My household watches Gunsmoke EVERY day! Mornings episodes, evening episodes, and night episodes. I'm in my middle 60's, and I remember watching Gunsmoke as a child, by the way...it was my grandmother favorite western. I don't condone violence, but I have to laugh when Matt issues out those backslaps. You almost always know when it's coming. Yeah, Matt was the MAN! He told you what you was gonna do, what you wasn't gonna do, then he would turn his back to you and walk off. He also was known for throwing out quick, smart remarks, to threats. By the way...the evenings 8:00pm episode is in color, and I enjoy seeing the colors of their clothing. I wish they would show more episodes in color. To all reading this, be blessed and stay safe.

It’s because Gunsmoke like most westerns had morals about good and bad, Dillon was good and understanding law enforcer, and people didn’t want to hear or see about morals anymore, yes it has some outdated cultural issues but for the most part his character was wholesome and how you dealt with evil..

My whole family watched Gunsmoke in the 50’s and 60’s. My dad would always chuckle when he talked about Chester or Festus. I rediscovered the show in the last few years, and my world stops every afternoon for an hour while I watch it. I look up the bio’s of the actors and guest actors, and I try to remember their names before the credits show them. The show was so well written, casted, acted. I treasure it more and more as time goes on. Too bad the studio heads and the critics didn’t appreciate the show. I prefer the half hour black and white episodes the most. And I miss all those actors and guest actors SO MUCH! As long as the reruns keep running, I’ll be watching.☺️

I don't remember the final episode. I remember that my father considered "Gunsmoke," as well as the series "Have Gun, Will Travel," to be more realistic portrayals of the gritty reality of the old west than others in the western genre, One scene in particular stands out. Marshall Dillon and Festus (?) sitting on their horses in a driving rain watching the bad guys getting away. Dillon remarks to Festus, "Well, you can't win them all."

I was little and only occasionally was allowed to stay up past my bedtime to watch. As I got older, I remember watching every week when it aired. Now that I have the series, I can watch all of the episodes and really enjoy them. It is great to see so many young actors who got various roles in the show and then went on to be stars of their own shows. Gunsmoke is a great example of a show that can be considered and adult show without the bad language and porno-style scenes in most adult films now a days.

Not sure that there was a son, but in the original series there was an episode where Matt had amnesia and was nursed back to health by a widowed rancher played by Michael Learned. So typical of CBS executives at that time. They purged alot of great shows that were still in the top 10 ratings. It's the way they did it. They wait until the off season and all actors leave. Then, they cancel it behind their backs. When actors return to studio for work, they are denied entrance, even to retrieve their belongings. That's how badley they all were treated after years of service. Going all way back to late 50s. Miss Kitty was right with her sentements.
@robertdragoff69092 жыл бұрын
To be honest time was catching up with the cast…. Milburn Stone (Doc Addams) died from heart problems. Amanda Blake (Miss Kitty) contracted aids and very sick when she did the 1987 reunion TV movie and passed not long afterward…. Pretty much the rest of the cast went to TV heaven as the years went by. I remember when Mr. Arness got annoyed when Kelsey Grammar broke Arness’ record for portraying a lead character in a TV show. It wasn’t a ratings juggernaut for all the years it was on the air, but it was and will always be a classic TV western.
@mikeslater62462 жыл бұрын
It is my understanding that Gunsmoke had been canceled after the 1967 season but it was the favourite program of the wife of the chief executive of CBS and her complaints were listened to so they cancelled Gilligan's Island instead. Talk about dirty, the Gilligans Island cast had been told they were renewed for a fourth season and just a few weeks later were told they were canceled. They even had the script templates for about 10 shows laid out when the program was canceled.

Dillion and Kitty were not the only characters to return for the tv movie. Newly O’Brien also returned. He was replaced Matt as Marshal of Dodge City. Also Doc Adams was not in every episode of the series. He left the series temporarily and another doc filled in for him in Dodge.
@Opry99er2 жыл бұрын
Doc was not present in all 635 episodes. He was, however, present in all 20 seasons.

Growing up there were two types of families: Gunsmoke or The Big Valley. You were one or the other. My family was Big Valley (my Mom, a very classic Hollywood fan, was very into and impressed with Barbara Stanwyck but I saw a couple of episodes of Gunsmoke).

I remember watching Gunsmoke when I was a little boy and I managed to buy a handful of DVD's. Living in The Netherlands means possibilities are limited. I have one complete season, the first that had episodes that lasted 50 minutes. Probably a one/off box set to see if it could be succesful. And I managed to import a region 1 DVD set that had some episodes in color. It probably was a shame the show was axed but we still can be glad that it lasted 20 years. Gunsmoke wasn't the only western series that ended the way it did. How about Bonanza?

Why was it changed from Gunlaw to Gunsmoke?

Some of these comments are truly moronic and unduly critical. Yes, the cast was long in the tooth, but the quality of the scripts and the showcasing of many future stars, and the adult treatment of the material doesn’t mean it was weak fare. It was a major success and collaborative effort by dozens of fine actors. Making TV ratings the last word on quality is never a good idea.

As much as I like Gunsmoke, I think it would have been a much better show if they would have at least allowed Chester to marry someone… and live in town! Also it would have been great to have seen Matt and Kitty at least be romantic to each other at times! I know Matt felt like he could not marry, but it would have been great if they could at least have dated each other and be Flirtatious towards each other! I believe most of the audience would have liked this!

I have some issues with Chester and Matt. Like you said about Matt and Kitty and their lack of romance, I think Matt just didn't like women. Hold on, let me finish. In some episodes Matt left Kitty hanging so many times, even leaving her alone when they're well into a trip that they had taken just to be at a trial. His job was so important to him he couldn't request the court date be put off for a couple of weeks for Kitty. Yet in the episode "Honey pot" he was willing to resign, to quit his job all because he thought he might have to arrest an old friend he hadn't seen in 20 years. Very inconsistent. As far as Chester and the inconsistency of his character, in one episode he's all grown up and trying to act like a man and in another he's practically a little girl (see final scene of "The F.U.") Chester is most definitely struggling with his gender. He never missed a chance to face his butt towards the camera, with his pants jacked up all into his self. Just an opinion.
