One of the problems with those carbs, especially after having stood for a while, is that they need a touch of oil in them. Unscrew the black caps on the tops, pull out the rod and plunger, then put in some light engine oil. That should free things up.

The MG community is pretty solid and is always willing to lend a hand and answer any technical questions. Feel free to reach out to me if you need anything! Also - the twin SU carbs work in tandem, not as a primary/secondary setup. You’ll need to balance them out and sync them up to get them dialed in. Once they are dialed in though, it’s a simple and hard to beat carb setup.

Glad to see you are restoring yet another forgotten MGB. To clear up a few comments. 1st, these are not rare cars. Over 500K produced from 1963 - 1991 with 300K shipped to North America. Your car is a late 1974 model which was changed mid-year to rubber bumpers to meet US safety standards. Early 74 models still had the chrome bumpers. SU carburetors are common on British cars and extremely reliable when properly tuned. A good reference to the history of these cars can be found at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MG_MGB I look forward to following the progress of this project.

Step 1: Rebuild the carbs. Like you mentioned, you should only need the parts that are broken, but the complete rebuild kits are 1/6 the price of a whole new SU HIF4 carb. Mentioned previously in chat, these carbs are designed to work in tandem. The amount of air being allowed into each needs be synchronized. Step 2: Fuel delivery. I just finished rebuilding the trunk and fuel tank. Let me know if you have any questions. reddit.com/r/MorrisGarages will have all the answers youll seek. Built Offical, have you done any research on the MGB you tube sites. For parts you might join and look for the BMC company who specializes in MGAs and Bs. The easiest engine swap appears to be a 3.4 L 93 to 95 Camaro V6 with a 5 speed or auto. Google it. Lots of good info. I have just bought an 80 B roadster with the only rust I can find is a small amount near the drivers feet. I also purchase a 95 Camaro with the 3.4 and 5 spd for $300. Engine runs and trans shifts. The amazing thing the body panels on the Camaro are straight and rust free. Anyone need Camaro parts for 24 Hours of Lemons in East Texas?
@nomercy45214 жыл бұрын
I literally just bought a 1971 white MGB GT 3 weeks ago that the plate has a 91 sticker on. Some parts are in better shape than yours, and other parts are in worse shape. Not running or driving. I got it running really well last week and all the brakes working, now I'm trying to get the transmission system squared away so I can drive it. I loved the RWB reference at the end. It's what I want to do to mine. Looking into how to make my GT into a 5 lung and doing a v6 engine swap. I would love to put in the Ford Ecoboost, but not sure I can find that for a reasonable price.

Now this is the kind of content I like to see! It always saddens me as a Brit that most MGBs were exported to America, far less in the UK now. But my dream project is also an MGB GT :D
@briancorrigan53504 жыл бұрын
I owned a 72 MGB-GT in the early 90s. Rebuilt the engine .040 over, Daily driver from Queens into Manhattan down by South Street. On a quiet night though you could hear it rust. Finally tackled the body. Dropped the entire driveline, and modified two cheap harbor freight engine stands to make a low budget rotisserie. The sills are a 5 piece design. Yours are shot, they all are shot. They come frrom the factory that way. I bought a Mig welder from Costco and replaced all of it, and the floors and supporting crossmembers and bottoms of fenders and on and on. Zinc rich epoxy primered the hell out of it, All of the sheetmetal for this car is still available from Moss Motors, Victoria British, NorthWest Imports, and there are a bunch of others. Your year got hit with the fugly stick by way of increased ride height and big ugly rubber bumpers to meet US federal crash standards. You can do a chrome bumper swap if you like. I believe it requires new front fenders though, and maybe a crossmember...I'm a little fuzzy on that. Eventually I swapped in a 3.4 liter V6 from and early 90s Camaro, a T5 box and a Haltech E6K. Great looking car. A Publication called Practical Classics (in england) did a great series on a full restoration of a BGT in their magazines and then compiled it into a stand alone book. Mine is still in the garage library somewhere. The MGB Experience is a great website and forum where you will find lots of engine swap ideas. Ecotecs seem to be the thing now. It is a great GT car for a long drive on backroad highways. The suspension is prehistoric with a gizmo called lever arm dampers up front and leaf spring and live axle in the rear. And drum brakes out back. Bill Guzman in California makes a complete front and rear suspension swap for the car to something modern if you want to resto-mod it. Ther is another outfit that does aas well, blanking on the name,,,something "Fast". The full amperage of the headlights runs through the rocker switch on the dash . The contacts on the switch will pit and stop working if you ae lucky, burn if you are not. Check it. Better yet, put some realys near the headlights and use the switch to trigger the relays with low amps rather than power the headlights directly. Whack the fuel pump with a rubber mallet if it stops working. It has a set of points inside and they hang up/get pitted. Better still, new lines and a modern low pressure fuel pump for a carb'd engine for small money from Summit or Jegs, That engine is HEAVY for what it is, all thick cast iron. Yours may be lower compression than the pre EPA versions. Lowering compression was one way to get early 70s cars to pass US emissions standards which just started at the time. It's why all the early 70s cars are so gutless. If you are looking for ideas, don't overpower it with a V8. It's not the power but the weight that makes them a pig. A high power high revving four is more in keeping with the nature of the beast, and it won't ruin the balance. The MG handled better than it should considering the lowly specs because its secret weapon was light weight and a rigid chassis. The V6 swap I did weighed in about the same or less than the original 4 cylinder since it had aluminum heads and modern thin wall casting of the block. The racing versions had bumper deletes adn wide flares, a pretty cool look if you know anyone into flares. Good luck with the build. The rust is the killer.

Well Kaleb, those are SU carbs and they are supposed to open together for performance. Very simple and very efficient when they are working properly. They are used on a lot of imports for the more sports type trim. Usually the pintle and diaphram need cleaning and the jets are larger depending on the size of the engine.

The car is fitted with a pair of SU HIF 4 carburettors, HIF standing for horizontal integral float, the carbs are linked and balanced so when you operate the throttle they both open at the same time. You basically have a carb per two cylinders. The SU’s are easy to restore and set up. If going for an engine swap go for the Rover V8 option, it’s an easy conversation. An interesting conversion back in the UK is fitting a Rover T16 engine, which is an in-line 4 cylinder 16 valve OHC engine which puts out about 145bhp, but even better is the Turbo option which pushes it up to 200bhp!

@FlesHBoX4 жыл бұрын
With the amount of rust there, I really think your best bet is going to be a full strip down. Tear out everything, maybe even down to bare metal, cut out and replace the really bad stuff, and patch up the smaller tumors. As for engine, as much as I love the i6, I say stay with a 4 cylinder. Maybe see if you can find an NC mx5 1.8 or 2.0 engine for it. As light as those things are, you don't need silly HP numbers. 250 wheel would make that a ridiculous amount of fun, which is achievable with a turbo on those engines. If you REALLY want an i6, go NA 1J. Also, you might look into having the stock seats reupholstered (or maybe even learning to do it yourself). It depends on whether the frames are still good, or if they've started to rot as well, but it would be cool to retain the stock look of the interior.

So on your SU carbs, if you look at the full intake system you should be able to tell that each carb runs 2 cylinders. So they both operate at the same time and you do have to tune and balance the carbs together, something I've seen a lot of on older motorcycles. Nothing more pain than trying to tune an inline 4 with individual carburetors for each cylinder.

Those carbs do not work in a primary-secondary way as you Americans are accustomed to with fixed-venturi carburettors. Rather, they are two separate carburettors entirely, each feeding two cylinders only, with each cylinder therefore having its own throttlebody.
