As a former owner and the operator of a semi truck that healed over sized and extremely heavy loads. Dealing with compliance for safety was a daily thing. And when you go above and beyond the safety requirements and when you deal with the men and women who's job is to check for this stuff. Its best to be upfront and open about stuff. Just as Jake was. Because sooner of later you are going to e dealing with these same people again. And having a good working relationship with them is a vital part of the game. Because Jake is 100% correct, There just here doing there job, and to keep these fishermen safe as they do there's.

Yeah, safety starts with you and trust no one, including USCG. When I was younger the Cost Gard was in my Port. The Caption of that ship made the mistake of speeding out of the inner harbor over a emergency. He didn't even use the siren, just the blue light. For anyone that doesn't know, you never leave a wake in the inner harbor. That's how people get hurt by crashing boats. It also doesn't take long to safely leave the inner harbor. Once in the outer harbor, they should be able to give her hell.

The pickups that follow you are driven by some real asshats. They want to take three lanes up on I-95 during the day for a truck that barely overlaps one, and they don't give a shit about the laws regarding the lines on the road.

as a council abnormal loads officer I can confirm this. It's far easier to work with someone who's willing to work with me to make sure a movement is safe. The last thing either of us want is a truck hitting or going through a bridge or causing an accident. If a load is unsafe for a piece of infrastructure then it's unsafe. I've had one incident where a haulier who shall remain nameless has tried to give me a hard time about rejecting a proposed route and all that's achieved is making me less likely to assist in the re-routing process in future cases where issues arise (a courtesy I normally have no issue helping with but not something I'm required to do by law or council policy.)

The difference in how Jake treated his boarding where he was 100% compliant and accommodating is a stark contrast to the episode where Wild Bill got boarded and he turned on the heat just to get them off his ship as fast as possible, and they even called him on it! Inspections are important, it's easy to forget that the boats are workplaces. When things go wrong the crew's lives depend on that equipment to save their lives, and if it's not being maintained by the captain and owner it puts lives at risk. It might seem like a bother, but when a ship goes down and people end up in the water because liferafts are missing, or expired and fail to deploy, people die.

It is their job because if not all the safety gear is there people die. The Bering Straits are the most dangerous sea in the world you go in there you die thats why The Coasties want everything to be secure and every piece of gear is on board remember at the start of season they lost the Scandie Rose and the Destination and Saga does not want to take any chances.

Jake and his boat could have had his season ended if the boarding officer wanted to be a Richard. Now, the not-so-funny thing is, the BO doesn't even need probable cause to pretty much rip his boat apart trying to find a weapon, had he suspected him lying. Now, if Hilstrand had said NO. We would have seen the BO peeing him/herself laughing so hard.

Honestly, the fact that he was so up front about the life raft issue is probably the reason they let him go. If he tried to hide it, or didn't know, they'd send him back because either a) he was lying or b) he was incompetent. The fact that he was honest and already on top of the situation probably gave them the confidence to let him off. Of course, the report is so, if he gets checked again in say a week and still doesn't have the second raft, then he'd be screwed. Important to remember as well, they do these to make sure the ships are safe not just for the crew and captains lives, but their own. We know from similar clips that more often than not its a coast guard officer that gets injured or dies on rescues. They're literally all in this together.

In between times out on the boat, Jake should really give himself time to detox from the stress, do workouts to strengthen his back and fix his posture etc. otherwise he’s gonna turn into a crippled up old man real quick.

He lucked out, there. They could have said, "Nope. Not legal. Go to town." Cause, there's some people who are so by the book and strict that whatever the case, "you're down to one, so go to town," no matter the explanation. But, they understood, since "another one on the way," and they took note of what he said. He lucked out. And that's a lesson for all of us. Since the authority "will find it anyway" like he said, it's better to be honest from the beginning and explain yourself, and let them know that you know what's going on, and let them know what's going on from your perspective. It will be better on you. Even if you're still in trouble, it will be better on you.

I gotta tell ya I wouldn't like to be aboard the ship if, God forbid, something goes wrong and all hope is on that one raft deploying correctly and not popping or capsizing instead of having the choice of two. They have no backup. Kinda feels like they're rolling the dice on this one.

Doesn't work that way with maritime stuff. Normal police etc, sure. But you stay quiet with maritime stuff and they're going to find ways to stop you. Like he said, they're going to notice you only have one raft. Better to let them know straight away. Looks better overall, then a captain not knowing he only has one raft.
