This channel is a constant reminder that, as long as you temper your expectations, games can be played just fine on older and / or cheaper hardware. I used to work in a PC repair shop and I once used a 5600G to demonstrate to a client that he didn't need to spend the $4000 that he had for his 10 year old son to play Minecraft and Fortnite. Just as an FYI, I have already seen a test with an Intel iGPU on DDR5 RAM and the performance difference was exactly zero to DDR4. This is obviously down to Intel iGPUs still being glorified video rendering accelerators that cant even use the memory bandwidth they may or may not have access to, but it is still funny that Intel threw together an entire website advertising their chips for gaming down to even suggesting graphics settings for optimum framerates in even relatively modern titles. Even Battlefield 4, which isnt THAT new anymore needs 768p resolution on lowest settings according to them, so they do KNOW on some level, but marketing just keeps advertising their delusions about iGPU performance. I know Vega isnt near as bad in that regard and does benefit from OCed DDR4 RAM but unless there is a significant upgrade to architecture to RDNA2 or something like that I dont see it being able to benefit much from the memory bandwidth either as even OCing DDR4 RAM leads to diminishing returns on Vega chips.

I recently bought one as it was a giveaway price here in the UK at £30, had a couple of bent pins but i soon had those straightened out. I put it in my gaming pc with an RTX 3070FE just to test it and I've been pleased with it. My gaming rig usually runs a 2700X but to be honest I don't play much more than World of Tanks and Red Dead 2. Both games this cpu handles at highest of settings easily. A couple years ago my buddy had an FX-8350 and the mobo died on him. But he was really struggling with funds and couldn't get a replacement or upgrade, so my cousin and I helped him get set up with a decent AM4 board and the 3200G + 16gb ram @ 3200Mhz. He paired it with his previous GPU, which was a 1070, so I can't really speak for the integrated Vega 8 performance. But from a pure CPU standpoint, those 4 Zen+ cores perform pretty well, even with no SMT. I set up a 4.1Ghz all-core OC for him, and the single core performance was basically the same as the R5 2600 I had at the time. Since he primarily played at 1080p I'm sure the 1070 was still being held back a bit, but nowhere near as much as with the old FX CPU. Unfortunately he basically spat in our faces and sold the PC shortly after. Ended up getting an HP laptop with the i5-10300h and 1650 via financing (he's an idiot). While that mobile i5 may have better IPC + more threads (even at a lower TDP), the mobile 1650 is a joke compared to a desktop 1070. And newer laptops like that lack almost any interchangeable parts, aside from ram and storage. What a shame.

You can push a fair bit harder with good power delivery (phases) but at that point why run an old/cheap APU? --- At the end of the day it's really only worth it if you already have a 2400G in a personal system or you're building budget systems and getting the parts really cheaply. I'd love to make a suggestion! When testing Counter Strike: Global Offensive, it is very often the case that playing in 4:3 resolution with full screen stretching is the preferred method of playing the game, especially at a competitive level. Not only does this deliberate reduction in resolution offer a massive frame boost, it offers a genuine competitive advantage as models and geometry appear larger to the eye. There are many videos debating this topic and one that I think would be a useful thing to include when benchmarking the game. Thanks for all your great work!

I got the little brother, the 3 2200g and still rocking it in my pc, although i did put an rx 580 in there a couple months ago. The APU carries me throughout the gpu crisis, I'm planning to upgrade into r5 5600 next year.

honestly think a Ryzen 3 3100 with lower end dedicated GPU is the smarter move than the all in one 2400G at the moment, seen 3100 sell for as cheap as £45 before, also recently pulled a 3100 from a system I upgraded with my old Ryzen 5 3600 and got a mate that I'm selling it to for £50 as he is on an older Intel platform thats on DDR3 and has upgraded it a little but does not want to invest anymore money in to it any more, basically he's just buying a new Motherboard, RAM, Case & PSU and taking his SSD & Hard drive along with a GTX 1050 from the old system, he's not a PC gamer so will be a good jump in spec for him on the cheap. BTW I have the same motherboard in my system that you showed in the video 🤘

I find that these CPUs as well as the 2200g all do at least 4075mhz all core OC and some do up to 4200mhz. As good as the boost algorithms were for the time they leave a lot on the table with these two G series CPUs... it gets rid of the dips due to how slow the clock speed changes were. (dips are terrible if you're not using the ryzen power profile btw)

My first ever DIY computer was based around a 2400G, because I decided to build at the height of a crypto boom and couldn't afford a gpu. After gaming on a 2013 OEM laptop it was like night and day! I could finally play LoL at 1080p 60, and all of my favorite indie games ran like a breeze! But the iGPU would not hold a stable overclock. Maybe it was the motherboard, a cheap ass ASRock ab350 Pro4. I had planned on upgrading to a 580 or 590 once the priced dropped, but I ended up doing a full system upgrade. 2.5 years later I built my first mining rig with it, because the mobo had 6 PCIe slots. Sold the whole thing last summer to another crypto miner for about as much as I paid for it. Funny how things work out.

From digital foundry's video on next gen TW3 it seems it's cpu bound, especially on DX12. So I don't expect the 2400G would do well there as it did a year ago with no next gen update

I snagged a motherboard/ram/cpu combo with a 2400g for 180 bucks off ebay. My 5 year old daughter has expressed interest in minecraft and this setup should be good for that. I can also max out the AM4 socket and drop in a dedicated GPU later if or when she wants to branch out into more intensive games.

I've played and streamed Resident Evil 2 on this very same CPU. A low budget product from 2018 pulling double duty in 2019 AAA title. The low memory bandwidth really puts a strain on the texture quality / resolution... "do you wanna play at 1080p low or 900p high?". But fast paced games - such as Devil May Cry 5 - the 2400G just wont hit 60fps, even at 720p, with dynamic renderer targeting performance!

Hi Dave. I thought, whenever you have to wait for something to arrive, i think it would be a good idea to talk about recycling of hardware. Everyone always buys, but who disposes not working equipment and where at? Food for thought. We will be grateful if you make a talking video about that matter. Merry Christmas, Ho-ho-ho! I was honestly upset when we went from nice linear progrssion of Zen1 plus Vega 11 on 14nm, to Zen+ plus VEga 11 on 12nm, but then when we went to 7nm Zen2 we only got vega 8, at least it was VEGA2 based more on the RADEON VII than Vega64 The 4700G is 50mm² smaller than the 2400G despite having 8 cores, easily enough space for at least Vega 12, but what i would have loved is 6 cores, and Vega 14 would have been a killer APU for work and play

Bought a OEM machine with a 4600G a year ago. Not particularly great value, but GPU prices were still trough the roof back then, I had never built a machine myself and I wanted/needed a machine right then. Have been pretty happy with it overall, even with all the usual OEM caveats like insufficient RAM and middling PSU. Has been an okay introduction to desktops after so long and been fine with light gaming. 5600G would obviously be a better processor, but 4600G is still nice for my purposes.

hey, I would probably advise testing 1280x960 in CS:GO on cheaper hardware like this. I believe it's the most popular resolution used ("stretched res") and could show whether the APU is useful for the purpose of CSGO (+ Valorant) alone, or whether the CPU power would be enough to complement a drop-in GPU in the future. Local botmatches are also a poor representation of performance given they're disproportionately CPU-heavy, but online deathmatches like you use now are probably close enough to regular games. Love your videos by the way, have been subscribed for a long time :)

2200G & 2400G were great iGPUs back in their days but given that they are from the first gen Zen architecture, which does not support Windows 11 officially (but 4C/4T Ryzen 3 2300X could due to Zen+), those chipsets nowadays are best left for office productivity & some light gaming sessions. Go with 5600G & 5700G chipsets if you are into iGPU-only gaming PCs.

BTW, not sure if this is useful information to you or not, but: Those red on-screen flickers on first-gen Zen and Zen+ indicate RAM instability. These older AM4 chips, especially the OG Zen architecture, has a memory controller that REALLY sucks and doesn't like high frequencies. Anything above 3000 MHz is more or less a gamble. Loose timings don't really help and neither does higher voltage - which you can't really set independently anyways because it's tied to SoC voltage. Bottom line: lower the frequency and try to clean up the timings as much as possible.

i still remember owning one before..tho i paired it with a 1060 3gb...amazing how it could run gta 5 and sekiro as good as the 1060 altho at normal settings while the 1060 runs the game on max settings...overclocking the ram to 3600mhz(i was using a single channel 8gb 2666mhz kingston valueram at the time) improved the framerate for quite bit and increased the 1%. For me it's quite amazing to see how much it could do just by itself. With the 1060...ac unity runs pretty well tho.👌
