This is interesting. I have an old beat up Knight nickel tech putter I bought at a thrift store for $1 that I pure more than any other. Guess what....It has a dot!

Good tip Matt! I play a load of old putters, most of them have no alignment mark at all. A while back I used to find the sweet spot on a putter I was about to use by tapping the face and then make a quick mark with a felt tip pen and it was great. But for some reason I've stopped making that mark, I still find the sweet spot but rely in memory as to roughly where the sweet spot is.🤔 I'm going to start marking it again, why I might even drop a little spot of enamel paint there for a more permanent fix!

MSG you couldn't be more right on about this. When I started playing golf 18 years ago I used this cheap no name putter and it had a line all the way down. Then my 2nd putter was a belly putter. It didn't have a line all the way to the edge and I wasn't holing out putts as I did with El Cheapo putter. So I got a silver Sharpie and added the line. I putted better. Then I purchased a Ping Craz-e putter and I had to add a line on that one. And my current putter came with the alignment line & I love it. Great assessment and video, sir.

Great video.....I hack sawed a line on the top of my YES! Callie putter years ago and used a black sharpie to to fill in the cut.........always found it easier to hit the sweet spot!

This really works. The issue is the alignment aids on most putters assume your eyes are directly over the ball. Reality is few people do. If your eyes are back even an inch, then the alignment aids that don't go all the way to the face of the putter will then have you aiming on a different line.

Totally get it. Been in T22/Champion's choice NP2 for 4 years and 2008 Button back before that (basically same putter). I was so excited when they did it in the NP2+ (more forgiveness!) Bought it. Made more putts consistently with the blade.

If you watch some of the older Edel putting videos you’ll hear him talk about this, it’s the aiming point. I put a sharpie mark on the top edge of my putter and instantly began putting Better. This is an individual preference.

Matt, I have a SC Newport 2, and was part of a Facebook group. One of the members SWORE by this, and drilled a small hole on top of the putter face, then used special paint to fill it in. I would be too nervous to do that myself, but I would imagine you could find a local club maker to do this (professionally)? I had an old blade putter with a dot on the top of the face and LOVED that feature!

Great point. This came up in the putter fitting i did earlier in the year....ive always prefered a blade with a top line or dot like you show in the video , wasnt sure if it just suits my eye and style ...maybe its universal?

That actually explains a lot. I bought a $50 Ray Cook mallet putter that is absolute money. And it has the line on the top just like the one you drew. I now putt better than I ever have. MSG might have just busted the entire expensive putter industry!

I think that tiny dot or line also narrows your focus. Similar to players trying to hit a specific dimple. Aim small, miss small

My Evnroll ER2 putter has two dots on the top of the blade that I filled those in with white paint. It significantly improved my center strikes and helped me control my speed, and I began making more putts as well.

I had a similar issue with my Northwestern tour putter, indoors on the mat under perfect lighting my putting with it was great, but on the course it wasn't working with the old black line. I used my wife's white nail polish and did a repaint and haven't been over a 3 putt the rest of the season.

I bought a torque balanced hand made edel putter and it didn't have a center mark and I loved how the putter felt but I had issues with the alignment. To I marked the center, filed in a grove, mixed up some paint to match the baby blue that the rest of the putters design was painted with and filed the grove with the paint and it made such a huge difference bit was unreal. I did that a couple months ago and I've been averaging 1-3 three putts per round at max. I've had two round with zero three putts. It 100% works.

It’s all about feel. Feel is created from comfort. When you are comfortable, you play better. When something doesn’t fit, it won’t work. Tinkering is important but you have to know what you’re doing. I’m much like you in this regard. I gotta know and I’ll figure it out. It can get expensive though. Lol

So in order for the line on top to be on the sweet spot of the Scotty it has to be slight in within the line and heel. I sent mine to the shop and thought they did it wrong but realized the dot changes when you lie the putter down correctly to align with the ball

Very interesting. I have an older Odyssey Sabertooth that I like a lot. It has two dots on the top. I also hit an Odyssey Doublewide really well without markings on the blade. Humm...what if there were markings on the blade?

@mrshortgame I'm going to try this on my Ping Anser putter which has no alignment marks. What do you suggest? Making the mark in the geometric center from one end of the putter to the other end? This would assume consistent mass from end-to-end.

You should try the "Dot Putter"!! It is totally about alignment with a total of 8 dots...so if all 8 are aligned like a cross, you know your eyes are over the putterhead properly...you can see your line...and you just swing. Speed is all that remains...when you strike the sweet spot you get a really nice sound. Glad to send more info...was invented by a guy in Australia. Only $150!

I did with this my Ping. I found that if my toe is raised or if my head is not properly over the ball, then the 2 lines don't line up. One will be outside of the other. When the club is flat and head positioned correctly the 2 lines are lined up as 1.

I guessed the Top line Dot and I was correct. Colin Morikawa putts with a custom TP Hydroblast that has the centre line removed and has a circle dot added to the topline.

You made me look, i use a pxg blackjack and a odyssey stroke lab 3 for different green speeds, but i never noticed both have an alignment mark at the top of the face, i guess my brain told me thats what i needed without thinking about it!,

FYI...I found the same thing on my putting. But, what I did was go to an automotive store and bought white pin strip tape. It works great and if you don't like it just peel it off. It also comes in red and black.

I play a Wilson Staff 8802 and I found the true center of balance (closer to the heel from true center) drilled a hole and filled it with red laquer. Voila! My putting improved dramatically. Spoiler alert, after all that "original work" I looked online and somebody else discovered this long before I did...

If you line the top dot up with the lower line the putter is flat.. If the top dot is toward you the toe was up. If the top.is forward of the line the toe is down.. It makes it strike more consistently.

Make your first mark(s) temporary by using a pencil. That way, if you don’t like it, the mark comes off easily compared to a Sharpie or paint.
