Geoff doesn't like being put on a pedestal, but there is anyone who really deserves it, its him.

I'm 56 and saw Queensryche on this tour. I can confirm that it sounded EXACTLY like this. We were LISTENING for mistakes, sharp or flat notes ... dropping a fifth or octave in the melody..... NOPE. I'm convinced they weren't even tuned down as a band. .......It was awe inspiring.
@purplekat58643 ай бұрын
I agree! I've seen them live many times, and they truly are perfection! I'm not a musician, but I never caught any flat notes or wandering off a note, or any goof-ups. They really cared enough to practice hard and give outstanding performances! 💜

Tate was 25 here and the old man the band (the rest of the guys were about 21.). His voice was essentially bullet proof and the band had the confidence of youth. As cool as this was compare the lyrics to the songs they would write over the next three albums as they moved away from their hero worship of British metal and developed their own voice and style.

You should definetely listen to Queensrÿche - Killing Words - unplugged. The vocals are so fragile in this track. And just a crazy live performance.
@PlacidDragon2 ай бұрын
The interesting part to vocalist Geoff Tate, is that he had no vocal training. He had played in bands in his teens, but he was the keyboard player, not the vocalist. Once he started doing vocals, he noticed that while he could sing like he is here, he could only sing for about an hour before he started losing his voice. So he took a few classes with Maestro David Kyle (that was all he could afford, because Kyle was massively expensive), and that helped strengthen his voice so he could do full shows. This song, "Queen of the Reich", was written by Chris DeGarmo (the white guitar), before Tate joined the band, and is also the inspiration for the band name :)

Thank you! I'm tired of people parroting about Geoff's operatic training when it's not even true 😅 Those lessons and the fact that he played trumpet at school was all the training he had

Saw Geoff Tate a few months ago at a small venue in Massachusetts. He was absolutely incredible, still! I can honestly say he’s lost nothing with time (I also saw Queensryche open for Metallica in 87 or 88)

I also saw QR open for metallica lol, QR dominated that concert
@purplekat58643 ай бұрын
Geoff sang predominantly in his higher register during QR's first two albums (this song was from their EP, BEFORE their first album!) but really mixed the high and low ranges nicely in their third album, "Operation:Mindcrime,". A MUST HEAR MASTERPIECE in every respect! Please either do an album reaction (one long, complicated, intriguing story, told in flashback) OR just listen to it for yourself! It gets better and better the more you hear it. OK, that said, what you noticed in Geoff's cheek as being "ripped" ( he was in top physical condition), which is possible, but I think what you're seeing are his DIMPLES! He has adorable dimples, which are most noticable when he smiles ( wish I could send you some pictures). He's generally very intense on stage, and you might not see his dimples very readily, but they're very noticeable in interview clips, especially in the earlier days. 😁 And YES, his face is very expressive while he's singing because he is ALL IN, and fully engaged in using that instrument to achieve the sounds he wants, as you put it. Geoff's speaking voice has gotten lower and lower over the years. He's soft spoken offstage, and quite a bit lower than you heard him when speaking at the end of this performance. Lolli, I really enjoy everything about your instructions, expertise, humor, quirkiness, and general personality! And yes, please check up on Julia! Another favorite of mine. The two of you together are hysterical, and highly knowledgeable. Lethal combo! More original lineup Queensryche please! "Operation: Mindcrime" album, and for something dreamy (at least at the beginning) "Real World" by QR. See you soon! ☺️

Mother! Are you kidding me!?!?! A live song from their very beginning? Respect. Next is the visit of Queensrÿche's apex. The concept album: Operation Mindcrime where lyrics are pure gold (Spreading the Disease, The Mission). Enjoy! 🙂

I saw this tour at The Bayou in DC. Small club that held about 500. You had to be 18 to get in because they served alcohol. My older brother was a bouncer there and snuck me in. I was 14 and planted myself right up front. I could have touched them I was so close. Too bad there's animosity between Geoff and the boys. I would love to see the Operation Mindcrime tour again.
@davidsirmons2 ай бұрын
Queen of the Reich is their 1st song on their self-titled demo release. The songs on that release, their next called The Warning, and then Rage for Order and Operation:Mindcrime were the highlights of Geoff's godlike presence. If you like concept albums, Geoff's searing vocal sorcery and their style of composition, give it a listen.

You MUST DO “Roads to Madness”, and listen to the “Rage for Order” and “Operation: Mindcrime” albums in their entirety. He does such amazing things with his voice, and the band totally rocks, too. They progressed SO MUCH, from album to album as a band in such a short time, in terms of style, composition, melody, and production, etc. from just heavy metal/hard rock, like here, to full-on mind-blowing Progressive Metal that was so unique and revolutionary for the time, and maybe even up to this day. Geoff was a superstar then and almost no one could touch him. Props must be given to Chris De Garmo, who sang amazing harmonies (as you see here, too), and was one of the primary composers and song-writers.

Hopefully you'll get round to Tony Harnell from TNT, with the song "Seven Seas"- in F#! I remember bringing the cassette with me to a party in the summer of '84 when all the Metalheads were raving about Geoff Tate, (and rightly so)! I said "wait til you hear this guy, he's better than Geoff Tate". Everyone: "NO WAAAY, IMPOSSIBLE"! Then I put on "Seven Seas", which features Tony hitting F#5's.
@maskmedusa2 ай бұрын
I've been posting all over the place about Tony Harnell and TNT for a long time now. NO ONE will react to them. No idea why. Because they weren't "popular"? His voice was also astounding, but I feel Queensrÿche were better songwriters overall and changed their style much more often, in the beginning at least. "Seven Seas" isn't a great song, but he does hit some high notes. I prefer something from Tell No Tales; or Intuition.
