Hi Nike. Just found Untie The Lines! Immediately came to the 1st episode. It is sooo encouraging to see you responding to questions put here by new viewers, today. So, since I have soooo many questions, I am going to hang on to the impulse to start asking them today, believing that you might answer them as the episodes unfold. Karl looks like he was a leap of faith lol. I can't wait to see how you got him seaworthy!

I can appreciate this story. Reminded me of my trip to Fiji from San Francisco to check out and buy a 1985 Tayana 37 with hard dingy, dive compressor and gear, off shore equipment for five people, etc. etc. the list went on and it took a week to negotiate all of the big questions like "will I have to pay 40% duty?" I never did import the boat into Fiji, but it was tricky. I took a chance, I trusted a Fijian woman at Yacht Help, and she pulled us through. I could go on for the next hour. Well, thanks for bringing back all the memories!

Brave decision to buy a boat on the other side of the world. I'm glad it worked out ok. It's a decent size yacht and a little bit of restoration helps put a little bit of you into the boat. If you built or fixed it then you can repair it, essential for a round the world liveaboard.

Found your videos last night and enjoyed everyone! You're a corageous woman whom I admire and for whom wish the very best. There are very few people who would do what you did-buying a boat so far away and then flying into the unknown. I live in Mobile, Alabama and sail my boat along the northern Gulf of Mexico...nothing like what you're experiencing now. Good luck and keep posting the videos...they're very entertaining and interesting.

If you dont mind me asking .. how much did your boat cost and what type / size is it ? Why did you choose panama ? To avoid having to go through the panama canal ? Did you have much sailing experience before you did this ?

I dint know how i first found your channel. It was a long time ago, I feel like I was watching your early videos almost as soon as they came out. I stopped subscribing a few years ago, but recently I bought a used sailboat. I got an incredible deal, partly because I was in the right place at the right time. Only problem with this boat is it was left covered for 5 years, never opened. At least it was on the hard, but any sailboat left untouched for that long will develop mold, no question. So I've been tackling a mold problem, and earlier this evening I was thinking what a big problem I have, and I needed something to give me perspective. I thought of you and this first video which I watched so long ago, when you arrived in Panama and discovered your boat actually had coral growing inside. I watched your video again, and I feel better about the challenge ahead of me, as moldy as the interior of this boat is, yours was worse! Thanks!! PS - I developed a tremendous respect for you, your resourcefulness, your independence, your ability to meet every challenge with intelligence, strength, and determination.

Hehe, well I hope you subscribed again 😜. No, just kidding. You can do it!!! Keep at it, there will be better times ahead. By the way, my boat has been mostly mold free for the past years. Resealing the windows helped immensely and adding some new deck ventilation. Good luck with it all and don’t give up! It’s worth the effort and u will feel you accomplished sth afterwards! (Talking from own experience here as u know 🤣)

To sail the world, the most essential thing you need is a sail boat. I found mine after three years of searching in Shelter Bay, a marina close to Colón in Panama. The first encounter with my boat was...well, a pretty moldy experience. But watch it yourself...

it was more a coincidence. A friend of mine had been there 1,5 years ago to help the previous owner to install a repaired injection pump, so he had seen the boat. And it was a bargain. About a third of the price that I would have paid in Europe. But there are many boats around here for cheap money, also in Guatemala, I think. So it might be worth checking. Although Panama is not so recommendable for fixing, as supplies are pretty bad / expensive...

good luck in finding "the one", I hope you will. For me it was more a pracitcal decision in the end. I looked at so many boats and never had "the one" feeling that so many people talk about. Maybe it was an issue about money, too. Maybe, when you look at more expensive boats, that feeling comes more easily, hehe. But I have come to love my boat anyhow, because it is mine and it gives me the possibility to follow this dream. I am going one way, too. It won't be a circumnavigation, just go with the flow and see how far I come. Maybe I'll see you out there someday :)

Buy a fresh water boat from the Great lakes . Short season so they only see the water for about 5 months , then haul out every single year . Means a bottom inspection and repair if needed as it is not out of sight . Weaker sun too so less UV damage . Not to forget fresh water , rigs never wear out , things don't rust like on salt water so the engine and sail drives do not corrode as bad . Little crevice corrosion too.

Hi ! First of all, forgive my lousy english, it's not my primary language. I just found your youtube channel and, so far, I think it will be very interesting to follow your adventures with your "new" boat. My first question is... do you know that certain kinds of mold (particulary wood molds) are very toxic for your health (particulary in sutch a confine environment) and are impossible to erradicate ? Did you do some researches about that subject to orient you next decisions on what you intend to do for the refit of your boat ? It would be so sad to loose your health while pursuing your dreams. Well, I will immediately go see the rest of your videos. Maybe there is an answer for my questions already.

So this seems to be ur first comment. It's kinda funny cause I read them backwards. Yes, I know about the mold issue. I hope my mom did not read ur comment...;). As far as I know it's the black mold that is very nasty. It is extremely hard to keep mold out of a boat. unless u have aircon which is not my style nor budget. There are so many things to worry about. Sometimes I like to neglect some of them. When I am on the boat, there is usually a good airflow and Karl does not get any new mold. When he is closed up for longer it sure can get a bit...jungly ;) It never got as bad as it was in the beginning and I did try to get rid of most of it... That's all I can say really. Yes, you can call me ignorant, I will accept it ;)

Of course there were boats in Europe. I had looked for boats for some 3 years. Most of them were 30k upward. This one was 8k. Sure I could have found a different mouldy boat in the Caribbean. This boat got "recommended" to me by a friend cause he knew the owners. Back then, I had no experience of looking for a boat. I would surely do some things differently if I had to do it all over again...The decision did save me a lot of money in the purchase but surely cost some money and nerves in the long run. Fact is: I wanted to get going and I did not want to go back home and keep on looking... Here's a video on why / how I bought the boat kzbin.info/www/bejne/rWGzoYdun6qUqsU

Hi Michael, welcome to Untie The Lines, I am happy you liked the first episode :). you can find a bit about the story on how I found my boat Karl in this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/rWGzoYdun6qUqsU. There are usally more boats for sale in general on the Atlantic side, I'd say. People often cross the Atlantic and then just don't want to carry on or sail down, spend some time in the Caribbean and just want to sell the boat. Also, I would say that for "grooving in", the caribbean is a nice place...you have many stops, many not too expensive countries (if you stay a bit more westerly ;)) and it's not too bad for refit, either. Now, if you are not interested in sailing the caribbean, then I guess you are better off to buy your boat on the Pacific side, not to have the costs of crossing :). It all depends on what boat you are looking for, where you want to travel etc. There is hardly ever a "right" or "wrong" in cruising. More just the typical "it depends" ;). Going through the Canal is not such a hassle, actually. I found it quite an exciting trip and a great event in my journey. Yes, it's not cheap...but I am very glad I had the time that I spent in the Caribbean before going through. So for me, it was the right decision and there are no regrets :) Ahoy, Nike & Karl

You went all the way across the Atlantic to Panama to buy a moldy boat?
@WhiteSpotPirates
@WhiteSpotPirates 5 жыл бұрын
exactly ;). Except that I did not know it was moldy since the pictures I had seen were obviously nothing like the boat I found when I got there. I had looked at various boats in Europe that were in better shape...but all 30k upwards. This one was at 10k and was the boat of a friend's friends...So I gave it a shot. When I got there and saw the disaster, of course, I could have turned around and gone back. But the fact is that I badly wanted to get going and the 8k that we agreed on did not sound too bad, even considering that I had to invest more money to get the boat going. Yes, you can argue that I spent 30k in the end to have the boat in a better condition, so why not spend 30k in the first place. Well, with the money I spent on fixing the boat, I also learned a ton about boat repair, which I otherwise would not have. Would I do it again? Probably not. But after fixing up this boat, I already know a ton more about boat repair, so I don't need to go through that initial learning curve anymore. Also, I think it is a question about what you have more of: time or money. I had a lot more time than money. If you have more money but let's say only 2 years time and want to circumnavigate...of course this would not be a clever way to start. In the end, it's a very personal decision that is based your own priorities.

It just seemed like one helluva gamble buying that far from home. I've come across too many examples (some personal) of boats that weren't there, or were security on a loan, or happened to be someone else's, or whatever, to make such a gamble. But you made out okay and that's the main thing.

Hi. Just found your videos and facebook page. This looks like a good video diary of your exploits but could you tell us a little bit more about yourself? What's your name, how old are you, what did you do for a living, when did you learn to sail and how long have you had this calling to sail around the world? Thanks:-)

Hi, l was surprised that it took you three years to select a boat. Why did it take so long, what did you consider and what did you reject? Also, I'm utterly shocked that you would buy a boat that is Panama but that you have not yet seen, not even photographs. If you went to a German marina you would discover mold far sooner. Don't get me wrong. I admire your courage and abilities, I just feel it was so impractical.

I was looking at very different types of boats in the beginning and then I decided for metal at one point cause of better protection from collision. And after some more time, I had decided to go for a Reinke cause I liked their twin keels and the fact, that they are built like a tank and very solid. Oh, I did see pictures of the boat, but they were just not as recent as they should have been. And I did not buy the boat before I had seen it and checked a couple of things, e.g. that the engine was running. I know I should have hauled it out before the purchase...but well, no use to cry about spilt milk. I know that there is heaps of boats in Europe, I went all over the place to look but never found the right one for the right price. This one was a bargain and I also liked the idea of starting in the Caribbean so it would be warm for the refit.

Did you rename the early videos? Pretty sure this used to be called "The jungle of Mold"
@WhiteSpotPirates
@WhiteSpotPirates Жыл бұрын
🤣 yes, you are VERY correct, that’s what it was called. I am impressed that you remember this. Well you might also remember that I had an injury and was forced to spend three months in bed…when I first started vlogging, I did not know anything about the algorithm and even once I found out, I sort of ignored it. Guess I didn’t wanna play the game. But then…well, I did get curious and I did have a lot of time to spend without being able to move. So I started renaming some old videos. And go figure, in those months, my views exploded and I made like 1.800$ just on KZbin views…for two months…and then it went back to like 200-300$ 🤣🤣🤣 but anyhow, that’s how this video got renamed. I also tried to make it easier to see what season / episode one is at. So it was not just driven by thirst for money but also trying to give people an easier way to find their way around the episodes. Which I guess in the long run might lead to more views so scratch that, it’s all just for the money 🤣. No, but on a serious note, I try to stay true to myself with the content that I do, but I also need to make a living, so I did start to adjust my titles and thumbs a bit to please the algorithm. I’ve got a furry mouth to feed now, so I blame it on Boga 🐾🤣. Thanks for watching!

@@WhiteSpotPirates No worries, it was still quite close to the truth. Funny how people are drawn in buy those keywords. I did have some mold issue on my previous boat but not as bad as "The Jungle of mold" so it was kind of a measurement stick :-) Yes, I have been watching from the very beginning and followed your example, on a smaller scale. I have a 12m steel ketch and I am living aboard in the Rotterdam Marina for the past 5 years. Love the (financial) freedom it brings and doing the upkeep is a lot of fun too. Untying the line's has proven to be the hardest part :-) Well who knows... maybe next year.

ah, sorry, yes :) chlor is actually German. I also used som Isopropanol alcohol somethimes...But I think that there are tons of products for modl. Important is, that you use something that makes it stop to keep on growing. Vinegar works pretty well for that, is cheap and probably the healthies.

Doch, klar.

Hope you didn't pay much for that boat , to sail around the world requires a well maintained vessel . You'll soon find out restoring an abandoned boat is very expensive . The photos show structural damage a proper survey should have been done before any money changes hands . Lots of luck
@WhiteSpotPirates
@WhiteSpotPirates 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Greg, a survey for sure would have helped, I agree. I payed 8k for the boat, which for a 37' aluminum sailboat is not a ton. Sure I had to invest some money into refit, but that way I learnt a whole bunch. Structural damage...I would disagree there. Where exactly did you spot that? The main issues with the boat that needed fixing when I bought it were: - new rigging (1.6k$) - new sails (4k) - new batteries (1k) - some fixing of some pitholes in the hull (3k with haul out, welding, stripping hull of paint and repaint) - some new electronics (maybe 3k) These are the bigger jobs and of course I also did some other smaller stuff on the boat, too. But not all of it was totally necessary to move around with the boat. I eventually bought a new engine after three years for 8k. All in all the boat has a solid structure IMO. The bigger problem was more that I did not have a lot of experience and did not tackle all of the jobs right or did not give them the right priority. If I had to do it all again, I would know much better where to look and what to focus on. That's why I agree that a survey would have helped. It would have shown me which points are the most crucial to work on the get the boat running and which jobs could wait and be done under way.

@@WhiteSpotPirates I didn't intend to sound so mean : It's just that I've owned and fixed up several boats and it's so expensive , I now believe it's better to find a well maintained boat and pay a little more even if that requires holding off your life aboard . You've proven your salt and proud of your boat so of course i wish you smooth sailing with the sun & wind at you back .
@WhiteSpotPirates
@WhiteSpotPirates 5 жыл бұрын
@@gregmirr I guess it also depends on the money you have available. If you buy cheap then you can step by step refit...then you don't have to wait that long until you can afford the boat that might need less work ;). But I totally get what you mean.
