I'm so, so, so grateful Zach didn't suffer any brain damage while the shunt wasn't working properly. My father had adult onset hydrocephalus that went undiagnosed for a few years and then after the first shunt surgery the doctor didn't stay on top of things so my father had even more fluid build-up and by the time we finally got another neuro surgeon to step in it was too late and too much damage had been done. My father was in hospice for nearly 2 years before he passed and couldn't communicate at all the final six months of his life. My biggest takeaway from all of it was make sure the doctors listen to you and your symptoms and if they don't, find another doctor. The doctors who act like they know everything are the ones who are the least capable. The doctors who are open to new ideas and new ways of treating things will look for solutions.

Like Zach, I’ve had a shunt since 6 weeks of age. In 1967! When Shunts weren’t perfected the way they have been now. No, Zack should NOT HAVE DRIVEN! I had my last revision in 2011. I also had a colloid cyst removed first. Which was a very dangerous surgery! I had the guru of Neurosurgeons. I’d had this Colloid Cyst for at least 25 years, but it was in a very dangerous spot! But I’d always been told that if it moved even a fraction of an inch, I’d suffer INSTANT DEATH! But since my shunt had failed, they took the old shunt out first, and then I was in ICU OBSERVATION for 3 days, before they put the new one in. They had to shave my whole head, because of the cyst! (I’d just had my hair colored a beautiful purplish red color! 3 weeks before!) I was more upset about THAT, than my two brain surgeries! I am blessed also! But when they took out the Colloid Cyst, Dr. Reichman warned me that I would lose my Short Term Memory. And I have!! It’s so frustrating!! Yes, it is very scary! I get Migraines, but my Migraines are different from my shunt failure headaches! I had 57 Staples! I remember seeing my Dad sitting in my hospital room reading a book. While I was there. And my Dad had died. In March of 2010. I didn’t have ANY INSURANCE when I went in for my Surgery. So my Guru of Neurosurgeons admitted me through the ER, helped me get on Financial Assistance, and helped me to qualify for Medicaid, because with my debilitating headaches, I COULD NOT WORK! It was a TRUE BLESSING! Because that 5 day hospital stay, just the hospital portion alone was over $70,000 dollars! WHO knows what that would have cost today?! I was blessed to find this Dr. I didn’t have a Neurologist, OR Neurosurgeon at the time. Just my family practice Dr. so I was steered towards this group practice of Dr.’s and at the time I still had a phonebook. So I said a heartfelt prayer, and then looked at the names, and basically said, eeney menu money mod, and dialed the office. Everything fell into place, and I was in the ER BEING ADMITTED FOR OBSERVATION, Thursday night, and scheduled for Surgery Saturday morning!

I was very interested hearing of your experience. I had a shunt placement in 2021 at age 50. Many factors led to this but hearing what you went through really hit home with me. I'm fortunate to have a fantastic neurosurgeon here in Maine on my case. I do fear the time I may need a revision. Yes, it definitely is brain surgery, even my neurosurgeon said it's a common procedure but it's still brain surgery. Glad you are feeling better Zach.

My granddaughter also has hydrocephalus and has a shunt, she is very young and non verbal, she had meningitis as a baby and caused a whole host of issues including seizures and a stroke, so it was eye opening to see how bad you felt, I hate that you went through that and had to have the whole world see it, but… it was a positive for someone like myself who can’t ask my granddaughter how she is feeling, she can’t tell me, but I can see what she might be feeling from seeing how you felt and you were able to verbalize. Thank you so much for sharing, I hated seeing you in pain and would never wish that on anyone, my heart goes out to you 🙏🏻❤

I had a complete VP Shunt replacement done on Januaty 10th this year (2024). My tubing had fractured before surgery too. The catheter in my brain was partially occluded from tissue growing into it. This surgery is NO JOKE. I have had 4 other brain surgeries before this one. The last one in 2016. Watching this episode was a little rough. I'm not gonna lie. Lol Then again I'm still healing from the surgery in January 9 weeks ago. I thought the suffering before surgery was hardcore. But now with this recovery, it's been ROUGH. But I just want to sat that Zack you are a warrior. That kind of head pain is no joke. And I know, I know, don't call you a warrior. I am the same way. I'm just trying to live my life. As I am sure you are too. Anyway, you have a BEAUTIFUL family. The kids are just the absolute cutest. :)

It's true. I had excruciating migraines for a period of three years. I worked at a place where the supervisor mentioned she got them and it never stopped her from doing to work, so anyone who said it did was just being dramatic and making excuses. I didn't say it to her face, but I wanted to say how wrong that was, and she best be grateful if hers weren't that bad!! Eventually a headache specialist out me on an injection that stopped the cycle of mine and I have only had one since. ❤

same here and it really annoys me when people say I am lazy or I should just push through it. With Tori's comment about a deadbeat Dad make me wonder if she has ever had migraines as she wouldn't even say ANYTHING like that. They are debilitating as when your head is involved it is hard. At least if you have a sore arm etc, you can concentrate. My husband rolls his eyes as have no compassion at all. I sometimes wish he would get one then he would understand. I became seriously ill and hospitalized before they finally figured out what was going on. Bloodwork ,CT scans ect. I did not "fall into the box" so they never went the right direction. I feel your relief finally getting it fixed!

Binge watching the podcast. Very big fan of you, Zach and the kids. One of the main reasons I watched the show. I watched from the very first episode that aired all those years ago. I got to watch Zach grow up and etc... It's so great that you are doing this podcast. I hope it becomes very successful and continues for years to come.
