You cannot logically label all religions off the views of certain sects of Christianity. People are not nice because they constantly fear eternal damnation. Not even the members of those sects of Christianity that preach that. People are who they are. If you run into a bad Christian, Muslim, or Jew, trust me, it's not because they're religious. Atheism will NOT solve their problem. That's just how they are as a person. You speak of empathy but don't seem to have much for those that choose to be religious. They could have had any number of experiences in their life that made them the way they are today, and not all of those are related to the religion they practice. And chances are religion has helped them in more ways than not. Religion has been around for thousands of years. This is going to be hard for you to accept, but our current view of right vs wrong would be far different if religion never existed, and not in a good way. When people say "I don't need X to know how to be a good person" let me tell you, you only have that generalized understanding of right vs wrong BECAUSE of religion. Am I saying a religious person is better than a non-religious person? No. That is what the other side is doing, and I know right from wrong.
