Perhaps of all my videos this otherwise non-eventful one captures the ONE simple thing that Master K has always tried to communicate about Muay Thai. It's called the Art of Eight Limbs, but the power does not come from the limbs. It comes out of the hips, pelvis and abdomen, and thus the standing leg. And you see that in this clip as he tries to get me to find that power across several different techniques, from strikes, to round-kicks, to knees, repeat knees and push kicks. I've studied with him for 2 years now and I'm still just beginning to harness this source of power.
Find Master K at www.masterkelbowko.com, in New Jersey, United States; or at (201)755-3212

When i first watched this video as a complete beginner, I was thinking yeah thats nice, interesting. Now that I've come back to it and grown in MT, I realize just how gifted he is and the depth of the knowledge he's trying to impart. I had no clue how much I didnt know. Beautiful video.

Relaxing is so hard to do in action. I know exactly what you mean - I laugh when my trainers tell me to relax because I usually end up getting hit in the face when I do and being hit isn't really, you know, relaxing. Breathing is the main thing, it's about using muscle tension FOR the strike and FOR the block. Like when you trip or miss a step and your body locks up for a second before you regain your balance - it's momentary, not walking around tense.

fuck man, why can't all trainers be like that ..hes constantly correcting you and explaining things ( hes showing that he cares and you're not just another "number or Body"....and you can clearly see that theres a relationship between you two...I also learned a few things from this vid---Ioved this video , thanks a million.

Each moment of contact should be a mini explosion so to speak. Drive your hips and head through the target. Letting your head fall back at impact takes away from the power at it's most crucial point, impact. Watch a few videos of Chi Sirasute. He is a master of getting perfect technique, speed and power across to students. Then again, he is the grandmaster of thai boxing. Your training looks good!

Awesome training. I like those old Asian masters. They really give the training an authentic feel. At a lot of big kickboxing/MMA gyms, it feels like I am training at a department store.

You are accurately describing my childhood white belt training experience (1970s) compared to today where I no longer teach just because of the authenticity of your latter experience which is exactly why I train in my own home now with not more than two students at a time. I was initially trained by the Asian masters and their students who focused on mastering the fundamentals meaning that yesterday's green belts are equal to if not superior to today's brown belts. I have literally witnessed this in today's belt holders who are more than likely overweight, poorly conditioned aerobically and inferior in form. Even boxing trainer's train their top students one at a time and this is not possible today because one wants to keep their studio open. However, this video shows you how to really be trained by a true master and all training should be held to such a high standard because the body needs to know how to more correctly when applying such force against another body. Great upload and comment.

Sylvie, Thanks for your great videos. My wife and I are doing Muay Thai here in Virginia Beach and Iv'e done it for 10 years I'm 55 and my wife is 45 and she's been doing it for 5 months(my daughter is 8 and she is doing both Jiu jitsu and Muay Thai). It took me a while to convince my wife to start. After 5 months of Muay Thai my wife wished she would have started when I did 10 years ago. We've just discovered your videos and my wife is very happy that she found you on a youtube search. After watching your videos you have given more reason for my wife to train. We want to thank you for that.

This seems like invaluable advice. Balance is an overlooked aspect in muay thai since you are required to stand on one foot often thrusting your hips. That's why I imagine yogis would do well in muay thai boxing if they were to have the stomach for it. You're awesome Sylvie, really. Great job.

Balance isn't really overlooked. In boxing, it's definitely one of the core fundamentals and that applies to any stand up art really. Shadow boxing on a tire is one such excercise that helps.

After years of muay thai it took me some time to realise that the path to improve power isn't simply through technique or strength training legs - but also really improving balance and flexibility (especially in the hips!) now i spend more time stretching my hip flexors before and after training. (espeically because i sit on my ass all day as a job) - that really screws my hips flexibility

I found this video very encouraging! I had been doing Muay thai for a year before I came here to train in Thailand (have been for 2 weeks so far with 2 weeks to go) and I thought I was somewhat good, at least for how long I had been training. But i discovered when I got here I was far off! My kicks just aren't right in technique, i struggle with the twisting off the hips! Its been 2 weeks and still im getting yelled at (TWIST YOUR HIPPPPS!). Some days i think f*ck this i'll never get it, but seeing videos like this, I think the beauty in Muay thai is its constant learning, your trainer is never going to be like 'perfect!' 'great!'. Compared to a normal citizen you'd appear as great, but to a thai trainer they'll always find something! I'll go to training in the morning with that in mind and just keep trying! Thanks for the videos, this isnt the only one i've found informative!

It's hard to relax, but it's so key. As you get more and more tired, there's no choice but to really implore your hips to do all the talking for you. Especially important for those really fast short blows he's showing you in close like the body hook. It's super tiring dragging that knee across your target in the kicks if you can't get that bottom foot up on the ball and heel rotated towards your target. Work that quick snap of the foot, extension of the hip to full! Looks good!

Nah, splits aren't something we mess around with for Muay Thai. For the hips you just have to keep doing the movements and gradually your stability, balance, flexibility and strength will work themselves out. Master K learned to kick over his head by trying to kick branches that were over his head and eventually got there. I do an exercise for my hip flexibility - search for the video "Hip Rotation and Flexibility - Lanna Muay". For hamstring/calf try to relax your leg as you swing it
