16:25 No, you are wrong. You seem young and ill-traversed, let's say. The world is not America. You don't negotiate with terrorists. This film does give us a heart for the antagonist. General Francis X. Hummel. One of the best villains of all time, because he is not evil. An action film in the 90's with Bond in America, with a great villain. Of course peps love this film

YES!! One of my favorite action movies as a kid! There were talks of a Sequel, but it was cancelled as Sean Connery, RIP, retired from acting, Nicolas Cage was too busy working on the National Treasure movies and Michael Bay was too busy working on The Island, BAD BOYS 2, and TRANSFORMERS.

Apparently Connery's experience filming "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" was so bad, he refused to act full-time anymore. I've always held a minor grudge against the director Stephen Norrington because of that, although truth be told, Connery was probably on his way out anyway.

Honest! $100 million was more in the '90s than it is now. But it's about the principle that if you pay a ransom to a terrorist organization. others could come and ask for money because you know the government is paying. I love Michael Bay! He's a great popcorn director!

Well considering the money is from illegal arms trading WITH foreign terrorists nobody would know. It doesn’t exist because Congress doesn’t know about it. The reason they wouldn’t negotiate is because the government would have to admit that they let soldiers die for nothing. That they, the government fucked up.

Right!, never negotiate with terrorists. Sidebote: I use to be a corrections officer and we had to sign a form agreeing that if there was ever an uprise by the inmates and we were taken hostage that under no circumstances would they ever pay money or ever agree to release a prisoner to save our lives. Basically, we would die. The main reason is, if they did it once, then it would set a precedent and weaken the entire pineal system, knowing they could gain power and control by killing or threatening to kill an officer. You know I really enjoy this channel aa well as a few other reaction channel but it has become abundantly clear that there is a huge lack of understanding of the real world works and why. Their saying he's a good man and he just killed a bunch of American soldiers that he claimed to love and represent. Or and I forgot about the innocent American civilians.

I think the major reason for "The Rock" being so good is a long pre-production period which gave the actors a lot of time for rehearsal and time to perfect the script with input from the actors. It was Nicolas Cage's idea that Stanley Goodspeed doesn't swear. That's why we get so many creative expletives from Goodspeed.
@Proteus2905

General Hummel was a good man with an honorable cause. But he made two grave mistakes, One: On a mission like that you need a crew you can completely trust but in addition to his long time team he brought other marines with whom he worked for the first time. Two: If you expect your men to show unwavering loyalty, trust, and sacrifice, then you must inform them of all aspects of the operation and hide nothing from them. Hummel knew that even this "small" amount of only one hundred million would probably not be paid, since it would have fatal consequences for an incumbent government to negotiate with terrorists.

fun fact: Steph mentions Connery looking like Gandolf (Lord of the Rings). Connery was actually offered the role of Gandolf because Peter Jackson, Director, thought the movie would bomb without a name star. Jackson offered Connery 15% of the gross, a deal virtually unheard of in Hollywood. Connery turned the role down because he didn't understand the script for the movie. Instead he did "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen". LOTR grossed $3 billion for the trilogy, which meant Connery gave up a $450 million payday. Connery said it was the stupidest choice he ever made.

I kind of agree. "Why don't you just pay them?" The US government loses 100 Million dollars if somebody puts a comma in the wrong place. I guess the problem is, if you pay them off, what happens the next time someone takes hostages and asks for 100 million dollars?

I see lots of people not understand why they don't pay the ransom. If they just pay it essentially signals to everyone "hey if you can come up with a good enough hostage situation, you can milk a lot of money out of the government because they will pay" and invites more hostage situations like this. Better to do as much as you can without paying, to send the message that this will not work out for anyone thinking of trying to do the same, rather than risk more people endangering innocents because you rolled over and gave the terrorists what they want to take the easy way out in the short term. Of course that has nothing to do with whether the terrorists might be kind of right, in this case it was very arguably a righteous cause but regardless of the cause and them paying being probably the right thing to do it will still essentially show that all you need is enough leverage to get the government to make you rich.

A great reaction to a terrific movie, I also think it's nice that you're going through this genre in particular, which I already really enjoyed with "First Blood" (1982), while "The Rock" (1996) is one of my absolute favorites from Nicolas Cage, along with "Face Off" and "Con Air" (1997), which I hope we'll see more of here in the future.

This is one of the best action films ever in my opinion. It's got a great story ploy, actors got great relationship (especially Connery and Cage), amazing acting (like Hummel and Anderson shouting at each other intensely back and forth), great action scenes (especially the opening scene when the Force Recons penetrated the weapons depot), and most of all a very sympathetic (or for some veterans empathetic) villain that makes the audience feels that he isn't a villain. And of course the killer soundtrack that really suits well for the main theme of this film; betrayal. Not sure if it's true or not, but I remember reading somewhere that the general plot of this movie (the betrayal and mistreatment of vets and their families like no recognition, no compensation, all forms of benefits denied etc) had a little truth in real life.

Whether true or not in reality, the common trope of the mid 90's action flick is: "The United States Government does not negotiate with terrorists." It was such a pervasive action movie trope at the time that the script writer did not even feel the need to mention it, it would just be understood by the audience of the time that paying the money is not an option.
@PorterJustPorter
@PorterJustPorter Жыл бұрын
Yep, the trope was pretty ubiquitous for the time. I recall at the time even thinking it was pretty dumb in the context of this film, considering we're told that a government "illegal slush fund" already exists. They could've averted this whole mess by merely transferring funds from one illegal Account to another. Lol

Funny you should mention Sean Connery having the most iconic voice, one of his best performances is actually being a voice actor for a CGI character in a live-action action dramedy Fantasy film. The film is called Dragonheart. He plays a dragon named Draco. Great cast too. Dennis Quaid, Pete Postelwaite, David Thewlis, Jason Isaacs, Julie Christie, and Sean of course. Film is a roller coaster of emotions, but a very fun film. Just a warning bring the Kleenex’s you will need them throughout the film.

The heartbreaking part of the plot of the movie is that soldiers really aren’t taken care of in reality. The insurance that soldiers are offered and often take is absolute garbage, and often come back from war in a condition that makes them uninsurable by any other company, so they end up completely broke, and their families aren’t taken care of. So many of our vets end up homeless, and are forced to turn to drugs and alcohol as a means to cope with physical pain or psychological trauma because they can’t afford treatment or medication. Their addictions end up destroying what little they have left until they’re wandering the streets at night screaming at invisible hallucinations, with nothing left in their life to live for. It’s criminal.

Apparently, according to Michael Bay on the citation edition via laser disc They said that there was a bunch more scenes with Ed Harris's Francis X. Hummel that were left on the cutting room floor and that the original version of the rock was close to about 3 1/2 hours. Scenes that were cut and left on the floor. 1. Major Baxter (David Morse) in dress blues meeting Hummel at his wife's grave discussing, if this is the only option. 2. Capt. Fry and Darrow (Gregory Sporlider and Tony Todd) talking about what they would do with $1 million while standing post in the lighthouse also poking fun at Hummel. Also discussing that they should execute one of the hostages. (This scene was cut because it gave away who they are too early in the film as the real antagonists) 3. Major Baxter (David Morse) Was originally shot in the cheek, head and in the throat by Capt. Darrows return fire, but the scene was re-shot to get a R rating by the MPAA. The rock originally got an NC-17 rating 4. Hummel (Ed Harris) Stands over Commander Anderson's (Michael Biehn) body and looks saddened mutters the word "I'm sorry son" as he closes (Biehns) dead eyes for whatever reason that scene was cut, and the other one stayed 5. Hummel (Ed Harris) Baxter (David Morse) talk about evacuating and how But it showed that

Well if they just say yes and give them the money that’s technically not negotiating 😂 Also we do negotiate with terrorists, how do you think we get our prisoners back

Hans Zimmer writes the best music. The score is half the movie.

When it comes to incredible voices, Morgan Freeman is up there with Sean. I need to see if he’s done any reading for audio books.

There's a fan theory that "Mason" was a cover name and that his character was actually James Bond

This, and Faceoff I think are Nick Cage’s best acting roles. Some of his work is a little overboard and over acted, but there are still some gems like Moonstruck. I know this is a unpopular opinion but I LOVE ConAir. Most people think it’s trash, but it’s a cult classic that I watch every chance I get.

Entrapment is another good movie with an older Sean Connery in it. I had a quick look and can’t see any results for it on KZbin.
