as a person of Irish descent, I find reactionaries' historically illiterate efforts to say that my distinct culture is the same as, say, Italian or English or Nordic culture offensive- those people, after all, have ancestors who were pretty brutal to mine. the idea of a unified "white" culture isn't just racist, it also betrays a fundamental lack of appreciation for the history of Europe as a place occupied by many distinct ethnic groups, who have only relatively recently been lumped together as "white"

the fact that people can not think for the single second long enough to understand that "there is no white culture" means "there is no culture inherently based on whiteness" and not "there aren't any cultures that white people are/can be a apart of" is very disheartening. @abathtub14113 жыл бұрын
@@sidneymoon2622 yes, 'black culture' in America is specially referring to black Americans, and people who use the term are/should be aware that it doesn't apply to every black person. The fact that it's referred to in such broad terms is most likely due to the fact Americans are so used to the dialouge being about us that people dont feel the need to put the distinction in its name, but evidently that causes confusion. However I don't know if African American culture is necessarily a better alternative bc not all black slaves were from Africa and not all African Americans are descended from slaves, and other countries with a history of slavery probably have a similar phenomenon. in the internet age terms with vauge names and specific definitions become tricky because they often have nuance which is extremely critical to its argument that isn't explicit in the name, but with the sheer amount of information we consume not everyone is going to take the time to learn the full definition. edit: spelling

Yeah "White Culture" is really bizarre. American's have an unfortunate American-centric view of the world. England, Germany, Italy, Greece, Eastern Europe all of them have very distinct unique cultures. It's a bit like there's no "Asian Culture" cause China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Indian All Distinct Different Cultures. Like African American culture is distinct from Nigerian, or South African culture. Like America does have a culture, there's a lot of things that are distinct to North America, Canda and USA have very similar cultural touch stones. It's not a specific White culture in America, like we have lots of distinct cultures within the US too, from New York to Los Angelas. America and Canada are not homogenous units. Like it's so frustrating people act like races are the end all be all of things. Humans started in Africa, and we were really good at living everywhere so here we are today. All over the place. x.x these people are absolute clowns.

From this perspective, it is rather hurtful when I constantly hear American leftist lumping all European into these monsters who ruined the world. with the idea that only "white people" did any inventing or made advances, agreed with everything you said about colonialism, but its also very much shaped by the environment different cultures lived in. the british were into farming and cities because that's what made sense there, and helped them survive their harsh winters. people make a big deal about how zero african cultures invented the wheel but like... they knew about the wheel. they just didn't use it, because it was not a very efficient form of travel in that environment. here in australia, indigenous aussies were deemed "uncivilised" because they moved around with the seasons rather than building farms and cities - but thats what makes sense in this environment! that lifestyle had evolved to suit australia's land, australia's food and water sources, australia's weather, and indigenous aussies had been thriving for literal millenia. and then the white settlers trying to farm here complained about how inhospitable australia is, lmfao. wheels and farms and cities make sense in britain, but using them as checkpoints of "civilisation" in completely different environments was bloody silly, and also completely racist.

The concept of whiteness is also pretty new in the grand scheme of things, so it's kind of weird to group historical art from various European countries into one culture. If you went back in time and told those artists that the English, the French, the Italians and the Greeks were all part of the same culture, they'd probably be pretty mad at you. Also, I would argue that "black culture" isn't a thing either. Are we talking about African American culture? Nigerian Culture? Aboriginal Australian culture? Caribbean culture (and if so, which Caribbean country are we talking about?)? There are so many different groups that all get called "black" so there's not a monolithic black culture either.

This has more or less been my take. I get Ro's explanation of the experience that black people across the world share, but culture doesn't begin and end there.

You're correct that Black people in Nigeria for example would not have the same culture as Black people in America, but in the video I believe she was trying to make the point that in America there's a Black culture created through shared oppression and the history of slavery because slave owners deliberately erased their identities and what country they came from.
@astroblast23253 жыл бұрын
"black culture" is kind of North-America, maybe Britain specific. SSA countries wouldn't have a "black culture" because there isn't a shared experience across borders in the same way there are in say the States. It's also a much larger place and a lot of family lines are native to their country and therefore their culture is too (I hope that makes sense?). Of course, there are discrepencies and differences and nuances within black communities, experiences, and by extension black culture, but it does exist in a contemporary, Western context (ie. Fashion, similar dialect, music, stemming from black communities and shared across them until they reached the mainstream).
@Crazypixiness3 жыл бұрын
Essentially- a lot of Nigerians, Carribean people etc don't identify as Black UNTIL they come to Canada, the US, the UK etc. Because they're not racially othered in Black vs White. It's different ethnicities and complexities interacting. There's definitely still HELLA diversity even amongst Black Americans who are descendants of enslaved Africans but there is a commonality that we all share under Black culture through what we've forged under oppression. This is also shared with Aboriginal Australians who identify as Black, I feel with our experiences and humor.

I think you'd benefit from more reading about Roman history. it kinda sounds like you don't understand their spread, culture, or influence very much. this "Romans were white" reduction of history is literally invented as a white supremecist talking point.

American: " white culture exists!" Proceeds to show images of nearly only european art development and countries. I'll be generalizing here a bit and I'm sorry in advance but the race-divide is so pronounced in a country who claims to be so progressive and free and "the biggest nation"...yeah by size, not intelligence. I live in a small country in Europe, am white and never once thought to be proud of it. I'm ashamed of what my ancestors have done in their goal to colonize the world and many others are too. Which isn't to say that racism doesn't exist because unfortunately it does but we're progressing into a more understanding people and more accepting. Baby steps i guess. But in America they seem to want to perpetuate this division between races just for the fun of it. You cannot fuck over someone and then expect them to smile and say thank you! Of course other races are sometimes more reactive, you don't give them a chance to show you how wonderful they can be! This got way too long, sorry. I CACKLED at your invitation for "political togetherness" lmao Also I really like the way you are up front about the barrier of saying "I love you" as a public figure. Feels organic the way you do it

also this guy proved that as white people we do have a shared culture and it's claiming credit for shit we did not do or make

the funny thing with the first tiktok literally every single person has culture. this is something very basic you learn in an anthropology class. culture is is like how you get married, relationships and dynamics in families, art, how you do funerals you name it culture is not always this broad extravagant thing it can be the small little things
@dannyboyincel Жыл бұрын
No so cultural is the arts and other manifestations of human intellectual achievement regarded collectively. With Europeans it is especially beautiful I don't see anything wrong with wanting to continue something that is good and beautiful

I really appreciate you dissecting and answering the content of the tik toks, I feel like sometimes it's presented with such rhetoric that it's bit hard to find the counter-arguments, and I really appreciate you doing that, it's super useful and well put. Thank you ! xx
