Simply stated, entropy is the relationship between the temperature of a body and its heat content (more precisely, its kinetic heat energy). Entropy, S, is the heat content, Q, divided by the body's temperature, T. S = Q/T Stated another way, the heat, Q, stored in an object at temperature, T, is its entropy, S, multiplied by its temperature, T. Q = T x S That is it. The definition of entropy, as originally conceived in classical thermodynamics, had nothing to do with order or disorder. It had everything to do with how much heat energy was stored or trapped in a body at a given temperature. Think of it this way. If you removed all the heat energy possible from an object by cooling it down as far as possible (down to absolute zero), and then kept track of the heat you had to put back into it to bring it back to a given state, that amount of heat supplied divided by the final temperature in kelvin would be the entropy of that object in that state. The entropy of system is the average heat capacity of the system averaged over its absolute temperature.

Entropy in a general state has nothing to do with order or disorder, it is simply energy is more likely to move from a concentrated or dense state to a less dense state, unless prevented by some barrier. The microstates are equally probably the macrostates are not. The Carnot engine is a ratio of work to heat flow which always is less than 1
@ProfessorDaveExplains6 жыл бұрын
people always seem to gripe over the entropy/disorder thing, and i don't fully get it. of course to simply say entropy is disorder is an absurd oversimplification, but to me a dispersal of matter is necessarily disorganizing. atoms stacked up neatly in a lattice, vs. atoms flying around randomly in a gas, order vs. disorder. of course this notion of entropy is limited and doesn't apply to heat engines, so maybe it's a semantic issue. but i just don't see how using the word disorder is specifically incorrect. i just see it as the word we use to get people's feet wet with entropy. then after that they learn all this stuff in this clip. then later, even more.
@KimberlyRPeacock6 жыл бұрын
I just do not see it as disorder, but a greater possible configuration space unless prevented. It's like work and energy some use them interchangeably, and it does no harm as further along it will be better defined. Or the idea of chemical energy, mechanical energy, etc, when its really just kinetic and positional.
@KimberlyRPeacock6 жыл бұрын
Besides that one issue, you make great educational videos. You have a way of simplifying and communicating that I envy.
@ProfessorDaveExplains6 жыл бұрын

@KimberlyRPeacock6 жыл бұрын
I think what confuses people is the idea of micro-states and macro-states. People think of the greater number of possible configurations as being disorder. This really was not an issue in classical thermodynamics, but as you know developed with quantum mechanics, and somehow Shannons information theory entropy got merged with thermodynamic entropy, and they are indeed separate entities/functions. And the power of Carnot shows that you must reject heat at the same rate as input for the cyclic process, such that for all real world processes, an engine cycle must always have less work output to energy throughput. However we should not confuse the work with the energy flow. The energy flow is the heat flowing in and out of the engine, which gives rise to the expansion and contraction of the working fluid of the engine. What is confusing is we call it Carnot efficiency, when it is not about energy efficiency, it is a ratio about work output to energy flow, whereby work output will never be 1 in the real world, and be significantly less in most cases.

I would like to suggest a clarification regarding the Carnot cycle and the (mandatory) presence of the low temperature reservoir. The video is potentially confusing in this regard since the discussion digresses to the inefficiencies present in an internal combustion engine of an automobile. This aspect is really superfluous to the discussion. The Carnot engine itself is a fully reversible cycle. However, in order for the Carnot engine to operate - the presence of the low temperature sink is still mandatory. The presence of the low-temperature sink returns the working fluid of the Carnot cycle to its original state at the beginning of the cycle(state 1). Without this step the Carnot engine cannot sustain cyclic(continuous) operation. The key here is the term "cyclic operation." This detail is crucial to the discovery of entropy and the identification of entropy as a thermodynamic state property. The last item I will point out is that the change of entropy for a cycle is always 0 since it is a state property(just like internal energy). I thought you did a nice job on the description of the microstates. Hope this helps.

I disagree with the deck of cards shuffling for an increase in entropy. There is no change entropy. Each card is a distinct entity unique to its peers. In other words, no 2 cards are exactly alike. So, shuffling the deck would not change anything other than the order of the cards. I do concede that if we are strictly talking about the colors or symbols of the cards, then the shuffling would increase entropy. This is due to having multiple copies of indistinct entities in the system.
@ProfessorDaveExplains5 жыл бұрын
But there is information on the cards. When you purchase the deck it is organized by suit and number, so it is in a specific permutation. When you shuffle them, they can adopt any number of permutations. So there is a dispersal of information.

Hmm... it's possible I misspoke on the second statement, I don't fully recall but I think the Carnot engine may be a hypothetical engine with an efficiency that is unattainable in physical reality.
@carultch3 жыл бұрын
@@ProfessorDaveExplains The Carnot engine is an upper limit to the theoretical efficiency of an engine, for a given heat source temperature and a given heat sink temperature. In reverse, it can also be the upper limit for performance of a heat pump or refrigeration cycle, with a given temperature on both sides of the space to be heated or cooled. The Carnot engine is considered impractical, but not impossible. It is impractical to make all four processes of the Carnot engine work out perfectly with no frictional losses, and with infinitesimal temperature differences only. It is also impractical to make an engine work with the Carnot cycle processes, when other processes are more realistic to implement in practice. Which is why we use Rankine, Brayton, Otto, and Diesel cycles for actual heat engines.

An example of increased order, that even the cosmic death of the universe would find hard to dissipate - an iron atoms fused in stars will stay whole even at 0 Kelvin even when Universe has stretched so far that there isn't another atom of anything in its bubble of its event horizon. It will never break down to its lighter elements. There are examples where Entropy just ignores no matter how we like to rationalize it. Imo the statistical explanation of Entropy - ie describing it as tendency to disorder is so misleading (first of all it's subjective) and ignores plenty of exceptions, so that any scientists describing Entropy this way should be ashamed of him/her-self :)
