Love it. Should think about incorporating a portion of the rock wall into the pasture. Goats would love climbing on it and it might help reduce the need for frequent hoof trimming.
@brendasas84405 жыл бұрын
That is exactly what I was thinking. 👍
@tealkerberus7485 жыл бұрын
Or a few big individual rocks, so they don't have to be stacked to make a nice castle to climb on.
@kmeyer521725 жыл бұрын
The idea of doing a pile is that goats naturally like to climb and if you have a mound of them, they will spend a lot of time on them and all that activity on the rocks will help wear down their hooves. Will still need trims but for sure less often
@tealkerberus7485 жыл бұрын
kmeyer52172 goats will climb on anything that gives them a bit of elevation - a pile of rocks or a single large rock, or a tree stump or a heap of dirt or a picnic table or a car parked in their space. My car still has the scratches on bonnet and roof to prove that last one! But a single big rock, or the smaller ones concreted together to form one rock, is safer than a loose pile, because there's no risk of something slipping under a goat's hoof and causing them to trip. I had a goat with a broken leg once, we saved her but the vet bill was more than her replacement value by about four times. It's not something you want to have to deal with.
@kmeyer521725 жыл бұрын
@@tealkerberus748 Understood. Of course stacking solidly is the key. If you've seen his wall those stones are big and won't budge easily. A good stack and they should be solid. They can slip on any thing. Just jumping off those spools could possibly lead to a fracture if they land wrong. Stepping in a hole can do it, rough play. Having a large pile will allow more goats and be of interest to them. I mention the stones because of how it will help the hooves. Dirt pile won't do that. Solidifying the rock pile with concrete or back filling gaps with dirt certainly has merits if shifting rocks or slipping into a crevice is a concern.

A very good sign of progress with the new pasture for the goats. I had a smile about the way that they were slow to understand that it was now their plot. Then it was great to see you all enjoying the new freedom. I wonder what effect it will have on the goats with a greater access to a range of food stuffs. I hope they are not the greatest jumpers and climbers, I have seen some that would climb and eat everything. The place is really progressing well and you must all be pleased with the progress you are making to reach you planning goals. Well done to you all.

Oh man......what a great surprise!! Such a huge addition to the benefits of the entire family on the Homestead, including the animals. WOW......so beautifully done and thought out.....Al, Gina and Olivia, wonderful job. The Goats are loving it already. A GREAT HOMESTEAD is when the entire inhabitants are "HAPPY" and basically have a feel for the whole of the property. I am very impressed with the Scratching tower.....fantastic use of it, and YES the Goats will figure it all out. Now you have tons of room Al to set up here and there areas like the SPOOLS.....and different other things here and there....like the wooden portable bridge in the Original goat yard....that the Goats can use to play on. The babies all need those kinds of things to climb all over and frolic with each other.....good exercise for them and very entertaining to watch. I am looking FORWARD to this NEW ADVENTURE to grow and grow in so many ways that benefit all of you on the Homestead. GREAT JOB HomeSteaders!! LOVE IT!! Ken Orlando, Fl.

Very cool! You should put some protection around any trees that are inside the pasture--I think I saw one big one and a few smaller ones. The goats will start eating the bark which will kill the trees. Here the goats killed about 50 trees (pine, maple, birch) within around 1.5 years.

Great progress, Al! Have you thought about using some of those plentiful rocks to fill in low spots along the fence line? Seems you have plenty -- and they're cheap, too. Al, Gina, Really well done with the fence. Speaking as an expert farmer of three chickens I can say that you will notice a change in the mood of the herd now they are out. We have a secure back garden, but we kept the hens in their run for six weeks before letting them out so that they would fix on their roost. My chores are easier in the coop and they are gardening to happy hen sounds. I'm sure you'll get the same effect. The pasture will stimulate the goats. I've learned a lot from your animal husbandry and have a poultry fence to guide operations. We've decided to put the coop in the poly tunnel for winter on deep litter and make a small outside run with the fence. Our Winters are cold and wet. I'm now relaxed about how I care for the Laydees as I have watched you working and follow your example. So far everybody happy! Thanks, Regards Stephen.

Regarding the gaps under your fence, I usually bury a 4x4 or a fence post half deep horizontally to take up the gap. If it reaches the verticle posts I Lag them together, if not I drill holes and pound 1/2" rebar 3 ft down into the earth... Also, because my goats love to lay into the mesh and push against the fabric pulling out the staples at the posts, I wrap some scrap wire like a twist tie around the fabric and post. p.s. This explains the fence post driving sounds from an earlier video.... Road construction, yeah right.... The goats seem to enjoy the pasture. Mr. Lumnah, are you going to intensively graze the pasture by using temporary fences to form paddocks? At least during Spring/Summer/ Autumn? Also, is the fly larval cycle in goat manure the same as in cow manure? That's my backdoor way of asking if you'd have chickens following the goats should you decide to rotationally graze. LOL

Great job. I like the plan of high tensile for the rest of the pasture. We are moving in the opposite direction. We started with a high tensile perimeter and are now looking at a few places where hard fence will go in for weather events or to work on our animals without chasing them all over the place. We started Dexter cows this year. Smaller so not as intimidating and their beef is excellent. Very winter hardy as well.

Goats are like that. Cautious at first... Al when you did that side-step at the beginning I realised they were getting a pasture. That is exactly how they react to a change of space. I remember once I moved a rock from behind Meg's stall when I was hosing it down and I forgot to put it back. And Meg got to the door and stopped dead in her tracks and did that thing with her neck and then stepped softly and slowly in like she was about to turn and bolt at the slightest movement or sound. We got a clue last week when you said something aboaut hearing what sounded liek fence post being pounded. The new pasture is awesome. The goats are going to love it. A rock pile or maybe a slide or teeter-totter and palyhouse would add to the fun.

What a great surprise! Love seeing the look on their faces as they slowly went out to explore. They'll sure love all that new space.
