'Give him a shout out.' 'Nah, I'll give him a guitar.' That, right there! Didn't miss a beat, didn't think about it and consider any financial implications, Rob is clearly a super decent and thoughtful guy and instantly surpassed what was required and expected of him at that point. Round of applause!

Lee about the V - “So inappropriate for a beginner.” The first guitar I bought myself was a Gibson faded series Flying V. It was different and it was affordable, but I thought it was awesome. I was 15. It made me want to practice more often. Because of that, I logged hundreds of hours of practice within the first year of owning it. If the body type makes you love the guitar all the more, buy it. -PJ

My first real guitar was a ibanez V (vbt700) and since that day I always cringe when people say V don't work when siting down, or it's not good to start. A (symetrical) V is one of the best shape for sitting down. Stick it between your thighs, neck at an angle going up, giving you access to the whole neck without having your wrist having to bend at the high frets, the guitar stays put without even having your hands on it. This V and a bc rich warlock are the most ergonomic guitars I've played, the bc being even better (ergonomics wise). No the strandbergs and such might be the best All hail the V

My first guitar when learning (electric wise anyway) was an Encore Les Paul which got damaged when a cousin dropped it on concrete and smashed up the back, we filled it in and I kept using it. Stopped playing a few years ago (got it about 5 years before that) and just got the urge to start playing again and so I went to my local store and when I walked through the door this beautiful gretsch 2622t in Torino green caught my eye and I fell in love instantly. Massive thing, es 335 style body, centre block, bigsby licensed, couple of humbuckers. Absolutely in love and don’t put it down ever. I’m thinking a Fender Tele for my next one, have my eye on a beautiful Japan made on in arctic white with black binding and pickguard, 60s style, beautiful in the hands.

Escalator same here. I listened to the Albert King and SRV album and wanted a V so bad, so I bought myself one. I’m sure it wasn’t just the guitar, but I had 4 or 5 guitars before that and just sort of piddled about on them. But that V, I’ve put thousands of hours of practice on it and will likely never find a guitar that makes me want to play it more.

When I was 13 years old, I decided that I wanted to start playing guitar and taking lessons. My father went up to the attic and pulled out this absolutely terrible acoustic guitar that had the word "Contessa" written on the headstock. The action must have been 2 inches high off the fret board, but he said it was his from when he was young, so I assumed all guitars were supposed to be that way. When I showed up to my first lesson with it, my instructor was like: "yeah... you're not going to be able to learn anything on that," and the lesson was barely spent playing actual guitar and more about learning the basics out of a book. Disappointed, I went back home and told my father what happened, and from what I recall, he said something along the lines of: "yeah, I figured it would be awful, but now you're going to appreciate what I have to show you." He went back up to the corner section of the attic and pulled out this sparkly blue early 80s Fender Squier strat with a maple neck. Most people would assume "oh it's a Squier it must suck," but it was one of the better lessons he taught me, because I played the shit out of that guitar, and learned how to take good care of it. After playing for 16 years now, I can honestly say the really early Squiers are actually pretty darn good guitars. I still break it out from time to time when over-dubbing tracks and things like that. Great video though Rob and Lee! I definitely felt the feeling of nostalgia throughout this one!

The new ones (Affinity and Classic Vibe) are made in Indonesia and are actually great for the price. It had some fret sprouting, and the action was a bit high for me, but that was easy to fix and then bam, I got an amazing Butterscotch Blonde Tele for $150.00 and it sounds awesome. Feels great, plays great, and stays in tune surprisingly well (I will upgrade the tuners to Locking Tuners and gut the whole pickup section, tone pot, volume pot, and 3 way switch, and replace it with all Fender pots and switch, and get some double stacked single coils and some neck pickup I'd like, haven't chosen one yet, and also replace the input jack) and once I do the upgrades, it will basically be a Fender. Make sure to buy 2018 and up models do NOT buy anything older (unless it's a made in Japan series), or it will be completely shitty.

Most of the " middle ground" squires are REALLY REALLY Good instruments, vintage vibe, and vintage modified are typicly better than their fender equivalent and about 1/3rd the price. I think the "big names" in the guitar business have lost touch with their customer base.now it seems they make instruments that are more about brand recognition than customer satisfaction. Gibson is a great example.its all about how great the les paul was and how much it can do, and not about what we want from the les paul. God forbid you want something a little different, well aside from what they decide they want to bolt on top of it, i.e. the robot tuners disasters or the" sound like everyone elses guitars" system there putting in thr new ones. Meanwhile asking for more color options, a decent vibratto system, or even something like straplocks to come standard on high end models and you get a history lesson.

@TheGhostGuitars
@TheGhostGuitars 6 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately I don't have my first EVER guitar, a little Jasmine. But I do still have my first electric, a red Yammy Beach Banana, a SC300T. Hell, I still have all of my early electrics. In order of acquisition... 87 red Yamaha SC300T 93 blackJackson JR94 Concept Randy Rhoads V (Yes, was amazed when I found out what I actually bought for just 250$US which also included an authentic Jackson hard case, it was and is still in mint condition!) My first Strat type is an Austin AU731 Tobacco-Burst that was owned by a local Luthier, thus had a nice setup and is in mint condition. My first Les Paul is a mint 2014 Agile AL-3010 in the old Oceanburst (not the newer, and might I add, uglier "Oceanburst" they're offering lately) Austin AU766 Sunurst LP copy, that was owned by a local performing guitarist. Somewhat a beater but plays quite nicely. Bought to beat on while saving my mint AL3010 for special occasions. Black Yammy EG112 ST-type bought to beat on while saving my mint AU731. LTD AX50 in silver. My first metal guitar (aside the JRR94) which was quickly replaced but will be a project guitar for later. Black Peavey Predator Plus Strat copy that is my first Floyd Rose. Still needs work as it came with bad output jack and for some unknown durned reason he painted the black hardware white with what looks like white-outs (liquid correction fluid). An Epiphone Limited Edition Genesis DX Pro in Transparent Black. My first SG style, bought as a shop floor model, but still had most of the factory stickers and tags on it. Ibanez XH300 Halberd in dark gray. It's my replacement metal guitar while the ax50 is in pieces for restification.The XH300 is my first active pickups. And what I nicknamed my FrankenBass, someone else's project bass guitar. A red crate body with jazz bass style pickups mated to a Fender neck. It's my first bass electric. It's in such bad shape that I'm going to be redoing this guy all over. But in meantime I'm currently working on getting a black Schecter Deluxe-4 to play on. I have 3 other electric guitars that are basket case vintages that are in queue on the restify project list. All are 60s era small makes. A Swinga SG-type, a Western ST-type, and an Artisan hybrid ST/LP-type. Except for the Western (which just needs restringing), they were missing strings, nut, and all hardware. However the Swinga retained it's original metal pickguard. Except for the AU766, AX50, and the EG112 and the 3 vintage project guitars, the other guitars are all first for me in one way or another. First real guitar, first electric, first Strat, first LP, first SG, first Floyd, first active pickups, first metals, etc. Unless you want to count the two basket cases to be my first vintages, lol, which I bought together for just 15$US each!

My first guitar was an Elevation copy Strat I got almost 10 years ago on my birthday from Argos, it honestly means the world to me though. I did end up upgrading the electronics and also changed the pickguard to a HSH layout, Tonerider Alnico II humbuckers and a single coil. I also changed the neck to a 90's Squier Strat maple neck + rosewood fretboard. The guitar to me feels much more personal, especially after making my own modifications to it to make it play and sound a million times better

My very first ever guitar my parents got me an Antares acoustic. It was a Hummingbird knockoff: Black body and neck with a black pickguard that has a white bird perched in a rose vine. This was in the early 80s and we lived in Hawaii. The thing was always out of tune and the strings would rust within 2 weeks of installing them. Tropical humidity is not a freind to string instruments. But I played the hell outta that boxy until my fingers were actually bleeding. I had it for 2 years and traded it in at a pawn shop plus cash for an Aria Pro II RS Knight Warrior with a Kahler trem and HSS blade pickups. That guitar was Purple Burst and I was the envy of all my friends and the idol of all the girls. Ahhh... the 80s...... good times!

Great video guys! Two follow up ideas 1)The search for your LAST guitar. If you had no worries about budget what would be the one guitar you would get where you would say "Thats it, I have the last guitar I will ever want or need..." 2)What you're first guitar SHOULD have been. Thinking back to the point when you got the Ibanez and Fender....what guitar did you really want? Example: When I was 15 I wanted the black and white Fender standard. Basically, the Eric Clapton guitar. It was WAY to dear at the time, so I wound up getting a white squire. The funny thing is, years later, when I could afford the B&W Standard....it was not as great as my 15 year old self thought it was. Then again, is it fair to say a 2008 Standard is no where close to what a 1986 Standard would have been? Cheers

Wow, I'm stoked to see how much you enjoyed having it back in your hands, Rob. I was honestly more concerned about the shipping, and in what shape It would arrive! Glad to have been of help, sadly, I couldn't find anything for Lee... But if for whatever reason I come across one, I'll let you know! Also, my first guitar was a Superstrat copy with a small 10watt analog Kustom amp I inherited from my aunt from the mid 80s. Still keep It today, but stored away. It was terrible to play with! Floyd kept losing pressure and sent the action of the strings 4 metres from the fretboard...But... First guitar, sentimental value, etc. Then played an LP for the first time and fell in love, and never looked back. I will get It a proper set up sometime! Keep doing what you do guys, you are most amazing!!

BrianS Man one night I stopped at a record/cd store I worked at to drop something off and in the store was this old bald guy talking to my coworker behind the counter. When I walked in my coworker pointed to me and said “ He might buy it”. Anyway the guy says he has a les Paul for $200. In my mind I think oh damn it’s gonna be a cheap knock off that’s worthless, but at the same time I’m excited that it could be a great guitar for a steal. We walk outside and dude pulls a case out and it says epiphany and I think oh well I’ll at least look, but he opens it and it’s a beautiful brand new Ace Frehely cherry burst les Paul with lightning inlays and his face paint on the headstock and 3 humbuckers. For reference I had a nickelodeon boom box when I was 8 and only Kiss Alive on cd so I was excited to see this guitar. It played fantastic so I bought it. Got it home and plugged it into my old peavey butcher with 4x12 and it was the best sounding guitar I’d played up to that point. Incredible guitars.

Another great video guys. Always interesting when Chappers and the Captain get together just to chat guitars and reminisce. Taking up guitar today there are so many great choices available. When I began playing around 45 years ago you would be VERY lucky to find a budget guitar that stayed in tune for more than a few minutes. Build quality at the entry end of the market was absolutely awful. My first acoustic was a nylon string, classical/folk thing that was a bloody nightmare to play. You could have driven a truck under those strings! Today you would be hard pressed to find a bad guitar even amongst the cheapest of them. Great time to be a musician :)

Put's me in mind of an Encore bowl back acoustic I had back in the early 80's. It was a present from my mother and although it probably didn't cost a great deal and was not that great to play it meant a lot to me. My mother was an incredible woman, working three jobs, raising four young children on her own, my father had died when I was eight and my step father died when I was 14. She never had any money for herself so she probably took an extra job just to pay for that guitar. I learned all the basics on that Encore and I still had it up until a couple of years ago by which time it was completely unplayable. The gift of a guitar to a young person cannot be underestimated :)

I found a website that calculates the current value of amounts in the past, and it said that £200 in 1988 would be worth £535 today. However, given the increase in availability and quality of cheap guitars, £300 is probably a reasonable budget for a beginner guitar today, and you can definitely get a very decent guitar at that price.

I have one of these, with the ibanez own edge something something fr-style tremolo and in HSH. Its a very decent guitar, good bang for your buck when you're into shredding superstrat style. The stock PUs are nothing special, better than the infamous Ibanez stock PUs, but nothing special, changed them for classic set of JB / 59 SDs. The finishing is kinda thicc polyethylen though, so even with the finish of the wood being gourgeous, it looks kinda cheap in person compared to one of the more expansive Ibanez. The neck is wicked, though, kinda beefy for a RG tbh, but I really like that.
