To me it makes perfect sense that Lucifer would lose. The Oldest Game isn't about pure power. It's of wits, transformation, confidence. It's a test of creativity. Though Lucifer is more powerful, Dream has the advantage in this type of game, since every idea ever thought, every dream ever dreamed comes through his realm before it hits the waking world. It ties well into the theme that Lucifer was prepared for his visit. It also shows that the real power in the Sandman stories isn't about straightforward power. It's about the power of dreams and what they allow people to achieve

I agree. It is contrasted against Dream's description of Lucifer at the beginning of the episode. But the fact that Lucifer duels Dream, and not Choronzon, makes sense, it adds enough personal weight and now we have better reasoning behind why Lucifer hates Dream. And ultimately, the win showcases Dream's power, as you said. I just had that note that it might take some power away from it earlier in the video, but ultimately I concluded that it all makes much more sense, later in the video. So I completely agree with you and you described it nicely. :)

I loved this episode. The Oldest Game was breathtaking to see on screen. I agree with the others, it makes sense that Dream would win in a game of imagination when he can take inspiration from the dreams of literally everyone ever. Great review, as always.

Well I doubt it's a great idea to challenge the manifestation of creativity itself. (I know he's the manifestation of dream, but creativity is an aspect of dreams.) Daydreams as an example

Hi everyone! This one took the longest to put together so far so thanks for watching. Feel free to share it with a fellow Sandman fan or just drop a like to give it a small boost. Apologies if my audio is a bit finicky at times, I tried ironing it out the best I could, but I'll get to a better mic for future videos. Thanks for watching!

Another fantastic breakdown and review, thank you! I will say that I thought the win by Dream over Lucifer worked for me. First, because I think it perfectly highlighted that no matter how cosmically powerful Lucifer might be, Dreams are pervasive, and they underpin nearly every aspect of reality. As you said, there would be no true Hell without Dream. So in his way, Dream IS far more powerful than Lucifer, just from a different point of view. I also felt that making the loss personal made the threat to destroy Dream more, I don't want to say sensible, but it made more sense to me than it did in the comics. I mean, reading the comics, I get that Lucifer is prideful, but it still feels very much overkill for him to make his response to 'You beat my Demon and one-upped me' 'I'm going to kill you.' It almost felt as if there was some pre-existing underlying animosity which we didn't see in the comics which would have made Lucifer going for the nuclear option make sense. I never got the feeling that Lucifer felt much pride in Hell as a whole or its demons, but personal pride? He has that in spades.

You are welcome! And thank you for your great comment and for sharing your thoughts. You are absolutely right, in the comic, there isn't much context to the "one day, we shall destroy you" moment. I also feel that this might be one of the moments in the story where Neil, looking back at it 30 years later, realized that it would have been better this way in the first place. I also liked the added weight of personal failure, which made for a great character beat.

@@HeadsAndTales I agree. One of the things that I have enjoyed about the adaptation, is that while they have tried to stay true to the comics, it has not been slavishly so. When a change or adjustment in some way improved the story or fixed things that might have worked in the comics (or not) but could be done better in the show, they were willing to do that. In regards to Matthew in this scene, I recall seeing a question posed to Neil about this in his twitter and he said that exchange before the 'Hope' line was done to create dramatic tension. I can see that, and didn't have a problem with it. To me, I felt as though it served (as much of Matthew's dialogue and conversation with Dream in the episode did) as a way of conveying all of the internal dialogue Dream has with himself as he goes through Hell, that wouldn't really translate well in this medium.

@@snowglass3969 Totally! That's why I said I feel like NG 30 years later almost gave us Sandman v2.0 under the pretenses of a Netflix show adaption. I feel a lot of these changes make much more sense than in the comics. Especially, in the earlier issues where he also had to tend to DC references and make the story relevant within that larger universe. In the Netflix show, that burden is removed. This one, where Dream battles Lucifer makes sense. Abosrbing Gregory gave so much more emotional weight than absorbing Cain and Able's letters of commission. Dream using the promise of removing Constantine's nightmare as leverage to get her to help makes for a better character beat, not to mention the actual confrontation with Constantine. Not making John Dee entirely one-dimension is another example, but that's a primary example of the limitations of working within DC universe. In DC comics Dr. Destiny is insane and wants to rule the world. Good luck making us empathize with that character. But the TV show can do that. That's why I like to think that some of these changes are what NG would do if he would rewrite the original material. Regarding Matthew, I understand the dramatic tension part of it, but once again the overall delivery of the line just sticks out to me. Even a flashback voice of Nada yelling 'I won't give up hope' would work better for Dream to be reminded of that. While Matthew is a reflection of Dream's internal dialog in this episode, I still don't think the audience needs to be spoon-fed this moment. Even if Matthew didn't intervene and Dream got up and said 'hope', with the dialog that followed with Lucifer we would still complete the same story arc. We would know Hell without Hope and Dreams is nothing. So in that moment, the need for spoon-feeding (something that the show does all the time unfortunately) the internal dialog is gone and for the dramatic tension I would choose something else. That's how I would creatively approach this, but at the same time Matthew enabled them to do both so I see why they made that choice.

@@HeadsAndTales I completely agree with you on all of your points about the changes. I enjoyed the comics, as I did a number of adaptations of other works over the years, but I am always interested to see how the stories change and evolve over time, especially with a property like this one, where it's the creator themselves having a chance to revisit their work. I can't imagine there's any artist out there who doesn't look back on their old work and consider how they could have improved something they did before, now that they have the benefit of hindsight and experience. I think that, as fans, we can often become too precious about the things that we enjoy, but it really isn't realistic to expect that an adaptation is going to be a complete recreation of something. If it were, let's be honest, what would be the real enjoyment in that? I'd much rather see how a new time and a new artistic eye can look at something that came before. And I also completely see your point about Matthew. It certainly wasn't a perfect solution, and as you said, some instances of being spoon-fed info are there, but I wonder if it's because they had to make compromises/decisions to account for this being seen both by people well versed in the Sandman, and people who would be coming into it as complete novices.

@@snowglass3969 Well said! In terms of adapting the source material, I think Sandman fans can be more than happy. This show is one of the most faithful adaptions that haven been released in recent times. And all the compromises are probably for the better, but it doesn't mean it's not fun to discuss them nonetheless. :)

The only way Lucifer could win would be to destroy it's own hope for redemption. Losing was the better option.

Oh I found John Dee sparing her made him more unbearable for me. It made him feel unpredictable. His actions span a spectrum from horrific to genuinely kind. Plus the amulet is demonic and it's protection is gruesome. It's as much a curse as a blessing for someone like her.
