I shopped at the very first Uniqlo in NJ at Menlo Park Mall. The quality back then was amazing. It's still good but the items I bought back then, compared to now are thicker and have lasted... and prices obviously were a lot better. Prices in Japan are 1/3rd of what they are in the US which hurts the wallet a bit but my main request is that Uniqlo bring back its old return in store for online shopping policy. Not every store carries all the collections and sizing isn't always accurate online. Paying $7.95 to return/exchange an item or having to drive/waste gas is really inconvenient. I'd shop far more if they brought back the old return in store policy for online shopping.

9:30 doesn't make sense about learning from failure. You mention the company simply "doubled down on its philosophy of high quality basics that never go out of style". So, this is not adapting to the US and UK markets, it's just reinforcing its own basic style without following the trends. Is this learning from failure? 🤔

Yeah, but if you just stop and think about that for even a few seconds that's actually pretty par for the course for any company in their specific position....!?! Y'know, given that the clothes are designed and manufactured in Japan....?! That little fact right there means that when they sell locally in Japan, they haven't had to pay out God alone knows how much money on the various massive overhead operational costs that they have to pay for - long before they ever sell so much as a single stitch - in order to sell internationally, they have to pay for hefty storage costs; then they have to pay through their noses for some pretty monumentally sized transportational costs: staff to sort the international apparel outta storage, get it ready for shipment, who knows how many lorries/HGV's - all with their own drivers - to transport the stock to whichever international port.., then it has to be checked onto a international transportation liner boat, under supervision, spend who knows how long en route, then all of the above process has to be done all over again in reverse once the stock finally reaches the port of Destination, including all of the associated massive costs of each of those particular steps, AND the cost of paying hefty amounts to insure all of the individual parties involved in the process AND the stock itself - while STILL having to also factor in a margin for potential losses/personnel mistakes/acts of nature etc that can and often do affect the ultimate delivery of the stock or not.... Honestly, the costs to the company who have to pay for everything above ☝️ when being factored into the overall pricing of the apparel for sale, it would easily dwarf the cost of manufacturing each individual garment, multiplied by a factor of who knows what - and that's just transportation overheads to sell internationally - I haven't even said a word about international tariffs and/or taxes, the difference in the availability and/or colossally high prices of renting retail shop front locations in places like London, compared to places in Japan etc (which also raises all of the location specific overheads too, like insurance; higher wages need to be paid to all workers, because it costs a certain amount of money below which it is literally impossible to live within commuting distance to the shop you work at within cities like that - you can't just pay people minimum wage; you have no choice but to pay them a LIVING WAGE which is commensurate with the cost profile of living within the same catchment area as the shop, unfavourable local taxes and corporate costs of levies, tariffs, local welfare programs etc of the shop country, which are most often quite harsh on large companies who are headquartered elsewhere in the world, etc, etc, etc - I could honestly write a whole essay here explaining this in detail to you...... Suffice to say that because the company doesn't have to carry/pay for any of the above massively financially punitive overheads - which all but eradicate the profit margins completely - when they sell in Japan, and can also manufacture to meet the most popular items in real time (rather than being forced to make a massive financial outlay payment upfront and long in advance of them finding out whether each item sells equally; which they never do btw...!?!; and take the entire financial hit on whatever the locals at the other end of the world don't respond to or buy at all - what's popular in one part of the world can quite often be the aesthetic nightmare of another part of the world) ALL OF WHICH seriously diminish the cost of Overheads to such an extent whereby I would honestly probably bet my very life on the fact that, even when you take into consideration the 30+% reduction in prices that favours Japanese Customers, I'd say that they're still making a much more sizeable profit margin on selling to the Japanese - even with that much reduced price - than the barely there profit margins they manage to scrape out of the higher cost price paid by the consumer/customer elsewhere in the world, even though it appears that international customers appear to be paying 150% of what their Japanese contemporaries are in Japan..... On the surface, it might appear to be unfair and unreasonable - but the second you actually think about it and the bigger picture in terms of the reasons behind it, suddenly you realize how much more reasonable, rational and self explanatory it is, considering the factors that are involved in the Total Cost of Manufacturing for Sale (including associated overheads) Vs End Stage In Shop Price for Sale Complete Equation that has to be considered - which drives the prices of consumer goods internally within a company. That's the equations which need to be considered and completed within the internal structure of any business to keep that business viable. There are many, many external factors which are far beyond the business' control which also drive both the cost of manufacturing and the cost of sale price which I haven't even gotten into either (and I won't!!) Eg:- Inflation; the Jobs Market (how many competitive jobs there are available at any given time; things like Strikes, Work to Rule Protests, etc, The Economic Viability of the Core Consumer Group, Etc, Etc...); Increases to international levies and tariffs, the Economical Well-being of the world - are we in a Prosperous state worldwide; or are we inching closer and closer to Recession, like what appears to be happening right now.... Anyway, that's me putting the phone down - just thought I'd explain the reasons behind the apparent disparity to you, so you realize that it's actually quite a normal thing you're witnessing/speaking of - and also it's not just purely because of corporate greed, but instead it's something which has to occur in order to cover both extra and massively increased overhead costs....!! Take care.
