Poland's Lech Kaczyński in August 2008 traveled to Tbilisi together with the presidents of Ukraine, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia to show solidarity with Georgia in the face of Russia's invasion of that country, according to accounts by officials. This is way more important for the world to know and fight for than Palestine. Not just for the Georgian people, but for the whole world to know how Putin is slowly trying to claw back all the countries that broke away from the USSR and how easy it is. Palestine on the other hand, whilst enduring unbelievable horrors and hardship is not having it's land taken away from them. My mom was translating what he was saying but he was so happy for us georgians (me and my mother) to eat there he even gave us a discount. The republic remained unrecognized, yet it detached itself from Georgia de facto. In the last years of the Soviet Union, ethnic tensions between Ossetians and Georgians in Georgia's former Autonomous Oblast of South Ossetia (abolished in 1990) and between Ossetians and the Ingush in North Ossetia evolved into violent clashes that left several hundred dead and wounded and created a large tide of refugees on both sides.

Why is that you say Georgia would be a theater for Russian actions in the next conflicts but you fail to even mention the overwhelming fact of the USA. The US has a long history of taking advantage of opportunities to further its global dominance by instigating internal conflicts in other countries. By providing substantial financial support to small protests, the US often turns them into massive movements, leading to societal division. This strategy ultimately results in the installation of pro-US governments, a pattern seen worldwide, including in Ukraine.

A few import things Johnny glances over: 1) Georgia was part of the USSR, but it wasn’t just a conquered subject as Georgians played a role shaping Soviet politics. One of the if not the most important Soviet leader - Josef Stalin - was a Georgian who actually spoke Russian as a second language. 2) The parts of Georgia Russia invaded were separatist regions which home to ethnic groups who didn’t like being part of a Georgian state. The Abkhaz are a Caucasian group while the Ossetians are actually an Iranian ethnic group that practices orthodox Christianity. Neither group wanted to be part of Georgia but were stuck in Georgia at the end of the USSR (the Ossetians were also separated from their fellow Ossetians living in North Ossetia which is a part of Russia). Something Putin has done well is convincing separatists groups that he will invade their territories to let them separate, whereas Putin’s attempt to invade an entire country has been less successful. 3) Many Western countries will criticize Russia invading Georgia to support separatists but simultaneously support other countries doing the same - like supporting Armenia’s claim to Azerbaijan’s territory which until recently Armenia occupied in a similar manner. While I support Georgia in opposing Russia, it’s important to understand the nuances of the situation. Johnny doesn’t seem to like nuances…

More on item 1 of your post: The Russo-Georgian alliance, however, backfired as Russia was unwilling to fulfill the terms of the treaty, proceeding to annex the troubled kingdom in 1801, and reducing it to the status of a Russian region
@skyrider11910
@skyrider11910 14 сағат бұрын
Lol, u yourself glanced over a lot of important things. And I mean A LOT. 1) First of all, Stalin considered himself a russian. For all the time he ruled during USSR, he didn't do ANYTHING good for georgian people. He even hated when other people were bringing up his ethnicity. Also, these autonomous regions in Georgia like Abkhazia or so called South Ossetia were created by...surprise-surprise: STALIN/bolsheviks. So Stalin is partially at fault that these wars broke out, because bolsheviks were trying to tie the republics like Georgia back to Moscow, so that Georgia and the other nations could not settle their conflict without Russia's influence. You mentioned Armenia/Azerbaijan war, but you didn't mention that this war ALSO broke out because of unneeded autonomy that was created by Soviet government. We can go even further and see that almost EVERY SINGLE WAR on a post-soviet territories can be tied back to Soviet action. 2) so called "abkhazians" (their real name is apsua) and ossetians are not the original inhabitants of so called Abkhazia (Abkhazeti) and so called "South Ossetia" (Tskhinvali). These are georgian territories and always were georgian, so I dunno what are trying to say with that. By that logic, if a russian immigrant is not happy in US, he shouldn't move back to Russia, but he should bring Russia to US. What the hell??? Same as if an indian doesn't like to live in Canada, he shouldn't go back to India, but bring India's army to Canada. You're nuts, dood. Also, why didn't u mention the fact that russia occupied Georgia's territories, and holds them under control TILL this very day. I don't see independent Abkhazia or Ossettia, I see a russian people living there, with a russian passports, with a russian ruble being the main currency and the russian language being the main language...do I have to continue? This list can go on and on. And you know why is that? Because these failed states can't exist without an external support. They never were and they never will. 3) Why mention US here, if in this specific video there was NOTHING mentioned about how US and the West is good compared to Russia? For God's sake, can all of you just stop pretending that you're against the imperialism, drop this facade and admit that you're just another coping West hater? This really starts to annoy a lot to be completely honest. Snap back to reality.

A week before, they evacuated their civilians and began firing at Georgian villages. The day Georgia responded, these 50,000 soldiers immediately started advancing, bombing the entire Georgian territory from the sea, from another occupied region, Abkhazia, and from the air. They killed many civilians simply because they were Georgian, and thousands of Georgians were forcibly displaced from their homes. Of course, Georgia “attacked” Russia on their so-called territory, which only Syria, North Korea, and a few “peace-loving” organizations like Hamas and Hezbollah recognize as independent. Do you know how long it takes to gather 50,000 soldiers at the border? No. Russia started preparations two months before their attack. I’m a little confused,if Georgians are hard fighting and are wishing to be free from Russia then why their government and parliament is so pro Russian. Hi There. Russia didn't like the pro-western course of Georgia's previous president, hence provoked the war in 2008, invested heavily in propaganda to demonize president Saakashvili, who made enemies when fighting corruption, crime etc and as result a party called "Georgian Dream" headed by an Oligarch Ivanishvili who became a billionaire in Russia in the 90ies rose to power. This party exposed Saakashvili Government for an inhumane treatment of prison inmates , some human rights violations that significantly tipped a scale in favor of "Georgian Dream" and they've managed to stay in power until now.

I understand your confusion and will try to provide some context as a Georgian. We need to consider this situation from two distinct perspectives: the ruling party and its government, and the majority of the people, particularly the younger generation. Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, many Georgian soldiers and volunteers have joined the Ukrainian army to fight against Russia. Tragically, we have lost many soldiers there. In addition, from the very start, numerous non-governmental organizations, activist groups, and individuals have organized humanitarian aid. After the disgraceful statements by Georgia's former prime minister, Irakli Garibashvili, there were large demonstrations in the capital to show support for the Ukrainian people. You might wonder why this party is still in power, given that statistics suggest it shouldn’t be. The answer lies in corrupt elections, state-controlled media, and widespread poverty. Outside the capital, the situation in rural areas is dire. The government's propaganda machine continuously emphasizes that if we pursue a European path, we’ll end up in a war with Russia like Ukraine. And the cherry on top? The opposition parties are a disaster. In about a month, on October 26, we have elections and we're hoping for the best.

Yes, it is a democracy. The next parliamentary election will take place on October 26th of this year. The problem is that the power is very centralised and concentrated on the executive (the president), so there is a risk of rigged or non-free elections. There is a great article by the Council of Europe titled "Free and legitimate elections essential to safeguard Georgia’s place in Europe’, says head of PACE pre-electoral delegation, ending visit" that explains really well the situation. You are referring to the Treaty of Georgievsk, under which Georgia became the protectorate of the Russian empire, which was supposed to guarantee its SOVEREIGNTY. When Georgia was invaded by neighboring Muslim powers, Russians took no action and later ANNEXED Georgia. So much for protecting the sovereignty of the country. Refer to Tucker Carlson's interview with Putin where he went on an hour-long rant about the history of Russia and Ukraine in order to question the very existence of Ukraine. The Treaty of Georgievsk was a tool Russia used to annex Georgia and even if it was not, frankly, we do not care.
