the nwo era in WCW , most American pro wrestling territories didn't have a focus on new Japan and lucha talents So many legends came from early 90s to NWO era WCW It also caused Vince to do the same Eric's influence on American pro wrestling is still felt And some work for promotions to this day l

Thanks for showing Bischoff unbiased. So many people on KZbin hate on him for destroying WCW. Frankly, if he had gotten the tv deal and bought the company, I think they would still be around. His biggest mistake was holding the course during '99 when he should have zagged again rather than zigging. But that company would have never had the success it did if it wasn't for Eric. And he could have done it again, if there had not been so many factors behind the scenes working against him. I'm with Kevin Sullivan when he says there was some shady business going on with the company sell. WWF has made a fortune just off of DVD sells and it's airings of old WCW footage.

Cannot stand Bischoff but credit where credit is due, he did change the face of wrestling and brought it into the 90's really well. One interesting thing people need to know about Eric Bischoff is that the man has no College degree. But when you look at his resume, it's pretty impressive for someone who's a one trick pony imo. I'm not a huge fan of the him but the fact that he became the only man to really take it to Vince McMahon is an accomplishment in of itself. Because of that, all I can say is this. *College is Overrated.*

Anyone else used to think it was weird when Bischoff & Hollywood would make their NWO entrance? They would stop in the entrance way & Hogan would grab Bischoff by his chin the top & his head & kiss him on the cheek & say the camera “I love this man” 🤔

WCW should come back.

They can't. Vince McMahon owns everything related to WCW. The only way it could come back is if he brought it back. And hope to God he doesn't because it will suck ass like his own promotion does now.

Bischoffs was a GD genius in many ways. Let's not forget ppl.... Albert Einstein needed help tying his own FN shoes. Ok ? Bischoff was extremely smart in many areas. But yes..... He ultimately "dropped the ball" and "couldn't tie his shoes" in the pro wrestling business.

I loved wrestling as a kid, but I was all WWF. WCW production and camera quality just seemed whack to me. So when WWF caught steam along with their better production quality it was a wrap.

I MYSELF AM A HUGE FAN, MARK OR WHATEVER YOU WANT TO CALL IT FOR PRO WRESTLING. I ALSO WRITE AND RESEARCH ON INTERESTING FIGURES ( PAST AND PRESENT) OF PRO WRESTLING. SOME BEFORE MY TIME BUT BEING BORN IN 1986 AND ATTENDING MY FIRST LIVE WRESTLING EVENT IN '92 A WWF SHOW IN THE CINCINNATI GARDENS, I BASICALLY WAS A HUGE FAN FROM MY FIRST MEMORIES AND OTHER THEN MY FATHER MY FIRST REAL LIFE SUPER HERO'S WERE PRO WRESTLERS ( AND AT A WONDERFUL TIME , HOGAN AND HULKAMANIA WAS AROUND IT'S PEAK) SO GUYS LIKE HOGAN , MACHO MAN , WARRIOR, JAKE THE SNAKE ,MR PERFECT , L.O.D. , DEMOLITION , THE ROCKERS AND MANY OTHER WRESTLERS. MY FAVORITE BIO OR RESEARCH TO DO IS ON WRESTLERS FROM THIS TIME PERIOD . 1990- 1998 UP TO 2000 , BRETT HART, UNDERTAKER, SHAWN MICHAELS, THE ROCK , MIC FOLEY ( MAYBE THE MOST INCREDIBLE AND FASCINATING WRESTLER OF ALL TIME ) THE ROCK AND MAYBE THE BIGGEST DRAW MY FAVORITE EVER STEVE AUSTIN. I KNOW THE AMOUNT OF MONEY , TIME AND RESEARCH THAT GOES INTO MAKING WELL THOUGHT OUT BIO' S/ DOCS ON WRESTLERS ( EXP WRESTLERS FROM THE KAY FABE TIMES ) AND I DON'T EVEN PRODUCE YOU TUBE CONTENT TO GO ALONG WITH THE INFORMATION I'VE OBTAINED AND STRATIGIC WAY I'VE WRITTEN AND PUBLISHED BIOS AND DOC'S. I ONCE HAD THE MIS FORTUNE OF COMING INTO CONTACT WITH TAMMY SYNTCH ( A.K.A.) SUNNY IN THE EARLY TO MID 2000'S WHO WANTED TO DO ON CAMERA INTERVIEW AS WELL AS HELP ME WITH RE SEARCH INTO DOCS FOR BRETT HART AND SHAWN ( MAINLY BASED AROUND THERE ENTIRE FUED , AS I REACHED OUT TO BOTH OF THEM OR AT LEAST THERE MANAGEMENT TEAM TO NEVER HEAR BACK FROM BRETT OR HIS PEOPLE, AND SHAWN MICHAELS PEOPLE TELLING ME IT WAS THE PAST AND HE WAS NOT INTERESTED IN HELPING ME WITH ANY INFORMATION OR INTERVIEWS PERTAINING HIM, HIS CAREER OR BRETT HART. ) SUNNY WANTED 15 THOUSAND DOLLARS FOR BEHIND THE SCENE INFORMATION NOT KNOWN TO THE PUBLIC , I DIDN'T HAVE THAT TO INVEST INTO THE ENTIRE DOC LET ALONE 3 HOURS OF INFO AND INTERVIEW FROM SUNNY WHO IS A ADMITTED LIER ON THE ENTIRE SUBJECT. I RESPECT AND ENJOY YOUR CONTENT AND RESPECT IT ON A LEVEL NOT MANY CAN KNOWING THE INCREDABLE AMOUNT OF TIME AND WORK THAT GOES INTO PRODUCING GREAT CONTENT

Hogan wasn’t “one of the most recognized wrestlers” he was the most recognized! Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE knew who hogan was in the 80s and 90s, even those who never watched wrestling knew who he was! You’d had to been alive back then to understand just how big Hogan was!
