Meet the Rolex Submariner 41mm Kermit! Or Cermit. Or Starbucks. Well, whatever weird name makes you tick, in full Kermit-suit we took it to the test: is it worth its hype? And some other Big Questions answered.
How much is a new Rolex Submariner?
The Rolex Submariner 2020 has a 41mm steel case, a COSC certified, in-house calibre and a 70 hour power reserve. It’s 300 meters water resistant and it costs around 9,000 euros.
How does the Rolex Submariner wear on the wrist?
And it must be said… it works really well on the wrist. And it just looks so… appealing… It really feels like a watch you could get married to.
Why is this Rolex so expensive?
Having actually visited all the manufacturing sites of Rolex in Switzerland, I'm always happy to share my experiences on Rolex. The price is a combination of the actual materials, the R&D, the production and prestige. At its core, Rolex doesn’t really see itself as a luxury company in the jewelery or fashion sense. At its core, it really is an engineering company. Like Porsche, they believe in evolution, not revolution.
They rather make hundreds of thousands of impeccably running, sturdy and reliable watches than reinvent the rules of nature. In my video I further explain this philosophy.

I like the combination of colour, this watch is starting to grow on me. Still slightly smaller than the Sea Dweller and the newer bracelet with a wider clasp is a nice upgrade.

how different is it when Rolex already made this combination, albeit with an aluminum bezel, and then they had the earlier version with de ceramic bezel but green dial. That one could be argued is different.

Well that really is a question more difficult to answer than who invented the wheel... I think becoming good friends with your AD is by far the easiest way. Even experienced journalists can't buy their watches via Rolex... it's always the AD-way (unfortunately)

Gorgeous piece...the instant celebrity that goes along with owning a Rolex is off-putting for me-there are other brands whose engineering is equal to Rolex without the the built-in brand gouging, the wait, or the self-conscious opulence of the brand. Again, if the watch were a musical composition, it would be rightly celebrated, and as a work of engineering, it should- just not on my wrist. Having said all that, I love the watch.

What a rant! You really went off on the Rolex “investors”. But if you want them to go away, you need to feed them some crypto currency “tips” and they will chase after your lead! Like many, I also thought the grey market price seemed OOC. But having recently tried one on, the LV is beyond amazing. Not sure it sparks romantic feelings but the $20k plus price does not seem ridiculous when considering the tech specs, the look and feel, and the comparables. Good job on this video. I think for them it's a matter of balancing production numbers vs. a certain price point and indeed creating some scarcity. Quite annoying for us indeed, but it's for them a reasonably succesfull way... and that's the Rolex way, they don't have to explain everything to us :)

I like you’ve actually been there rather than just another Instagram addled fan boy. I’m not sure if it’s idiots trying to flip for profit or HK Ad’s who own grey market shops that’s the problem tho. Which also leads me to ask why Rolex continues to send the bulk of product to China if they really care about it. Certainly the Internet is the main culprit. It also gave us a pandemic. My dad owned a Rolex. I had a sub date bought from a Rolex boutique in 2006 at a whopping 25% discount, Those days are long gone even tho the watch hasn’t much changed. The internet turned a steel sports watch into a luxury item.

Thanks, I'm glad you noticed! It definitely was a great experience to visit them. Before I went, I wasn't really a fan of the brand. Though I did respect their legacy, I'd never thought of buying a Rolex. After the visit, I came away with a different point of view and was quite impressed by their dedication. I've not ever seen a company that's so obsessed with quality control. Literally no other company gets close - and that's what got my respect. Concerning the distribution: I unfortunately don't have figures on that but assumed it is true, it would definitely be a liability for them in the future...

The green bezel doesn’t work. But it shows at a glance that this is the 2020 sub and that holds appeal for watch nerds and the rich. Exclusivity. Ugly as the Kermit and not quite as ugly as the Hulk but everyone has seen the prices they are trading for. So everyone wants to jump on the bandwagon. The pose. The fact that they will be rare in the field. The fact that they can be sold for massive profit. So there are two types of people wearing this watch in public. The rich who spend a fortune and get to the top of the list. And the rich who are prepared to spend a fortune lining somebody else’s pockets. As for the guy on the street into horology. Forget it. I prefer mine for three reasons. 1. Bought at list from an AD when lists didn’t exist. 2. It’s on my wrist. 3. I didn’t give some third party rich guy thousands of my hard earned money. This is the way of Rolex in 2020. And this is why I’m out. I have two Rolex watches there won’t be a third.
