@@nickwarner8158 well that’s probably because reducing triggers to an absolutist argument comes off as a bit disingenuous. Am I responsible for a blue t shirt I’m wearing triggering you? Am I responsible for triggering if someone with trauma comes to my house and I do something likely to trigger their known trauma (intentionally setting off loud bangs for the PTSD example)? Absolutely. Am I responsible if my family member requests I use she/her pronouns but I don’t think they’ve put enough effort in so use he/him (Blair’s example)? Absolutely.

@@AnObviousMjolnir i agree. If you intentionally trigger someone's ptsd, you're an asshole. But expecting nobody to ever wear blue again? You're a jerk too. The more general the trigger, the less right you have to complain. It also matters if the person even knew you had triggers. My brother gives me trigger warnings for everything before I watch it, I tell him I dont need him to unless its XYZ. But there are smaller details he doesn't know will trigger me, sometimes I dont know it will either. He gets upset and never stops apologizing, I use those exact words. I have to deal with it. That's on me. Likewise, I trigger him sometimes. Usually it's stuff that, if I thought before I spoke, I would not have said. He cringes, I apologize and make sure he's OK, we move on.

My son (daughter?) came out to me as trans a few weeks ago and has begun hormone therapy. She’s seemed distant over the past year and now says this is what she’s been dealing with. She doesn’t talk a lot, so at this point (her therapist and) I just have to trust that she’s correctly identifying her feelings of dysphoria. The fact that any inkling of questioning her, reads as me not supporting her transition, makes it *really* difficult to know how similar her experience may be to the extreme dysphoria I felt at her age (17). Back then, it wouldn’t have occurred to me that I might have been born the wrong gender for my sex. All I know is that I honestly thought she was “all boy,” in every way, while she was growing up. She still dresses the same now, and says she’s just a tomboy. Sometimes I feel like I’m jumping off a cliff, knowing that all I can do is support her but not having any idea where we will land.

As an actual non-binary person it really sickens me to see these people give us a bad name with all these labels and pronouns they do it for attention and their own personal gain, I personally couldn't care less what pronouns people use on me or what they call me, I present myself the way I present myself and people can see me however they like, It's only natural to use whatever pronouns you want on a person. These people really need to understand that gender and sexuality aren't something you just suddenly call yourself, It's something you realize about yourself, and how you handle that realization is your choice, as much as I support being yourself and doing whatever makes you happy I think making new labels for literally everything damages the community and segregates us further.

@@vegainthestreets ok yeah, but giving a content warning for if a movie or TV show has animal cruelty or sexual violence or something is a different matter entirely from having a break-down because a friend has the color blue in their house. Like, I have an animal cruelty trigger (for lack of a better term), among other things. I got into Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, got hit REALLY hard with Part 1 Episode 1, and really wish someone warned me about it ahead of time. (Season 2 (aka, Part 3) onward the animal cruelty elements come back, but I was engaging more with the community and came in fully prepared). So I know how important something like that can be. That being said, I am under no disillusion about people going a little too widespread and honestly authoritarian with their triggers. Little "triggered" didn't become a meme because of assholes just feeling like making fun of mental trauma... it's because the people who consider themselves advocates made memes out of themselves in the first place. Note how I said "content warning" instead of "trigger warning" a while back? That's because the whole issue has been made such a farce that I choose to not engage with that vocabulary, even with matters as politically neutral as this that I feel I can believe in. I feel like I invite mockery if I use the term "trigger warning", so I say "content warning" in its place when applicable. 100% I blame the people who lose their shit over THEIR "color blue" and put that weight on the people around them, making anyone else with these struggles look bad, tbh.

I’m autistic, but I’m more well-adjusted to social settings than most in the spectrum, and I would attribute that at least partially to not getting QUITE enough support to grow up with a normal amount of challenge. What are we doing to our children? We are just creating a circus of confusing labels and words to describe what we can't. We are all different, and a label shouldn't be important. I had trouble coming to terms with the fact that I'm gay, because I don't want that label slapped on me. There is more to me than "gay". It's literally the smallest part of my being. But other people seem to be desperately grabbing for labels. And for what? All we are doing is making it so confusing and messy for our children that they won't be able to work out what their sexuality or gender is, because we've placed so much doubt in their minds. Kids who never would have questioned if they'd been born in past generations will now start to soul search and attach labels to themselves that aren't necessary or accurate. It's not fair that we are creating so much confusion for them.

If its something serious like epilepsy, eating disorders, rape or suicide or anything related to self harm, there should be a tw. however, something as common as a colour should not. if it triggers you, you yourself should take action and be responsible enough to avoid something like that. if loud noises trigger you, because I knew a girl who was triggered by clapping and loud laughter, then you should try to avoid that. the girl I knew would avoid going to place that she knew would be noisy, and if there was an unexpected loud noise she would remove herself from that situation. she also wore noise cancelling headphones.

I use they/them pronouns and even I think that neopronouns are kind of out of control, like, your favorite animal or color isn’t a gender. I don’t think it’s too crazy to have she/her, he/him, and they/them. That’s only three options. Myself and a few others I know don’t get offended by people assuming binary pronouns like “she“ or “he” (mostly “she” for me) because how are they supposed to know? It’s natural for most people to want to assign a gender to someone even if they look ambiguous. On a rational level I don’t think I need to be offended by someone who “assumes my gender” 🤷🏼. It’s just annoying when people have to throw a huge tantrum over someone using they/them pronouns. (And yes, I’m actually intersex, although I don’t believe you have to be to go by they/them pronouns).
@clairecosio3 жыл бұрын
@em ! I'm definitely not intersex, but I'm gender fluid (afab) and I think it's arbitrary to say there is a set number of genders. people experience everything differently, and that's the same with genders. even if you said there are 100+ genders or something like that, there is always going to be people that don't fit into that. the only answer is to let people identify how they feel fit because everyone knows themselves best. I hope that answers your question :)
@clairecosio3 жыл бұрын
@em ! yeah, that's a great question! everyone's gender is different and is basically apart of your personality, so it's kind of like thinking about and part of your personality. you kinda know if you're introverted or extroverted, and gender is similar (in my opinion). it's like there is some part of you that just knows where you fit in (or don't fit in) even if it takes a while to find out the term for it. gender dysphoria also is a good indicator, though not all transgender people experience that
@clairecosio3 жыл бұрын
@em ! there isn't any "right" or "correct" feelings for each gender. just look up some genders and figure out which one fits you best! there is no right or wrong answers because you know yourself best. play around with different labels and pronouns and figure what works best for you. even if you later realize that a certain gender isn't who you are (or even realizing that you weren't even trans), all that matters is finding out what makes you feel comfortable and that there are no "mistakes." you don't have to fit into someone else's definition of a certain gender because you are you! How did we get here.. I think with the internet young people are desperate to stand out because it's romantized and praised over and over again to get attention (likes, followers) and you have to be something to stand out. Young people do not know their defining factors yet. Also when you're a teen finding yourself out and putting labels on your personality is fun because it's all new. So you contemplate everything about yourself and feel a dopamine high when you find a new characteristic, like you're special.

I’ve always had the question, these people say that sex and gender are different. Why are they now changing pronouns to fit with gender versus sex? What is their reasoning for that?

I will say they/them if I don't know what someone is. No way in hell I'd call anyone "bunnyself"

Exactly! If someone prefers for me to use they/them pronouns then I'll use them, it's not a big deal. But there's a difference between they/them which is actual pronouns that we use on a daily basis in the English language and bunnyself which is just made up.

@@vran.7745 not in the same way as neopronouns are. People don't just pick a random word and use it in place of a major English function such as verbs, adjectives or pronouns. Its a massive change that suddenly needs to be hyper individualized and creates mass confusion just so some people can be special and feel different
@vran.77453 жыл бұрын
@@jathpurr "just so some people be special and feel different" yeah my fucking ass. People use neopronouns because they feel more comfortable with them, some may choose them because they mean something to them, me as an example. I'm not special nor I feel different, I just find myself in certain words that serve to better describe me. Also, a friendly reminder: she/her used to be a set of neopronouns and the first set of neos was created somewhere in 1800 (thon/thons if i remember correctly)

I worked on the yearbook staff for my school and I would have kids who would come up to us upset because we didn’t use their preferred name or pronouns even though they never told us. If you tell us what your preferred name was, we would change it in order to avoid conflict. Otherwise we go with what is in the system. I had a friend who got upset with my that their other friend’s preferred name wasn’t in the book and I had to explain that it’s not my problem that they never told us
