spiritual often seems about the ego to me. "I'm getting messages from the devise creator" and "we pass into the afterlife and live for eternity" are two of the most refined, egotistical statements one could make.

"Concerned with or affecting the spirit or soul" is inherently religious. Almost all atheists do not believe humans possess a "spirit" or a "soul".

I would imagine most agnostics would say there aren't souls or spirits as well. As anyone with a logical mind doesn't believe in things with no evidence. There is no physical evidence of a soul or a spirit existing within the human body. Science is not a form of faith, if you believe it is, then we all know where you fall on the religious spectrum. I guess I suppose I should've used the term "hypothetize", rather than believe, but anyone with a speck of intelligence knew what I was talking about. You don't start off believing everything that everyone says until someone proves a negative, you have things backwards. Attempting to shift the burden of truth onto others when they (usually religious individuals) are the ones making the inherent claim that souls do in fact exist.

To be frank, I'm not the one making the definitive claim, the individuals that insist that a soul or spirit exists are, the burden of truth ONLY exists upon them to provide evidence or "proof". That's a silly comment. So cynical. Medical science is frustratingly slow - even more so when the government has a panicky reaction to "drugs" for 50 years. But there are countless medications which we have discovered and invented in the past 140 years which help people, as you should know. Psychedelics were made illegal because they scared enough of the wrong people at the wrong time.

YES. I'm a medical student who recently finished reading this book, and I absolutely LOVED it. Having a history of mental illness, anorexia, binging, depression, the ideas in this book really elucidated the mechanisms of mental illness. As I am training my mind to see it as a "snowy hill" (the analogy described in the book), I am learning to see that where thoughts go, energy flows. I also am trying strategies to reduce blood flow to my DMN, such that I can be more fully conscious, present in the beauty of life. 23 years ago I had a full blown kundalini awakening after taking psilocybin. It dramatically changed the understanding I have of myself, the world and my place in it. I was an atheist up to that point, but afterwards couldn't deny that there is a benevolent entity that at the source of all things. It speaks to us incessantly and its language is love. I no longer fear death, which gives me a totally different perspective on life. The experience changed my life in ways I can not begin to describe. I wish there were more education about psychedelics and spirituality, because there is obviously still a lot of misplaced prejudice and ignorance around.

If I may? How could you trust that the internal psychedelic experience you had purports to reality? How can you trust that the experience you had if god was reliable or accurate? I ask because different accounts of different dirties exist and how am I or anyone supposed to be convinced by that?

No way to communicate that feeling convincingly and it could be argued it was just the brain chemically experiencing something but I still would say it was very real and true. I don’t think anyway to convince you without you having a first person experience.

I've read McKenna, Castaneda, Huxley, etc. So when I heard that a man who was famous for his books about food had written a book about his underground experiences with psychedelics, I was intrigued, but skeptical. @@blackmamba6046 True Hallucinations? McKenna? That one is farrrrrrrrr out there! I still enjoyed it a great deal. I hope you enjoy the Pollan book as well. There's also a Graham Hancock book on the topic as well. Take care (wish I was able to be more involved in all of this currently, but life just isn't permitting that right now. P.S. Graham Hancock has some decent videos on YT about Ayahuasca. Gabor Mate is another who has really been a pioneer on the topic. I wish I could attend a few ceremonies myself ~ very much. I have been in the realm by taking a homemade variant, but the ceremonies with proper guidance & company would be far superior. I hope your journeys continue to be fruitful (-:

When I was young (16 to 25) I used Psychedelics all the time. My feeling is that they are such a personal experience that making them just a clinical tool, taking them out of the hand of the voyager is, to my mind, an OK thing, but they should be available to everyone. I would never take a Psychedelic with a "guide". I don't recommend that stance for anyone but me but for me it works.

Sadly it’s extremely hard to find. Most of the “LSD” that’s being sold today are low-quality analogs that provide some nice visuals but not the same mindset. Look up Hoffman’s trip report or the video of the woman who did acid during the 60s from less than 150ug and compare it to your own experiences. It’s a completely different substance.

@Beautiful Actually today it's far easier for people in the West to find and purchase extremely pure psychoactive substances, including LSD-25. This is due to the proliferation of deep web drug markets that utilize consumer reports (user reviews), and third-party escrow payment holding services to hold sellers to their word far better than a "street" seller is held accountable, which is basically not at all. In the past, purchasers had no power and dealers on the street could put all sorts of analogues, inactive substances, or even poisons in their products and the user would be unaware until ingestion (unless they had access to GC/MS or HPLC chemical testing equipment or a test kit). Because of these Amazon-like drug markets, the purchasers of drugs are empowered over the sellers, because the marketplace is fundamentally structured to reward honest sellers who ship accurately-labeled, pure substances and punish dishonest sellers who ship laced or inaccurately-labeled substances.

Good talk, though I find it hard to imagine someone taking psychedelics and not in the very least suspecting the existence of the universal mind. To think of the brain as the source of consciousness as opposed to it being a function of consciousness says to me that these exploratory missions he was undertaking didn't go nearly far enough to completely breakthrough the illusionary subject/object boundaries of ego based perception... It’s definitely true that the use of psychedelics inhibits authoritarian and conservative beliefs, and while that was a problem in the regimented days of the 60’s, i think we’ve come to a place as a society today where we value individuality and originality more than conformity and order. Psychedelics have the potential to promote those qualities that we need in an increasingly rapidly changing world, and I think they might be the only way for us as a species to avoid running off the cliff.

If considered that CG Jung already described those experiences in much more sophisticated details and in scientific psychological research almost 100 years ago, should make those gentlemen feel rather humble considering that they are leaders of a talk which barely scratches the surface. Terrence McKenna would have a lot to add to their questions, he also took his learnings mostly from CG Jung. The gratitude Jung receives from the world of psychology today is "We have gone beyond those old timers and no longer need them" Modern psychology as it stands is the least informed on matters of the subjective mind and is acting like a bratty child in the sphere of the spiritual experience. How they can seriously raise the question of the distinction between the here and now and the "otherworldly" as a supposedly new question is quite sad. When the distinction between the temporal and the non temporal, of the experience that is linked to our life time in relation to the experience of the millions of years of natural development and then the transcendent on top of it, the subjective and the collective etc. , has already been elaborated in such a rich manner throughout time and again in great detail by Jung. Re-ligio ...linking back to the source, means to connect with a collective aspect if existence which did not come to be through our subjective ego but is an aspect of the experience of life which we all share and have shared for millions of years. Yes that collective entity is in fact a "source" tp which we need to connect if we don't want to lose our little minds that have been around for only a few years in relation to the eternal. If you steer a boat across the ocean and decide to ignore the waves that naturally occur on it, you will end up in serious trouble.

I have always wondered why the beings described by trippers are not definitely referred to as Archetype. I suppose it may be more complex than that, because the beings are purported to communicate profound revelations, but perhaps encountering them is not nessecary for a mystical experience.

You are asserting that Jung's theories perfectly fit and describe psychedelic experience. I don't recall Jung ever making that connection, which (by the way) still remains to be proven. Psychology is still young. The behaviorist reaction to psychoanalysis was a strong one, but likely an essential "course correction" If psychological science eventually progresses to establish that Jung's theories were, in fact, accurate, that would be a massive development. It probably won't be that he was 100% correct. (That's always unlikely if you look at the history of science or intellectual history.) But partially with some corrections and clarifications? Why not. Now, go prove it and you'll change the lives of countless people. That's the hard part.

Having a spiritual experience, (here described if not defined as being "egotistical" rather than material.. This concept was demonstrated if fact to be material. For example, I drove your car right through the intersection while admiring the red color of the traffic signa. We discovered there was a material reality that indeed existed outside of our realm of perception. Dr. James Fadiman in his book 'The psychedelic explorer's guide' actually recommends the guide to try to use a mirror on the person who's tripping. Emphasis on the word try. But really I just think that you're timid about seeing your face melt away, haha.

Recommendation: set up your tents among the trees, not too far from the lake, in a provincial camp ground on the May 24th long with a few hundred of your high school peers and drink a bottle of Old Sailor or two while sitting round the fire in your dozens singing House of the Rising Sun with acoustic guitar accompaniment so that when you wander down the lane to take a pee in the brush, you are in a mood to kiss the pretty girl sitting on the hood of the car in the next campsite and swallow the innocent looking little piece of blotting paper with the picture of a three-eyed-toad impressed upon it which she fetches from the nefarious looking driver of the long, wide, low, grey, Chevy which had been slowly, slowly crawling up the lane through the smokey twilight mist. Later, when your floating upside down buddha shaped self image wrapped in green fog rights itself and slowly extends, one-at-a-time, feet to the ground and the fog lifts, your adventure with the sphinx and the glowing jewel bedecked trees and the noble lions who are your brothers, is about to begin.

Experiencing eternity or what certainly passes as this regardless of our adapted shortcomings has for me been a very less than enjoyable ride, inside a grinding three-dimensional repetitive turning of the reality endlessly repeating on itself and doing this forever, the term "forever" knowingly happening not as a idea or notion but hard realization gives a Hellishness not leaving me with a desire to ever have this experience again. The cliche' of "time not existing" compounded to a unique permanence I'm not so sure it didn't take me a few lifetimes to escape. I'm left with the question; was it worth it?

A rule in mental healthcare is that someone only has a "problem" if their behaviors and perceptions are causing significant problems in their life. It sounds like your unusual perceptions do not cause you any such problems. What you describe is probably a form of hallucination which, medically-speaking, is part of a psychosis you experience. Many people inaccurately believe that all psychotic experiences are dangerous, but that isn't true. Some people (perhaps you) are not caused any distress by them. Do not worry unless your experiences change into something that causes you significant problems living your life. In the meantime, enjoy them.

Nobody needs to go to deep Amazon forest to have acess to ayuasca. It is a lot cheaper go to Brasília, brazil´s capital, where you can find a lot of religious center that drink ayuasca (Daime tea). You can go to Chapada dos Veadeiros also, one of the most beatiful waterfall in the world are there.

Just to expand on this as I think it is really key to the clinical therapeutic use, how it dissolves the ego, which is that it is possible to see and reconcile the fact that ......1. yes i politely disagree. Terrence had alot of the psychology talk, experience discussion, but Pollan bridges modern standards of clinical research and trials to close the stigma and allow the FDA to bring these medicines to the public. There is no claims without evidence with him. I respect that. Its not always about talking about experiences. In order to get controversial medicines pushed through, we need scientists and work done by people like Pollan. Gotta appreciate that
