The Rugrats are back for both a revival series and a live action/creepy CG film. I do not have much faith in this.

I'm starting to get annoyed with the whole "introduce a new generation to this and that" if you wanted to introduce a younger generation to something then just replay the old shows. Like PieGuy said why not reboot or continue old shows that weren't really popular and repackage as new to a younger generation.

Becuase money and pulling in view babe. They want the views and they will use any method for it. No more reboots please,2016 powerpuff girls and TTG were too much of a blow for me and reboots always go hlaf ass these days becuase the team behind the show doesnt care or know in depth about the old series and the network couldn't really give any shits if they do have any clue about how it was.

Why do we have to reboot a show to introduce a new generation to an old show? They're acting like the old show is completely inaccessible to newer generations, or that new generations just won't "get it."

To be fair, there are some aspects of certain 90s shows that new generations just won't get because they were built around the culture of the time period they were made in. I still remember how awkward it was in Hey Arnold: The Jungle Movie how they had to shoehorn in cell phones and point out that beepers were obsolete. It just reminded me of why this show would not work today. It's a great show, but it was a show that only could have existed in the 90s and it's better if it stays that way. I feel like Rugrats is the same way.

If they feel like they have nowhere to go, then it could spell the downfall of the network. There's simply too much nostalgia plaguing popular media these days. That was the whole joke of South Park's Member Berries. They intentionally did it over and over to death.

They stopped trusting their future long ago. In the past 10!years nickelodeon new shows bite the dust almost immediately. With either failing ratings or something else(Outside of the loud House). They realize that their old stuff brings back their hype and they’re riding it for as long as it takes them, because that’s technically where the ratings are now. In fact they’re so scared about the new shows not getting ratings that they are willing to just put their new shows on Netflix (ie Pinky Malinky). Welcome to the Wayne went MiA after its first two weeks being weak in ratings, and even Bunsen is a beast got cancelled after one season.

Nick pander constantly pander to Nostalgia, even to shows that were mediocre or poor Cartoon Network neglect their past and heritage, forgetting their older much loved shows even exist. To put it to perspective, Nick celebrated Rocket Powers 20th anniversary, yet Cartoon Network did nothing for Ed,Edd n Eddy and Dexter's Laboratory. There needs to be a balance.

Epiphany Scott Yeah I'm aware. I think that is where a lot of my problems with this sort of things come from. I already know it'll be horrible and low effort. Why? Because they're only in it for the cash and know people will aimlessly watch it without a thought. Maybe it'll be good, but I strongly doubt that. In my eyes they should just make more original toons and give newer creators a chance.

@RyanStorey1231
@RyanStorey1231 6 жыл бұрын
It's the same with Hey Arnold. While I'm happy that The Jungle Movie was finally made and I did like it, it did remind me of why this show wouldn't work today. It's rooted in 90s culture, and seeing how they had to shoehorn things like introducing cell phones and mention that beepers are obsolete just shows just how awkward it is to see this show in the 21st Century. And just look at the numbers: it didn't do very well. Why? Because kids have no idea who these characters are and it doesn't appeal to them compared to what they watch currently. Again, Rugrats and Hey Arnold are wonderful shows. But they were products of their time and there are some aspects that haven't aged very well. They should just stay in the 90s. This is exactly why The Simpsons lost steam eventually. Its entire existence is so rooted in 90s culture, but it's been on for so long that now it's in its own little bubble detached from the rest of the world in real life.

Is it just me, or does this "reboot everything" mentality seem kind of elitist. From Smurfs to Alvin and the Chipmunks, people seem to act like "oh the kids NEED to have their own version of it," as if what they grew up with is automatically superior to anything original that might be made for kids now. I don't have a problem with introducing a newer generation to older properties, but it feels like some people are acting like anything made before the turn of the century is instantly more important than anything else.

People have been doing that forever. If the parents actually wanted to show their kids the shows they enjoyed in their youth, they would buy the DVD sets or call Nick and ask for them to air on the NickToons Network or something. I think the case is that movie execs realize that parents will let kids see movies based on childhood franchises instead of new products because they're familiar. It's not because the parents miss the shows; it's that they know what it is so they're not afraid it's going to shock anyone.

I feel a Rugrats live action remake is going to be filled to the brim with fart jokes and god awful references. I think it would’ve been an interesting idea to make the Rugrats as adults and maybe they have kids of their own. Maybe their kids are like the Rugrats and go on adventures as well. I mean, the whole turning kids into babies or adults into kids trend really should be dead, yet I feel it would be a nice revival for Rugrats. It shouldn’t have to be a series either. Even a small TV movie about the adult Rugrats would be satisfying. That’s just my opinion though.

Maybe it's cheaper to animate one CG character than to make a fully-animated feature film? Maybe not. Live action movies based on cartoons are almost never good, usually a total swindle for families because artsy film buffs have entirely the wrong opinion on animation: it's a medium, not a genre, so it shouldn't be an Oscar category. Tangent aside, I have no expectations for this. If you're in the same boat, then don't watch it.

I'm starting to really hate the *introduce X to a NEW GENERATION* trend now because the inevitable NG they're shooting for often happens to be whiny defenders of the thing (PPG 2016, TTG, She-Ra, possibly Daria & Jodie, Thundercats Roar) and literally no one else wanted it in the first place. However, this could go one of two ways: they could go the All Grown Up route and have the OG Rugrats be adults, with the kids being the titular Rugrats or they could just...reboot the thing entirely *BECAUSE WHY NOT?!*

I noticed that shows in the 80's That have been rebooted have performed well like voltron, mlp, transformers, etc. And that shows from the 90's have been hit and miss so like you I'm very skeptical of the reboot is going to be successful. Like don't get me wrong I loved Rugrats as a child and an adult but cgi characters in a live action movie just gives me spongebob 2 shudders. And this is obv an attempt to cash grab those 90s kids but I'm hoping that they make the show welcome for new comers and not alienate viewers

TheImaginative Artist also, everything is a cash grab. also. do some research. nick has been mentioning bringing the series back since 2012. they just wanted the full creative team back. now if nick pulled a power puff girls 2016, then thats a cash grab. but just because an old property gets brought back, doesn't mean its a cash grab. every thing in entertainment is a cash grab. nothing is put out for love. sure the writers do it for the love, but its also a business. rugrats was the biggest cartoon in the 90s, makes sense to revive it than let it sit there
@ferricbro7847
@ferricbro7847 6 жыл бұрын
80s cartoons like the ones you referenced are more about the concept and relied on selling toys than telling stories, so any reboots of those shows had a lot more room to be a unique version of the franchise. 90s cartoons on the other hand were much more creator driven. Stories and characters were made specifically by the show's creator, because of their artistic vision. A reboot that captures the vision and feel that the original show was going for is incredibly more difficult. Even shows like Spongebob, which aren't even reboots, struggle to keep the vision and feeling that their own show had without the creator working closely on the show.
@RyanStorey1231
@RyanStorey1231 6 жыл бұрын
It's also worth noting that there are some shows from the 90s that should just stay in the 90s. I noticed this with Hey Arnold: The Jungle Movie. While I was super happy to see this movie finally get made and that it concluded a story arc that had been left hanging for over a decade, it did remind me why this show wouldn't work today. They had to really work around obvious things like cell phones being a thing instead of beepers. It was really awkward. Hey Arnold and Rugrats were great shows, but since they were slice-of-life shows set in the real world, there are things in the shows that date them to a modern audience. It just doesn't make sense to continue them today. These shows were built around the culture of the time period they were made in, and remaking them today wouldn't appeal to kids or the adults who grew up watching them the same way. 80s cartoons are easier because they were fantastical, which always ages better, and they were cheap toy commercials, so there was more room to improve things.

If it's a reboot of Rugrats I'm not really interested. Rugrats and All Grown Up both felt like products of their times and should be left as is. Just run reruns. I'm not against reboots but I seriously don't see why Rugrats needs a reboot to begin with. Though I will admit, if you had the babies as adults and made the reboot about the kids of the kids that could be interesting if it keeps the same sort of humor and spirit that the original had. Set it in the modern day and you have a possibility for a few new ideas lol.

Nick could have their cake and eat it too, going that route. They can bring back the older viewers who will appreciate the adult's perspective with the old characters, and new viewers can have brand new characters they can grow up with. They could easily replace the voice cast as well and it would totally make sense, since they're all adults now.

But yeah; My Life is a Teenage Robot was something that didn't seem as big as some other cartoons and seemed to have ended before it was ready, but even so it would be a old cartoon that people who are adults now will be like oh yeah I know that cartoon I watched it all the time! Or oh yeah I vaguely remember that cartoon, I watched it every now and then. Something like My Life as a Teenage Robot getting rebooted would make a little more sense, especially since there's a lot of untapped potential, but with something like Rugrats that had 10 seasons, like three movies and a spin off All Grown Up, it just doesn't need rebooted. (As much as I love Rugrats). Now if it was like Rugrats but the Rugrats are adults and have kids of their own and we are following their kids. (That would take time getting used to honestly) but at least that would be something a bit different if that's the way they plan on doing Rugrats. (Which I doubt it is).

To be honest, I don't hate the idea of rebooting old shows. Actually I think it's a great idea. There are a lot of shows out there that I enjoyed watching as a kid that I would love too see again. However at the same time I hate the direction that they are taken in. Teen Titans Go and Powerpuff Girls being some of the worst offenders. I tried showing my nieces and nephews the old versions of those shows and they told me how awful they thought the old ones were compared to the newer versions. I disagree of course and even though I know Rugrats will probably be bastardized, I look forward to seeing it. And if it comes out awful, well no harm done, I'm already an adult so a bad cartoon reboot won't affect me much. The only impact these reboots have on me personally is that my nieces and nephews will be pissed off at me because I will be changing the channel. Anyways thank you PieGuyRulz for keeping my updated on all the animation news that I need to sound intelligent when talking to other cartoon lovers. ^.^

Honestly, if the Powerpuff Girls reboot didn't last, I doubt a CGI Rugrats will stand a chance unless the writing is strong enough to keep a teen or child audience. But I honestly can't really see a ton of kids watching this new Rugrats today. If adults watch it and love it and watch it with their kids then maybe it will have some audience, but like I said, I can't see it doing much better than the new Powerpuff Girls unless the writing is amazing.

Runningon Cylinders unfortunately, you're right. How do you know? But yes, you're right about that. Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy the first three seasons, but I felt the later ones had more interesting episodes, Angelica was more likable (I couldn't stand her in the first three seasons), I liked Kimi, and overall, they were more fun. The only complaints I ever really see about the later seasons is Flanderization of the baby talk and the reduced hidden adult jokes, which aren't really a big deal to me.
@brianlevine871

I like the idea you mentioned about Tommy and co. as adults and having their own kids. That's the only way I could see a "Rugrats" revival work and it would be nice to see how much these beloved characters have grown, kind of like what "All Grown Up" did with them as preteens (even if I didn't care for that show). Outside of that, no. While I'm okay with reboots/revivals of older properties, they need to have a good reason for bringing back said property aside from money and nostalgia. Or screwing with their own IPs like how CN is handling their biggest ones. If it's something that wasn't able to finish a storyline, like "Samurai Jack" and "Hey Arnold," then a revival is necessary to conclude them. If somebody has an interesting idea for a reboot of an older series, like "Ducktales" or "Ninja Turtles," then feel free to make it. Just make sure it works both on its own and as a part of said franchise. "Rugrats" already ran its course and it doesn't need more episodes, let alone another show. And I don't even want to think about that 'movie' they're making.

Shows that could come back: Invader Zim (sorta coming back, but it's just one movie) Wander Over Yonder (a recent one, but it got canned and the people behind it still had stories left to tell) Dan Vs. (canned, I feel it could've easily gone on another few seasons) Gravity Falls (I wouldn't want this to come back, but if it did, there's definitely enough material to make new stories with it) Hey Arnold (it got a really good run and a movie to end things off, but if it did come back, it probably wouldn't suck) The Flintstones (I would actually love to see a reboot for this. It's old enough and hasn't aged very well, unlike most reboots it would actually make sense to reintroduce it to a new audience)

There are some shows from the 90s that should just stay in the 90s. I noticed this with Hey Arnold: The Jungle Movie. While I was super happy to see this movie finally get made and conclude a story arc that had been left hanging for over a decade, it did remind me why this show wouldn't work today.

This is going to sound off topic, but does anyone remember when Hannah Barbara did The Jetsons reboot version in the 80s? It was basically a kid-friendlier version of the 1960s show. Thankfully, it wasn't all that bad as reboots like TTG, and PPG(2016) are. Unfortunately, the sole purpose of the reboot at the time was to make money, and sell toys, just like the reboots we have nowadays. With this upcoming Rugrats reboot, I am hoping to god that the quality will still be good, although I doubt it. Probably be another nostalgia cash-in. However, I have no hopes for the live action film of this.
@thenostalgicyoshi7149

I personally enjoyed the show when I was younger, and I'm all for CGI but I'm still a bit skeptical about it. Firstly I don't really trust reboots. Yeah some of them aren't terrible, but they heavily ruin the shows that ARE, like Teen Titans, PPG and the Magic School Bus. I'd rather show the older show to the future generation rather than having them lose faith in the franchise as a whole because they only know the NEW shows (if it ends up sucking). And second, I really hope they don't cut off characters. Unless they end up making the original kids adults, that would be the only logical way to cut off characters. But if they don't end up doing that, it's very likely to become a disaster if they cut off characters. If the original Rugrats have kids of their own, THOSE kids can be the main characters and I think that's the only way they can bring an original Rugrats vibe to it (unless of course they ruin it). Finally, I'm surprised Nickelodeon wanted TWENTY SIX episodes for it AND a movie. It is a bit much for a revival, I'd wait for a successful point to make this much. Maybe thirteen episodes to start off instead of twenty six. Overall, I'm afraid they're going to ruin the franchise (since the spinoffs weren't well received). The original will always be in my heart though.

I hope this live action movie doesn't happen. Omg. Just reading about it made me cringe. I don't think this will succeed in the long run. I know a lot of people wanted Rugrats back on the air, but no one I can recall actually wanted it back in production. This is a series that got so stale they had to make a spinoff which was, to put nicely, boring. I just don't know anyone who was calling for new episodes, so I don't see this getting much hype for it to live long.

It feels like too much time has passed between Rugrats (and its attempted spinoffs) for this to really work. The original was cancelled in 2004, the Tales from the Crib released its last DVD in 2006, All Grown up was cancelled in August 2008, Preschool Daze was cancelled in December 2008 (after flopping) and I hardly ever remember Rugrats being rerun on Nick since then. Granted, I haven't watched Nick since about 2012-13, but I never remembered seeing Rugrats or All Grown Up after around that time. Nostalgia is really all its got at this point, as I can't imagine many kids who watch Nick would even know this show (unless they had a particular interest in 90s cartoons) and changing it to CGI (which isn't needed at all) wouldn't exactly bring back much memories. It isn't like Scooby Doo, which has been introduced from generation to generation. Just a few years back, it almost seemed like Rugrats was falling into the sands of time. Also, with regards to the Powerpuff Girls, it felt like it was rerun much more often and much more recently than Rugrats.
