Status is a welcomed by product for many but not the main goal. Self esteem seeking is far more prevalent than status seeking but often confused with each other. Based on your culture various forms of status can be used to attain that self esteem through said status validation. Everyone is trying to achieve their own full potential and the more people and cultures you experience you will understand that the majority of people are not this crude outward status seeking. They are self esteem seeking and full potential seeking and position and status is an overused tool in the attempt to achieve these

@@MrJREllmanI disagree. If that would be the case, certain psychological issues and even issues concerning contentment/happiness would be near non-existent in high-status people, which is not the case at all. You miss the point. What causes one to feel compelled to seek self-esteem in the first place. That compulsion to seek self-esteem is great, but the decision made by one's subconscious mind to feel that feeling in the first place is motivated by social status because there are only three motivators that were selected for by evolution: personal survival, social status, and progeny.

01:03:51 - "tools are a very small part of what occupies your mind", and then he goes on to say you spend most of your brain power thinking about social conflicts. I don't know about anyone else, but I can say for myself, my mind spends any spare minute thinking about objects, tools, work, and tasks. Unless someone is in front of me, I'm not usually dwelling on how they feel about me.

Interesting, lifestyle and personal persuasions have to play an impact. That said, paramedics have to train themselves to focus on the task at hand rather than the person who is in pain in front of them. Closer to home and more day-to-day, if we are upset its very hard to be creative,productive, or clear the event from our mind. So we can us focus as an inverse measure of how upset we are/ how much energy our brain is putting in to something. I love things/tools as well, but even when they don’t do what I want I don’t get anywhere near as upset in hours of working with them as I can at a family member who is annoying for 10 seconds or my boss if I feel he has slighted me. TLDR: (tools) stuff that doesn’t work gets me interested and I move on; dysfunctional relationships (people) capture my attention. People have a much larger impact on my disposition than things do and that could be just my persuasion.

My theory on meaning is that it's an emotional reward (similar to happiness) that occurs whenever we perceive ourselves doing something hard in the service of pursuing our highest values. Evolutionary, this might make sense since it allows us to sacrifice our time/energy/resources today for the promise of a better tomorrow. So with that being said, if meaning requires undergoing difficulty or struggle, it would be exhausting to try to optimize life for maximal meaning because then you would feel like you're struggling constantly (even if the struggle does feel good). I think that would work for people with David Goggins-esque personalities, but I think for most people, occasional meaning (just like with occasional happiness) is the ideal instead of the be-all, end-all. I totally agree with your take on inner peace being essential to a life well lived.

The issue with knowing the game of status seeking in modernity with abstracts is that is divorced from sincerity and the older notion of identity formation involving inhabited sincerity such as a job or doing a specific thing. Check out notions of profilicity and the new world in relation to sincerity'- it explains a lot between the ways we live in windows of representation made to describe sincerity that is made to look like authenticity.

So ... following Mr Pinsof's logic he himself came up with his ideas in order to gain status by appearing unconventional and a bit outrageous and not for the sake of knowledge. Him acting all blazé and humble is just to cloak even from himself his craving for status. I scratch my head and ask myself why he says everything is bullshit. On the other hand he might be right. It crossed my mind while listening to this episode 😂 Of course I write this just for status's sake... And it doesn't work because I know it. Well. I will admit that I found this episode rather less useful. Some claims seemed rather coming out of the blue. The picture he is painting there seems a bit simple. And when it comes to answers to complex problems, simple answer are most of the time inadequate. And on occasions they are just bullshit. ;)

Yeah, I started out interested in what he had to say, but by the end, it's obviously mostly a way for him to somehow cover up his shit worldview and outlook on life. The arguments are falacious and self-serving as well (as I've pointed out above). He's found himself sort of a Betty Crocker set-it-and-forget it metaphysical model so he never has to think about anything ever again. Just run it through the evolutionary psych lens and you're thinking done. He's a load of bullshit.
@bazx6466
@bazx6466 Жыл бұрын
Well, he obviously studies this as part of whatever status-attaining arbitrary and random reason he does so; he has an interest in psychology and it serves his life in beneficial ways. The first 15 seconds of this generally are bullshit or less candid than in reality to make his point; "We don't really know the true reasons for why we do things."; yes, we aren't omniscient to account for the numerous factors and impulses, but we can have a best guess and say that any evolution of the social paradoxical reasoning for doing things is driven by our baser instincts and how we our influenced in a society. We function to survive, to live; whatever that entails...we can rationalize anything to be a worthwhile 'existentialist' reason for living, regardless of whether it has any objective, or ideologically contradictory basis. You said "And when it comes to answers to complex problems, simple answer are most of the time inadequate"- ESPECIALLY for someone who is an academic and publicly preaching this information. I can't say for certain if he is condensing this information to make it more palatable, but people aren't stupid, and if they are, then the relay of information naturally becomes a regurgitation of what you originally said with or without the complexity and depth with which you relay it.
@brek5
@brek5 Жыл бұрын
@@bazx6466 Well, the other thing (reading your response now) that also occurred to me but especially now is his seemingly smug assumption that people can't reflect on their actions and gain a greater understanding of why they had acted some way (and contrary to what he would say, it's not all some status or reproductive imperative). I think we've all had moments, often negative ones but possibly positive ones, where we've reacted to something, and then later, we go, "Man, why did I react that way?" Then, with a little introspection, we might get to a deeper understanding of ourselves and our motivations, cultural assumptions, etc. that can drive us unthinkingly. I believe we can, and I reject his hypothesis that we are all some sort of biological robots stuck in the programming we definitely do have from biology and culture, among other influences. We also have the ability to learn about ourselves and exert some control over our urges, desires, and motivations to an extent.

Meanwhile acting as if they don’t do the same exact things on a much more unimpressive level. The best thing I can say about status is try your hardest not to care about getting it and continue to achieve as if you did want it and you will get the status and everyone will start acting like a groupie and then you can be turned off and stop wanting to associate with the other people instead of them crucifying you

The idea that we can't be aware of our own status seeking, or other people can't be aware, or that any status game will collapse if people think about it... it's all false. It's not a claim that is based on anything or has evidence to back it up. The claim just seems true until you experience counter-examples in yourself or others. It's easiest to admit to people that you are improving yourself to gain status when you are also comfortable admitting you are low status. I also think you would be surprised at, e.g., how many students enter med school and will admit that the status of profession was a motivating factor. Half of this episode was very hard to listen to because of how "absolute" this one wrong claim was.

This eps is one of the great ones. I had been thinking about this "what can I give to society? (in boarder scale)". It is essensially for us (most of it). We are entitiled to been seen as important and usefull. It is all for us. That why people do that. I mean if you want to give back to society just silently give foods to homeless people or your neighboor who are stuggling to put foods in their tables or paying rents instead of your name being mentioned coz you are a big donator to a charity or some big comunity. I see people signaling their virtue. We can see in perfomative way so they can gain empathy or seen as important or a saint. If you ask what hunters gatherers value as a status? probably how big animals they can kill. It can be a proof to their society that they are better. Modern society have different things that they see as status or power (such as being a big donator to a church or mosque, etc). The more you think, the more you realize that human beings do what they do because they are driven to what society value. It is no longer about surviving (eating foods to survive) but about how people percieve us. I also aggree on 21:22 about "look how they treat a waiter at a restaurant when they get an order wrong". See how they treat or help people without other people see it. It could be they help giving foods to homeless people or paying his friend rents without telling his other friends. 28:42 "They want to be loved. They want to respected." we, human beings are amazing. 31:52 "It is uncomfortable to admit. Our desires are competitive. We dont just want prople like us but we want people to like us more than they like other people. We dont just want have opinions, we want better opinions than others."

Great insights here. But I think he is ignoring a small but significant demographic. Many people do guage personnel success externally (status hierarchys) but some do so internally, comparing yourself to your past self. Seeing how far you have come. Taking pride in overcoming obstacles. There are pros and cons to both approaches, but I think our society would be healthier if we could promote the inner version a bit more. The solitary, stoic approach of the mountain lion is just at valid as the community approach of a pack of wolves. I think humans can thrive under both paradigms.

This gives me the creeps. I walk instead of driving, status game. I make sure that I am the kind of person who can take care of my parents, status game. I take the effort to plan something nice for my girlfriend, status games. I see it. As I am introspecting I think also about how I cue my status to different groups of people. If I am palling around with a group of young guys my age and someone throws a status jab at me, I have enough confidence to stick my chin out and ask for another. On the other hand, if my girlfriend says something that I simply perceive as a slight, it really bothers me. I am much more sensitive to the stock market candlestick of my day-to-day status with her than of the people that I am actually competing against.

While intellect is sought after wisdom is divine. To be wise is the integration of intelligence to our everyday lives. It's not enough to just know. Living the experience is much more profound. Ask any parent 😂 The pursuit of acceptance of all eventualities. Therein lives happiness and success. When we are no longer triggered by our environment and allow ourselves to wonder what if? Allowing the outcome without fear or judgement. That must be pretty amazing 😘

@bazx6466 The human superiority complex at it again. For all we know in a thousand year more or less they might find out all animals are capable of what we think makes us special, the real difference was we didn't understand other animals because they don't necessarily have the same response and or goal as our clump of cells.... lol! The reality is we bearly understand our own behaviours let alone others, anything from 70% to over 90% of our communication is non verbal, yet our conscious mind doesn't, most people operate on what they think the other person is saying as the 90% of communication.

8:10 You're wrong! Seeking status is NOT low status! It's ONLY low status if it's undeserved status that one is seeking! If one feels that they deserve a status level, then it is merely trying to force others to recognize that one deserves status.

@@moeyyad It's just lying that we don't like. Some status games come with implied rules that you shouldn't be status seeking in the first place, which is why you lose when everyone realizes what you're doing, but in competitive environments or when you're open with your motivations it comes across very differently.

0:10: 😕 Understanding the true reasons for our behavior can be disheartening, but it is possible and can lead to better outcomes. 7:15: 🎭 Status games are inherently fragile and prone to collapsing when the secret of the game is revealed. 14:55: 🤔 The rise of virtue signaling and performative empathy on the internet can be attributed to the unique nature of social media and its impact on our psychology. 21:48: 😮 The speaker discusses how status games and sacred values influence human behavior and how understanding this can lead to more empathy and compassion. 29:11: 🔑 Our desires are competitive and relative, and we constantly compare ourselves to others in order to be better than our competitors. 36:42: 😊 The speaker believes that intergenerational competition is key to prosperity and that markets are a good status game. 43:50: 🤔 The pursuit of happiness is fundamentally implausible and can lead to misery. 49:47: 💡 The pursuit of happiness is not scalable, but the pursuit of meaning and peace of mind are important. 56:16: 🧠 The human brain evolved to navigate social groups, rather than for seeking useful knowledge or truth. 1:03:35: 🧠 Our brains are primarily used for gossiping, politicking, and social interactions rather than practical decision making or tool making. 1:10:18: 🤔 The lesson to take away is that the interesting stuff is overrated and we should seek out more boring things. A very reductionist take, conveniently based on unfalsifiable assumptions. As such it is nothing more than an intellectually appealing narrative, dismissing observations hinting at its incongruence by calling them bullshit for the mere reason that they go against the dogmatic narrative. As with any narrative, a belief in its truthfulness is akin to religious belief.

People who do not want status are not being honest with themselves. The ones that disagree are often playing an awful game, like throwing someone else under a bus to Virtue Signal that the other person is a bad status seeker, but not them. Definitely not them! People simply want status just like they want love.
@rith971
@rith971 Жыл бұрын
What he's saying is that one is truly pursuing a sacred virtue, like truly feeling compelled to save the environment and changing their behaviors to do so, their subconscious mind is generating that 'sacred virtue' compulsion in the first place precisely as a way to increase their social standing because that was selected for in evolution, they just obviously don't know that and don't experience it as 'I'm trying to seek status.' Just like method acting, if you truly believe you are this type of person, you'll sell it more effectively to your peers, so there's no evolutionary benefit to knowing that you're really just interested in social status.

"People who do not want status are not being honest with themselves" Are homosexual secretly heterosexual but not being honest with themselves? seriously man human beings are all different. I know it seems difficult for David Pinsoff and his limited cognitive abilities to wrap his mind around the diversity of the human specie, but some of us like other stuff than "status".

well, he's kind of right but also wrong. for example, I didn't watched this video in search to know more about psychology than other people. I don't even have anyone to talk about these things. I just want to know, I like the o know the truth, to understand why my feelings are someway. he sees everything as an evolutionary element like a competition to be the strongest, but he don't see that somethings have value in itself.

Isn't it possible thar virtues, values, and molarity could actually exist outside of status seeking if they were evolutionarily valuable traits to have??? The value of equality helped the tribe survive, and so people developed a genuine belief in equality. Additionally, the individual is not always the primary concern of evolution. Sometimes the survival of the species is greater than the survival of one individual within the species. Take ants and bees, sometimes individuals in the hive will die in order for the whole hive to succeed.

No, you both seem to be missing the inherent and potential intrinsic opportunity. Use the knowledge to craft your story to at least attempt to become the person with the attributes and characteristics that you believe will be both be fulfilling and result in honing the processes that may result in your achieving the outcomes and lifestyle you want to adapt to adopting. Caveat being this heuristic has not been empirically tested.
