Neil Gaiman owns the rights to the series although it's through DC. He pitched it to Netflix and they were the ones like HELL YEA. So glad they did. I've been hyped for this for a while. One of the most intricate graphic novels finally brought to life

Encephilitis Lethargica or Sleepy sickness was a real historical event around the same time as the spanish flu followed by the World Wars. About a million people were really sleepwalking or in coma's. No one knows the cause to this day. the victims were literally just sent away and forgotten about. A doctor found a temporarily cure that brought them back from their sleep decades late. After realising they had missed a whole chunk of their life, some patients told doctors not to wake them up as couldnt adjust to modern life. its sad. Great reactions looking forward for more

"Eternal Nightmares" is what Dream gifted him with in the comic. Well, Eternal Waking from Nightmares only to realise you are still in a Nightmare and wake up again only to realise you're still in a Nightmare... etc.

The original comic book was a DC Comic before it was later moved to DC's Vertigo imprint. A lot of older DC comics stories and characters were part of the earlier story arcs in the comics but were either changed or repurposed. BTW the sleeping sickness was a real thing, of course not for the same reasons.

The original punishment was eternal waking. Ever wake up from a dream, only to realise you're still dreaming? Imagine doing that, except you never really wake up. That's why he's twitching in his sleep; he'll be doing that for the rest of his life. They filmed the eternal waking scene, but it was cut due to test viewer feedback. With Neil on board, the show is very faithful to the comic (that shot of Dream levitating into the vortex is iconic). There's a little streamlining (see above) and rearranging, but any other changes seem to be for the better, especially for this format. The major difference in the next episode was made specifically to tug at the heartstrings...

you might already be familiar with Ethel's son from other DC stuff...they removed all the superhero aspects from the Netflix version, but in the comics, her son is Doctor Destiny, a classic Justice League villain, who used Dream's ruby to make dreams and nightmares come true, defeating the League on some occasions. relatively the same character in the show, but toned down and not a "super-villain", at least in the campy comic sense and, honestly, Michael would have been the easiest angel for him to get a feather from. he was still imprisoned by Sandalphon at that point.

Yes, I was wondering if y'all were going to review this. I listened to the audiobook and loved it so it's exciting to see it come to life. It's a great show and it gets better. They originally had 10 episodes then they added one more ep.11 which is kind of a double episode. I love y'all reviews! Keep up the great work!

This is a rare case of a show being 99.9% like the comics its based on. The plot and the way it unfolds is basically panel to panel. There are a few creative changes but for the most part watching this show is just like reading the comic.
