I remember hearing that it was proposed to abolish double consonants in Russian as they have no effect on pronounciation (as they sometimes do in other languages) but that would have meant changing the spelling of "Коммунизм", and the Communists could not buy into that.

I just got this recommended to me and you seem like a really underrated channel at the moment. As someone who is also trying to learn Russian, I have some questions for you. What about Russian interests you to learn it? What are some learning habits you would recommend to someone wanting to learn Russian? After this 4-part series, what other content do you plan on uploading? I like the way you narrate and your incorporation of elements that keeps me intrigued for more. I wish you the best as you progress through your KZbin journey, and I'm excited for wherever you choose to take this channel.
@miiiiiiiiiiii
@miiiiiiiiiiii 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your lovely comment) you're too kind. As to your questions: -Even though I've always been intrigued by Russian and Russia itself , I only truly fell in love with the language through its music. I personally think music is one of the best ways to learn languages as it keeps us excited and motivated) -Learning habits mm.. see, a lot of people think they can cut corners and take shortcuts when it comes to language acquisition but that sadly seems to be impossible. I believe it's all about how motivated you are to succeed, how many hours of active studying you put into it and how dilligent and dedicated you are to go all the way). Consistency is incredibly important, but most importantly it shouldn't feel like a chore, which it won't if it's truly something you love doing. My personal "routine" is that I dedicate an hour a day to Russian, occasionally 2h if I include Old Church Slavonic or Old East Slavic. -I'm currently working on several videos actually haha, one of which is part 3 of the 1917 series. The others are on some very interesting Old Church Slavonic features and some intriguing Russian etymologies, one of which will I'll release very soon) History and Linguistics (and a combination of the two) deserve a lot more love and I hope that I can do it some justice by making these topics more approachable and sharing my passion with everyone. Currently the channel focuses heavily on the Slavic languages but I hope to include other languages in the future! Thank you for taking the time to watch my video and being so kind!

Dat retail version of Russian is for casuals. With all those QoL changes, like spaces, commas, dashes and other "punctuation" addons. In Vanilla Russian, the Classic Slavonic, every letter had a name and periods were for noobs :) The leveling process actually mattered, since you had to spend at least a year to learn all the letters and get the hang of using them. Those darn developers have removed lots of features like tonization marks, the letter Ѣ (which is Ѣpic by default), and extra plural forms! Not to mention the scale of case pruning, there used to be much more of them.

I think there should be another spelling reform, although this is mostly personal ranting: it bothers me that ь doesn't do anything after ж and ш (besides marking gender) and that many е's in loanwords are actually pronounced like э. (Эн"э"ргия, шед"э"вр и так далее) That being said, I look forward to your further videos!

3:40 In modern Russian, we never spell words out loud by the names of the letters. We spell them by syllables stressing each syllable. E.g., хорошо (ok, good) is pronounced harashó (or ha-ra-SHAW for English speakers) but when you spell it you just say hó-ró-shó (HAW-RAW-SHAW). This suffices for most purposes with more or less familiar words. Sometimes we just clarify one or two letters (хорошо - it’s all о’s). Over the phone we sometimes spell out words using common words (names of people, cities, countries etc) if the word is quite unusual like foreign names: Саймон (Simon) would be spelt like Scotland, Amsterdam, York, Milano, Oregon, Niagara (ай reads eye). Learners of English are usually taught to spell words letter by letter. But most will use the Russian way of spelling by syllables: Simon (SEE-MON), night (NEEG-HT), bicycle (BEE-KOOK-LEH) etc. Actual spelling of English words by syllables is not standardized of course. Everyone uses their own "syllabary" just as a tool to recall the actual spelling. ... Peace! I wish all of us peace!

When you mentioned ы being called "еры," it blew my mind because I remember seeing that somewhere in a Russian textbook years and years ago, and being so confused by it. I don't know how old a book would have to be to include that as its name, but I definitely had a buried memory of seeing it described that way.
