SBMM has been a hotly debated topic in the gaming scene lately. Is it a good thing or bad thing? Honestly I'm not sure but there's something I find really sad about how every casual game seems to have SBMM implemented lately and in this video I wanted to talk about it.

DEF a course it’s ruining PvP I started out with battlefield 1 got frustrated hard cause I was so bad got hooked and now I’m top of the top players 0.1% in D2 I even got top 500 In iron banner started a KZbin channel … mw2 however made me look like I never even played games before every round was 2kd max and it was frustrating I gave that game 30h of playtime and it was not enjoyable … sbmm is dumb and really really shouldn’t be a thing outside of comp modes … also I’m not kidding in mw2 skill based footstep audio exists lmfao

As a fellow counter-strike kid I also loved being in games with pros/really good players and trying to get every advantage/chance I could to frag them. And being able look back now from being a Global Elite or high faceit elo how far you've come is a really nice feeling. I also love educating ppl about cs specifically and those memories definitely are part of why I still love cs. I do also get why more casual gamers want sbmm, because if you only have 2h to play a weekend, you don't necessarily want to spend it getting bhopped and quickscoped over and over again. I wish cod and other games could figure out a middle ground or have clear sbmm modes and no sbmm modes.

As someone who grew up playing fighters like you grew up playing shooters I’d like to see it go in that direction where you have standard connection based lobbies and if you’d like to play against opponents of similar strength with the idea of growing you go into the ranked playlist. SBMM in a casual playlist should be light so new players aren’t getting destroyed but it shouldn’t punish great players either

Personally, I don't like it very much - because I enjoy doing really well in Battlefield 1 for example, where I can tackle multiple opponents due to the difference of the skill level, but I wouldn't really be interested in just going against people on my level - it would turn into hypercompetitive environment, where every little thing matters and a lot of games aren't even build up for that - especially Battlefield, where tons of little technical issues can be blamed all the time, and mechanisms just aren't as tight as with Counter-strike. Which is the problem - with agressive SBMM, I think every shooter turns into very specific "counter-strike like" experience, and I've long decided that Counter-strike isn't the peak of what I enjoy about multiplayer shooters. At the same time, it's perfectly understandable why casuals would prefer it, because if you're somebody who usually does poorly at the game, this just gives you more of a fighting chance. But there will always be winners and losers, and I think you should be rewarded for the hard work you put down, and excited to play the game well. Which I think really gets removed with SBMM - every game becomes too intense, you can't relax, and even if you win, it doesn't feel rewarding, it's as if you got out of a fight and all you got out of it were some broken ribs.

SBMM is the reason I refuse to touch iron banner or control much alone. Doesn't feel rewarding and every fight is a 50/50 chance of living. No thanks.

I wish they could have a competitive playlist with ranks and SBMM and the freeplay playlist with connection based. In the freeplay there should be lobby balancing between games so that the better players get switched from one team to the other, like we had back in UT2004. That way each match is not a rofl-stomp due to unbalanced teams but you het to see better and worse players mixed together

I'mma be real with y'all, I don't notice any difference in my gameplay before and after SBMM. But I hate how top heavy matchmaking is these days. The top players will perform as expected because they're pubstompers meanwhile the bottom players are the equivalent of carrying dead weight.

I remember playing TF2 on my first computer I bought for myself, an ultra cheap laptop. Discovering an FPS config that made my framerate go from ~25 to ~60 was magical. Building my own gaming PC was transcendent. TF2 didn’t have any matchmaking back then. My aim and response times are pretty bad, so getting good meant I had to learn the game and play smarter. New MW2 is the first CoD I’ve really gotten into, so I’m still really bad at it. I can assure you, SBMM doesn’t just suck at the top; it sucks at every level. Interestingly, playing with friends actually improves my lobbies compared to solo play, even though I’m almost always bottom of the scoreboard when playing with them.

As someone who started with FPS games long ago with CoD MW, I completely agree. I had the same experience; when I started I was just terrible and had no idea what I was doing. I had to grind and grind and grind to make improvements, and it felt really good. Now that I mainly play D2, the SBMM is a huge bummer. I don’t get to play against PvP gods and see how they do things, and I have no idea if I’m actually getting any better. I pretty much don’t even care about improving anymore in D2, it’s just mindless explosive space magic at this point anyway.

Agree. Competitive/ranked mode should be SBMM (obviously) Casual mode should not be matched based on skill. If you stick all the newbs together, yeah, maybe they get a calmer first experience, but they don't get any better because they can't know what they don't know. Instead you end up with newb lobbies that never get checked by someone who knows how to play. As you say, the move towards "quick play" rather than picking and choosing servers killed that whole community vibe thing off. Imagine not being able to play poker with your friends because you're too good for the group you're with...

It's not the SBMM but it's the Fortnite-like gameplay all shooters seem to be beheading. It's like the whole gaming industry is on Cocaine.

I understand where youre coming from when you say kids these days cant really measure themselves in the community, especially in games like Call of Duty. Well, to that all I have to say is these days kids have KZbin. Growing up, you and I would know, we didnt really have KZbin... Seeing people upload gaming runs were impossible to find, they only started booming in the last 5-10 years. Also, with games like Call of Duty releasing on consoles, typically it attracts a large "non sweat" playerbase. A lot of people just want to run a game or two after work, or on the weekends. I dont love SBM, but I find it saves a lot of wasted anger especially when youre just trying to wind down after a long day.

I hate this SBMM or EOMM. I always liked to play CoD casual, it was the perfect game for that, but I can’t do it anymore without cheating the system. I have the game on PC and PS4. I join my bot account on PS4 and this gives me matches like in the old days. I don’t have to sweat every game which is nice.

I seriously don't get these people that whine and bitch about SBMM. You know you don't HAVE to sweat during the game? You can just NOT take it seriously and NOT care about winning. It literally doesn't affect you in the slightest losing unless you're playing in the competitive playlist.
