Dustin Rhodes portrayed the Goldust character in the WWF, a character that became succesful thanks mainly to Dustin himself and how he went all-in with the gimmick. After a good WWF run that would see Goldust become a multi-time Intercontinental Champion, Dustin decided to return to WCW (a place that Dustin considered home). The only issue here is that WCW was not the same place that Dustin had left back in 1995, and because Dustin had so much success with the outlandish Goldust character, the decision was made to have Dustin debut a new "out-there" gimmick named "SEVEN" (sometimes spelt Se7en or 7even).
After some introductory vignettes, Turner Broadcasting decided that the Seven character should get nixed. Vince Russo approached Dustin in regards to removing this gimmick before it truly got started, and Dustin agreed to go in a different direction. Because the vignettes had already aired, Dustin end up coming out on WCW Nitro completely dressed in the Seven attire, and he would cut a worked shoot promo where he trashed the WWF, the Goldust character, and WCW for "making him" become yet another outlandish character. This video looks at the Seven vignettes, the TV debut, and what Dustin did in WCW following the removal of the Seven gimmick.
00:00 - The Success of the Goldust gimmick
07:20 - WCW introduces Seven
11:05 - The Seven Worked Shoot Promo

They fire wrestlers for blading? Do they have to only blade up when the company says they can or something? I've often wondered if it wouldn't be better to just have fake blood hidden somewhere for such occasions, rather than having their actual blood flying everywhere. Seems like a recipe for disaster to me, using real blood, and it disfigures guys.

I remember when all of this went down, and I remember being really excited about the gimmick. I have always liked the crazy supernatural gimmicks, due to the fact that your options with them are essentially limitless. I liked the vignettes, and I was a huge fan of Rhodes and all of his various gimmicks (I recognized him in the first vignette), and I was really excited to see what Russo would do with it. I was disappointed that they didn't go with it, but as a teenager at the time, I loved all Shitstain's worked shoot stuff. It's a shame that Dustin never really got the chance to be on top. He was as good as his dad, if not better. He just never really got the chance to show it for a variety of different reasons. At least he is being treated with respect and being treated like a legend in AEW. He deserves that.

Standards and Practices impeded a lot of the things creative wanted to do at that time and im not surprised they got in the way of Seven continuing on. That worked shoot promo is a huge reason it is remembered as well as it is and if Russo couldn't write the character into the show he had to change its course. I wonder if the intention was to re-debut Dustin shortly after and things just kept getting in the way of doing that for Dustin. Im guessing that the course of Dustin's debut of that character was well underway so they basically had to pay the intro off at least once. Seven likely didnt have real legs anyway but it is a very interesting story.

As I recall, part of Turner Broadcasting’s concern stemmed from the growing public hysteria around child abduction in the US. Following a handful of high-profile abduction cases in the mid to late ‘90s, US news media had started whipping people into a frenzy over the idea that every child was in constant danger of being kidnapped whenever their parents so much as blinked. South Park would famously parody the situation a couple years later with the episode “Child Abduction is Not Funny” when the hysteria hit its peak following the abduction of Elizabeth Smart.

I love how in the promo he finishes it off with "You will never forget the name of..." and then he pauses and before he can say "Dustin Rhodes", a fan shouts "GOLDUST!"

As a youngster I loved that entrance. Due to my family moving around, I actually never saw Dustin wear the gimmick without the white paint until this video, but I think there could have been something there.

Dustin Rhodes was doing his best Peter Pan interpretation? Gotta give it to Dustin though as just like his dad and his brother, he threw himself into whatever gimmick he was given.

I would’ve liked to have seen where this gimmick would have went. The vignettes were well produced and effectively creepy. I don’t know how it would’ve translated in the arena though.

I always thought that even with that stupid burial promo, if they'd actually pushed Rhodes and allowed him to tear through some of the gimmicks on the roster that fans weren't liking so much in 1999/2000 (And there were a lot of those) and his gimmick could have been an audience avatar rebelling against everything wrong with WCW at the time, it could have worked. But they weren't going to do that. Ever.

Absolutely this. Dustin could have been a major force in WCW after that promo, but then.... what happened? Nada.

You do a hell of a nice job on your video packages. The right amount of wrestling history and irreverent humor, sprinkled with just enough opinion and conjecture make your videos very entertaining. Plus you don't mind using a little bit of stronger language because you're dealing with adults here. And, oh yeah, no robotic delivery from a computerized voiceover. Keep it up man!

I always attempted to figure out how no one seemed to realise how the character was coming across before he debuted. I know Goldust was controversial but he actually committed to it in the early days and made the character interesting. With Seven it just seemed to be let's make him overly weird just for the sake of it and was a case of let's do something similar to what worked for you before.

It seemed more like a horror movie akin to "The Boogeyman" or "Slender Man" These promos gave out some very child molester/murderer vibes. I'm surprised Russo didn't write in the "Come float with me" line, ripping off IT
