I know the owner very well. Dave Selvaggio….hence the DS. I’ve known him from the time before DSarms when he ran a small add in Shotgun News. I’d buy FN FAL’s from him on a regular basis. He became known as the FN guy in the 80/90’s. Anyway he swears the cast receiver is as good if not better than the forged. It all depends on the metallurgy and how it’s hardened. I’ve had chances to get either from him and stuck with casting. Just giving you his opinion! Thank you for sharing this video.

Well of course he'd tell you that, the castings have better margins!

Yep, he and I know some of the same people. The FAL world wasn't too huge back in the day. I was lucky enough to enter in while things were still pretty good. 5-10 years later and I would have missed so many good deals and good people.

I got a jungle warrior para when they were first released and absolutely love it. The short barrel and aluminum lower + para stock make it *so* much more handy than my stg58. It’s the 50.63 that FN should have made. It’s possibly my favorite rifle.

About the Cold Warrior. Most FALs don’t have chrome lined barrels, they can come with or without the carrying handle, I have one with it, and installing a bipod is quick and simple, they can be obtained much cheaper than DSA’s price. What I would change in that model are the rear sight and the charging handle for more classic versions.

I like my FALs imported and made under FN contract. I don't think DSA ever got an FN contract because as far as I can tell, most of their guns are parts kit builds. Since there are no more new imports coming in to the USA, I have used DSA upper receivers to finish a couple of my parts kit builds but I bought them when they were all machined from billet, not cast. I'm sure the DSA billet receivers are ok but I would rather have Belgian. I think a billet DSA receiver might be a little better than an Imbel type 3 which I think is the induction hardened casting but signed off by FN. I would not want to buy a cast receiver that wasn't made under FN contract. Maybe that's silly but if you buy an expensive parts kit, why put it on a budget receiver? So I've got Imbel, Argentine, Israeli and DSA. I would have bought Belgian or Austrian but I lived in California where they were named "assault weapons" and now I think I'm priced out of that market. There are British, Canadian and Australian but they actually trained so the parts kits were not nice and inch uppers were hard to find so none for me.
@misha56707 ай бұрын
Imbels were forged. DSA does both cast and forged today. DSA never had a contract, but they did purchase tooling, tech-specs, and parts from Steyr. They acquired the entire STG58 productionline, which started off originally from Belgium. DSA is the only official, gov't contract holding manufacturer of FALs in the world today. Its a similar situation to CSA in Czech Republic with the SA VZ58. We have no more FAL imports because no one is still manufacturing new ones out there in the world. Sad I know.
@beardoe68747 ай бұрын
@@misha5670 we have no more imports because Obama made a semi-auto import ban. With no commercial market and very few military customers all of the licensed manufacturers shut down... I get why there are no military customers, the FAL was the high water mark of the old school metal and wood main battle rifle. Militaries have moved on to intermediate cartridge assault rifles or full size rifles with better accuracy potential for DMR type roles. There was potential for a huge commercial market in the USA but the machinegun ban stopped the full auto imports and not all of the manufacturers made US legal semi-auto versions. The last ones standing were Imbel, Argentine and Lithgow I think but I don't think Lithgow imported too many, I'm not sure why. Any way, I look at FALs and other military surplus rifles and the FAL makes almost everything look silly or crude, even the M1A.
@misha56706 ай бұрын
@@beardoe6874 What Obama semi-auto ban are you talkikng about?
@beardoe68746 ай бұрын
@@misha5670 my bad, it was JW Bush's ATF that banned the import of "non sporting" receivers. In light of Bruen regulating commonly available arms might be unconstitutional since FALs are not dangerous and unusual. Any way one day things changed and the 6 Imbel.uppers I had on order for $189 each became 2 delivered for $249 each. After that it was all DSA and Coonan. Maybe Entreprise was still making uppers but by that time it was really unclear what you would get from them. For me that made DSA the only remaining option. As you can tell I got in to FALs just a little too late. By that time only Imbel and Rhodesian parts kits were cheap. My Imbel recievers were from the last batch that made it in and I was both price gouged and screwed out of 4 recievers I ordered. If I had started collecting a year earlier I would have gotten my recievers at MSRP and probably better deals on several parts kits, more South African battle packs, etc.
@misha56706 ай бұрын
@@beardoe6874 Semi-autos weren't banned, but in 1998 Bill Clinton made an amendment/addition/clarification to GH Bush's 1989 EO banning importation of "assault rifles". Basically, Clinton said that imports could no longer readily accept "high capacity" magazines. Thus lowcap magwells became a thing in the 21st century. GW Bush was responsible for the barrel ban in 2005, at least his ATF under the Exec branch made that change. None of this will get overturned in court. Why? because the Constitution does not give us any 'rights' when it comes to imports or importation. Basically, all imports are considered a privlage only and thus can be regulated or blocked without much muss or fuss.

I'd be more comfortable with a none-chromed barrel than a cast receiver. Just clean it and the barrel will last for a reasonable round count.
